A Landscape Design of Mixed Use Development Project by Project Financing in Baebang, Asan (아산배방 복합단지개발 PF사업 조경설계)

  • This landscape design proposal was presented for a competition for mixed-use development project by project financing in Asan Baebang which was held by the Korea National Housing Corporation in July of 2005. The site is a center of Asan Baebang New Town Development District and has a commercial area of $57,929m^{2}$. Design guidelines and judging criteria of this competition were to build a symbolic center and cultural core for district, to elevate positive image and identity of Asan New Town by attractive place making, to link with separated block in the site and regional context, and to make environmentally sustainable design by creating an attractive waterfront of Jang Jae stream passing through the site. This is the most important condition for the design. Therefore, the authors developed design concept and strategy within the guidelines and this conditions. The schema of the design was introduced by the water in the site. To evolve design concept, we reinterpreted water and context in the site combining with landscape design strategy. So the proposal set the main design concept as 'all that is solid melt into water' as if Marshall Berman said. By doing that, design concept of the proposal evolved as follows: 'extension' of water and greer, 'a joint' of space,'newness' of experience, 'breath' of consensus with each other. The spatial concept of this project was developed by expressing five theme spaces; eco zone, entertainment zone, art zone, culture zone, leisure zone. These theme spaces were consecutively placed along the pedestrian path and to consists of vertical layer in each level and diverse design technique and spatial effects are used.

Aesthetic Concept of Play and Architecture of Alvar Aalto (미학적 놀이 개념과 알바 알토의 건축)

  • The purpose of this research is to rethink Alvar Aalto's architecture on the basis of the aesthetic concept of play. This attempt is valid because he had asserted the importance of play in his design. But more fundamentally, his critical view of the instrumentalised rationalism implied the idea that a human being is "Man the Player" as well as "Man the Thinker", of which theory was elaborated in Johan Huizinga's Homo Ludens (1938). Premised on it, this paper investigated the evolution of the play idea in aesthetics and located Aalto's concept within the map. Summing up, his play was an intuitively grasped desire opposed to a rational requirement, which leads to a dialectical synthesis. This schema is similar to that of Schiller, in which Spiel reconciles the reason and the sense. However, Aalto's play could be differentiated into the "astonishingly rational" and "a jest", each of which roughly corresponds to the Spieltrieb (play impulse) and the sinnliche Trieb (sensuous impulse) in Schiller's thinking. On the other hand, Aalto's architecture illustrates play that could be interpreted as the overflow of surplus energy. This play is the very concept that can bridge the gap in the form-function formula of modern architecture. Aalto's play idea seemed to basically originate from his personality but its value must be confirmed by the Finnish litterateur Yrjo Hirn as Aalto mentioned in his statements (1953 & 1972). It appears that Aalto's play concept was materialised in architecture through his typical design language, such as the undulating wall, the aperspective space, the imitation of nature and the collage of heterogenous elements. However, we should be careful not to reductively analyse the application of play in practise. As Huizinga's comprehensive theory suggests, the play element exists in any cultural areas including any architectural activities. In conclusion, this paper argues that Alvar Aalto the Homo Ludens presented the possibility of critical rationalism in modern architecture by imbuing dry modernism with "the life enhancing charm" of "the art of play".

A Landscape Design of Eunpyeong New Town District 2, Seoul (서울 은평 뉴타운 2지구 조경설계)

  • The Seoul Housing Corporation pronounced a design competition for Eunpyeng New Town District 2 in March of 2005. The authors collaborated on this design and won rot prize. Design guidelines of this competition were to make environmentally sustainable design, to develop as a resort site and cultural place for everyday life of residents, to link with green fabric of the district, and to elevate positive image and identity of Eunpyeng New Town district by creating a attractive landscape. The authors developed design concept and strategy within the guidelines and site conditions. The environmental setting of this site was characterized by mountain to the rear of the site with a stream passing through the district and the front of the site. This is the most important condition for the location principle of residence in Fung Shui theory. Therefore, the schema of the design was introduced by Fung Shui and Chi of place. To evolve design concept, we reinterpret the Fung Shui and Chi in the site combining with modem landscape design strategy, so that good place making could bring about well-being life of residents. By doing that, design concept of the proposal evolved as follows: 'fullness of comfortable life', 'adaptation of nature', 'inspiration of natural force'. This design approach is critical reevaluation of regional characters employing modem strategy. It is a conscious strategy of critical regionalism as distinguished from the traditional site oriented approach. The following are some of the major features in the design: green network and water recycle system in the site, promenade of forest with the experience nature, link to community core, theme gardens with plants having strong fragrances, terrace gardens with different level of housing type, playgrounds and resting places with many types, human scale facilities for residents.

The Semantic Structure and Grammaticalization of the French Preposition de (프랑스어 전치사 de의 의미 구조와 문법화)

  • This study is about the French preposition de. This preposition is considered to have no meaning in the French language, and to have only the grammatical function in its use. This study begins with doubts about such views regarding this preposition. We organize and classify general descriptions of the uses of this preposition. The uses are classified as 'expressing starting point,' 'giving characteristics' and 'performing grammatical functions' and this data is analyzed in terms of the associated cognitive grammar. In the case of expressing the starting point, it is assumed that the trajector moves from the starting point, to the destination point, in the domain of space and in the domain of time. Therefore, it is noted in this case that the preposition de has a dynamic concept. On the other hand, it is significant to understand that the preposition of the 'giving characteristics' defines an outline of a particular class by giving the class's characteristics. The preposition de has a static concept in this case. For the preposition de which introduces the infinitive, all of these dynamic and static concepts are faded and extremely grammaticalized.

