The yield performance and nutrient quality of barley for pellets making from whole crop material were discussed during 1993-1994. Barley (cv. Olbori) was grown on paddy land after rice cutivation and was harvested at early stage of physiological maturity. A column type of whole crop pellets was produced by 1.5cm diameter and 2.5cm height. Barley war evaluated as a suitable materials for whole crop pellet making. Barley produced higher yield and better qualitative roughage in the utilization of pellet making than in the silage making. Dry matter yields were obtained 12.02 MTha in pellet making and 11.70 MT/ha in silage making. Net energy value of barley pellet were 6.54 MJ in net energy lactation and 635 SV in starch equivalent net energy. Feeding of barley pellet improved milk production of daily cattle Daily milk yields per head were 25.1 liter in silage feeding and 25.9 liter in pellet feeding. Production cost of pellets and silages made from whole crop barley were 169.07 won/kg and 124.15 won/kg dry matter, respectively.

This study was carried out to determine the effect of various fertilizer levels, sowing time and planting density on the growth and yield of Scuteliaria baicalensis GEORGE cultivated after the barley in the southern coastal areas of Korea under the non- mulching condition by direct sowing culture. The flowering date of medium dressing plot(N : P$_2$O$\sub$5/ : K$_2$O=9 : 13.5 : 9kg/10a) and heavy dression plot(N : P$_2$O$\sub$5/, : K$_2$O=12 :18 : 12kg/10a) were July 23. The flowering date of the medium and the heavy dressing plot was delayed by 3days compared with that of non-fertilizing plot. The growth characteristics such as stem length, diameter of main stem, number of branch per plant, main root length, main root length, main root thickness and dry weight of stem leaves were more increased at medium dressing plot than that of other fertilizer levels, The root dry weight of in Scutellaria baicalensis GEORGE cultivated after barley was hlghest at the fertilizing plot of N : P$_2$O$\sub$5/ : K$_2$O=9 : 13.5 : 9kg/10a. The dried-root yield was 178kg in medium dressing plot, 167kg in standard dressing pot, and 126kg in non-dressing plot, The dried-root yield of medium dressing plot was 7% and 41 cie higher than that of standard dressing pot and non-dressing control plot, respectively. Emergence and flowering dates in the sowing time of June 1 were earlier than those of the other sowing times. In the sowing time of June 1, length and diameter of main stem, number of node per main stem, number of branch per plant and dry weight of stem leaves were greater than those of sowing times of June 10 and June 20. Yield components such as main stem length and diameter, main stem numbers, branches per plant, dry weight of stem leaves, main root length and thickness, number of large root and fine root per plant, and dry weight of root were the highest at the sewing time of June 1 as the yield of 71.3kg/10a. Optimum sowing time of Scuteilaria baicaiensis GEORGE cultivated after barley was June 1 in southern areas of Korea. Stem length was long in dense planting of 20${\times}$10cm and short in spacious planting of 30${\times}$10cm and 40${\times}$10cm by direct sowing cultivated after barley. Stem diameter was thick in spacious planting of 30${\times}$10cm and 40${\times}$10cm and was thin in dense planting of 20${\times}$10cm by direct sowing cultivated after barley. Length and dry weight of root per plant were decreased in dense planting of 20${\times}$10cm and were increased in spacious planting of 30${\times}$10cm and 40${\times}$10cm by direct sowing cultivated after barley. Yield of dry root was highest in optimum planting density(30${\times}$10cm 33 plants/㎡) by direct sowing cultivated after barley. The correlation coefficient between number of planting plant and stem length showed highly positive correlation. These characters of stem diameter, number of branches, main root length and yield of dry root mentioned above showed negative correlations with planting plants.