A Study on Media Coverage and Recognition Type of Users about Ubiquitous Environment (유비쿼터스 환경에 대한 언론보도와 수용자의 인식유형에 관한 연구)

  • This study conducted both a content analysis and Q-methods analysis in order to find media coverage and recognition type of users about ubiquitous environment in digital online age. The perception type of this study were divided into four types in all through Q-methodology. Above all, this study investigated three research problems. First, how is the type of the perception divided into the subjectivity by recognition-characteristic on ubiquitous environment in Korea? Second, what is a trait of character in these same or different types? Third, how did news media cover ubiquitous phenomena overall? Fourth, is there any difference between media coverage and audiences' perception about ubiquitous phenomena? The results show that audiences seem to generally follow the frames that mass media provide. In addition, however, the audiences tend to recognize ubiquitous environment based upon their own schema as following four types: 1. Positive Universality Leading Type, 2. Uncertain Prudence Preference Type, 3. Future Cultural Enjoyment Type, 4. Negative Effect View Type. This study suggests that every efforts such as technology and policies that can improve the quality of ubiquitous environment in Korea should be accompanied.

A Study on Brand Identity of TV Programs in the Digital Culture - Focusing on the comparative research of current issue programs, and development - (디지털 문화에서 TV 방송의 브랜드 아이덴티티 연구 -시사 교양 프로그램의 사례비교 및 개발을 중심으로-)

  • The emergence of new communication media, digital, is something of a wonder, as well as a cultural tension. The industrial technologies that dramatically expand human abilities are being developed much faster than the speed of adaptation by humans. Without an exception, it creates new contents and form of the culture by shaking the very foundation of the notion about human beings. Korean broadcasting environment has stepped into the era of multi-media, multi-channel as the digital technology separated the media into network, cable, satellite and internet. In this digital culture, broadcasting, as a medium of information delivering and communication, has bigger influence than ever. Such changes in broadcasting environment turned the TV viewers into new consumers who participate and play the main role in active communication by choosing and using the media. This study is trying to systemize the question about the core identity of broadcasting through brand as the consumers stand in the center of broadcasting with the power to select channel. The story schema theory can be applied as a cognitive psychological tool to approach the active consumers in order to explain the cognitive processes that are related to information processing. It is a design with stories, which comes up as a case of a brand's story telling. The range of this study covers the current issue and educational programs in network TV during the period of May and August of year 2005. The cases of Korean and foreign programs were compared by the station each program is broadcasted. This study concludes that it is important to take the channel identity into the consideration in the brand strategy of each program. Especially, the leading programs of a station must not be treated as a separate program that has nothing to do with the station's identity. They must be treated to include the contents and form that builds the identity of the channel. Also, this study reconfirmed that building a brand of the anchor person can play as an important factor in the identity of the program's brand.

The Trend of Regional Geography in Germany in the 1920s and 1930s ($1920{\sim}1930$년대(年代) 독일(獨逸) 지지학(地誌學)의 연구(硏究) 동향(動向))

  • The regional geography had been at the height of prosperity in the first half of the twentieth century since Alexander von Humboldt and Carl Ritter. The geography remained stationary in the late 19th century had greatly developed around the regional geography in European countries since the early 20th century. Particularly, A. Hettner and O. $Schl{\ddot{u}}ter$ in Germany, Vidal de la Blache in France and A. J. Herbertson in Britain developed their own methods of regional studies and produced many results of empirical studies ; accordingly the regional geography had been at the height of prosperity in the 1920s and 1930s. This paper aims to study the regional concepts and the methods of regional studies of Germany geographers in the 1920s and 1930s. This study is useful to understand the current methods of classifications of regions and descripitive systems of regions. The noteworthy results of studies are summarized as follows : First, The regional geography of Germany had been developed by Hettner who regarded the geography as the chorological science of the earth's surface, $Schl{\ddot{u}}ter$ who did the geography as the study of cultural landscape and Penck's students, the morphologists of landscape (Landschaftsmorphologie). Hettner defined the geography as the chorological science, maintained that the earth's surface was classify according to its localized difference -continents, lands, districts and localities(Erdteile, $L{\ddot{a}}nder$, Landschaften und Ortlichkeiten) and emphasized on the total character of areas. He tried to classify downward from continents to localities based on the sizes of regions. He also gave the logic of causal relation to schematic approach(Das $L{\ddot{a}}nderkundliche$ Schema) and further developed it. $Schl{\ddot{u}}ter$ argued that The process of change on the landscape through time must be studied. And Passarge and Penck's pupils, morphologists of landscape, tried to classify the landscape synthetically. Thereafter, De Geer and $Gran{\ddot{o}}$ employed the creative methods of regional classification which used signs and simbols. Second, The regional geography of Germany differed from that of France on the next points ; 1. The former was analytic, but the latter was synthetic. 2. The former placed great emphasis on physical elements, terrain and climate etc., but the latter did great emphasis on both physical and human elements. 3. The former gave priority to the studies of large scale regions, but the latter did priority to the studies of small scale regions. In 1920s and 1930s the regional study of Germany geographers exerted direct influence on the development of geography of Japan. Especially, Tanaka Keiji, Japanese typical regional geographer, tried to classify Japan synthetically on the bases of terrain, climate, vegetation and human elements under the influence of European geographers. He exerted great influence on both Japanese and Korean geographers at that time.