Recently, the Q biotype of tobacco whitefly has been recognized as the most hazardous strain of Bemisia tabaci worldwide, because of its increased resistance to some insecticide groups. As an alternative control agent, we selected an Isaria javanica isolate as a candidate for the development of a mycopesticide against the Q biotype of sweet potato whitefly. To select optimal mass production media for solid-state fermentation, we compared the production yield and virulence of conidia between 2 substrates (barley and brown rice), and we also compared the effects of various additives on conidia production and virulence. Barley was a better substrate for conidia production, producing $3.43{\times}10^{10}$ conidia/g, compared with $3.05{\times}10^{10}$ conidia/g for brown rice. The addition of 2% $CaCO_3+2%$$CaSO_4$ to barley significantly increased conidia production. Addition of yeast extract, casein, or gluten also improved conidia production on barley. Gluten addition (3% and 1.32%) to brown rice improved conidia production by 14 and 6 times, respectively, relative to brown rice without additives. Conidia cultivated on barley produced a mortality rate of 62% in the sweet potato whitefly after 4-day treatment, compared with 53% for conidia cultivated on brown rice. The amendment of solid substrate cultivation with additives changed the virulence of the conidia produced; the median lethal time ($LT_{50}$) was shorter for conidia produced on barley and brown rice with added yeast extract (1.32% and 3%, respectively), $KNO_3$ (0.6% and 1%), or gluten (1.32% and 3%) compared with conidia produced on substrates without additives.
This study was carried out to investigate the effects of seeding dates on the yield and feed value of whole-crop barley cultivated in paddy soil. The field experiment was conceived as a randomized block design performed in triplicate with seeding dates of Oct. 19 (T1 as treatment 1), Oct. 26 (T2 as treatment 2), Nov. 2 (T3 as treatment 3), Nov. 9 (T4 as treatment 4), and Nov. 16 (T5 as treatment 5) as treatments. The barley grown in all treatments was harvested on May 21 of the following year. Plant length, fresh yield, dry matter yield, and total digestible nutrient (TDN) yield were higher (p < 0.05) in barley with early seeding dates, whereas crude protein and ether extract were higher (p < 0.05) with late seeding dates. Crude fiber and neutral detergent fiber were highest in the T3 treatment and lowest in the T1 treatment. There was no significant difference between acid detergent fiber and TDN among the different seeding dates. Total mineral contents were higher in the order T1 > T2 > T3 > T4 > T5 (p < 0.05), whereas the total amino acid content increased significantly (p < 0.05) with a delay in seeding date. Free sugar contents (fructose, glucose, and sucrose) were higher with early seeding dates (p < 0.05). Collectively, the results obtained in this study indicate that it is favorable to seed soon after harvesting rice to increase dry matter and TDN yields and mineral and free sugar contents of whole-crop barley in the midlands of Korea.
Fermented barley food was produced by the combining action of an enzyme and a lactobacillus. When Lactobacillus sp. L-5 and commercial liquefying amylase from Tae Pyeong Yang Chemical Co. were selected, inoculated on steamed barley and cultivated at 37$^{\circ}C$ for 48hrs, the fermented product of good quality was obtained. In batch cultivation using rotary drum fermentor, viable cell count reached 1.1$\times$10CFU/g after 12hrs' cultivation, and specific growth rate in logarithmic phase was 0.6hr-1. Viable cell count, acidity, pH, concentration of reducing sugar and viscosity of the 48hrs' fermentation product from rotary drum fermentor was 4.3$\times$108CFU/g, 1.17%, 3.1, 10.7% and 1430cp.

Purpose: This study was conducted to discriminate between normal hulled barley and Fusarium (Fusarium asiaticum and Fusarium graminearum) infected hulled barley by using the near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) technique. Methods: Fusarium asiaticum and Fusarium graminearum were artificially inoculated in hulled barley and the reflectance spectrum of the barley spike was obtained by using a near-infrared spectral sensor with wavelength band in the range 1,175-2,170 nm. After obtaining the spectrum of the specimen, the hulled barley was cultivated in a greenhouse and visually inspected for infections. Results: From a partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) prediction model developed from the raw spectrum data of the hulled barley, the discrimination accuracy for the normal and infected hulled barley was 99.82% (563/564) and 100% (672/672), respectively. Conclusions: NIRS is effective as a quick and nondestructive method to detect whether hulled barley has been infected with Fusarium. Further, it expected that NIRS will be able to detect Fusarium infections in other grains as well.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of tillage methods such as plowing and rotary tillage (PRT), rotary tillage (RTG), no-tillage after barley straw application (NTB), and barley straw mulching after plowing and rotary tillage (BPR) on the growth and the yield of soybean when cultivated after the cultivation of barley. The methods were compared with the control method in which plowing and rotary tillage after barley straw incineration was applied. Barley straw application resulted in increase in organic matter, total nitrogen, phosphate, and exchangeable cation regardless of tillage methods. Porosity and moisture level in paddy soil was ranked as follows : PRT > RTG > BPR > control > NTB. Decomposition rate of barley straw dramatically increased to 41.7% toward 30 days after soybean sowing, higher in NTB, DRB, and RTG than in BPR. Weed occurrence was decreased 36% in NTB and 40% in BPR. Root activity, nodulation and the dry weight per plant of soybean at flowering stage were highest in NTB and lowest in PRT. Soybean yield in NTB was 3,070 kg/ha increasing 19%, whereas that in PRT was not increased. Therefore in case of a frequent rain during the cultivation of soybean in paddy field PRT could result in excess moisture level in soil, the cultivation without tillage is desirable.
This study was carried out to determine the effect of sowing time on the flowering, growth and yield of Scutellaria baicalensis Georg, which was collected from Yeochon district, cultivated after barley in the southern coastal areas of Korea. Yield components such as main stem length and diameter, main stem numbers, branches per plant, dry weight of stem leaves, main root length and thickness, number of large root and fine root per plant, and dry weight of root were the highest at the sowing time of June I as the yield of 71.3kg/10a. Optimum sowing time of Scutellaria baicalensis Georg cultivated after barley was June 1 in southern areas of korea.
