As various wheat variety for bread, all-purpose, and cake flour have been developed, suitable cultivation method for the end-use of the new variety need to be revised. This study was conducted to suggest an optimal nitrogen(N) fertilizer method for wheat Variety 'Saekeumgang' and 'Hojoong' with good noodle quality. In order to analyze the yield and quality changes of 'Saekeumgang' and 'Hojoong' as nitrogen fertilizer amount and timing, these varieties were sown on paddy soil in jeunju, Republic of Korea. The amount of N fertilizer was divided into 4 levels (7.1, 9.1 11.1,13.1kg/10a). In each levels, N amount in sowing date fixed as 3.6kg/10a, N amount in 10 days after heading(DAH) were treated 0 or 2kg/10a, and the other N amount was treated in regrowing stage. As N amount in regrowing stage increased, culm length of 'Saekkeumgang' was increased, but culm length of 'Hojoong' was not affected. Spike number/m2 was increased when N fertilizer amount in regrowing stage increased as 3.5 to 7.5kg/10a. But, spike number/m2 wasn't increased compared N amount 7.1kg/10a conditions when N fertilizer amount 9.1kg/10a. When the N fertilization amount in regrowing stage was increased by 1kg/10a, grain yield increased by 45.7 kg/10a in 'Saegeumgang' and 21.4kg/10a in 'Hojoong', so the fertilizer effect of 'Saegeumgang' was higher, when N fertilizer amount was increased to 2kg/10a at 10DAH, 1000-grain weight increased, but spike number/m2 and grain yield were not affected by N fertilizer at 10 DAH. Protein content and SDS-sedimentation value were increased as increasing N fertilizer amount in regrowing stage and 10 DAH. Among them, N fertilizer amount in 10 DAH had higher impact on protein content and SDS-sedimentation value. As N fertilize in 10 DAH, hardness of noodle was increased and chewiness of noodle was decreased
To identify the new source of breeding materials for rice salt tolerance, the salinity tolerance of thirty-four varieties was evaluated under 0.5% saline condition at seedling stage. The salinity score showed highly significant correlations to dry weight and dead leaf ratio. The tested varieties were classified into three groups by visual score, reduction ratio of dry weight, and dead leaf ratio. Eighteen varieties were classified as the highly tolerant group (salinity scores of 1.3-3.7), seven varieties were fallen into the tolerant group (salinity scores of 4.2-5.8), and others were susceptible (salinity scores of 6.7-9.0). In highly tolerant group, most indica varieties including Getu, Dikwee and Kuatic Putic, didn't exsert a panicle under the Korean climate. But six varieties, Xiangcho V, Annapuruna, HP 3319-2wx-6-3-1, Giza 175, and GZ 2447-S-17, GZ 4255-6-3 were suitable to the Korean climate, and their heading date (6-16, August) and culm length (65-78㎝) were similar to the Korean varieties. Accordingly, these varieties can be utilized as crossing materials for the salt tolerance in japonica rice.
A field experiment was conducted to investigate the influence of water weevil damage on growth and grain guality in rice. Plant height was shortened, number of tillers per hill decreased and maximum tillering stage delayed in damaged field by rice water weevil. Heading date was delayed by 1-2days, culm lenght shortened, panicle lengthened, number of panicles decreaced, number of panicles per spikelet increased, ripened grain ratio decreased in damaged field by rice water weevil. Yield per 10a was decreased 4-22% in damaged field compared with that in undamaged field by rice water weevil, yield loss in late transplanting (June 23) was larger than that in early transplanting (May 20). Imperfect kerml rice, especially green kernel rice, was increased in damaged field by rice water weevil.

A doubled-haploid (DH) population was developed through anther culture of F$_1$ plants obtained from a cross between a japonica cultivar, 'Nagdongbyeo', as male parent and a indica cultivar, 'Samgangbyeo', as female parent. Segregation modes for plant length, culm length, panicle length, third internode length, and days to heading in the DH lines showed nearly normal distribution with wide range of variation. A molecular map with 136 simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers was constructed using the DH population. The total map distance was 1,909 cM and the average interval of marker distance was 14 cM.

In 1985 and 1986, silage productivity of 8 Korean improved and 7 US introduced corn hybrids and their resistance to rice black-streaked dwarf virus (RBSDV) were tested in the southern part of Korea where RBSDV is prevalent. The results obtained are summarized as followes: 1. Percentage of RBSDV diseased plantes differed depending on the year and hybrid. Suweon 19, Kwangok, Hoengseungok, Jecheonok, Pioneer 3424, Pioneer 3H001, NC6 13 1 were most susceptible, Pioneer 3 160 and Pioneer 3358 were moderately susceptible, and Nampyungok, Suweon 90, Pioneer XCF38, PB 2, and Jinjuok were least suceptible. No hybrid was completely resistant to RBSDV. 2. There were negative correlations between percentage of RBSDV diseased plants and culm length, percentage of ear bearing plants, ear yield, silage yield, or digestible dry matter, but percentage of RBSDV diseased plants was not correlated with stover yield. 3. Silage yield of Jinjuok, Pioneer 3160, Pioneer 3358, and Pioneer XCF38 were higher than that of other hybrids in both years. However, digestible dry matter of Nampyungok, Suweon 89, and Suweon 90 were higher than that of other hybrids due to a higher proportion of ear in 1986 when RBSDV infection was severer.
Root and shoot development of two rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivars with different genetic backgrounds was studied with reference to their relative growth. Tongil type (indica-japonica hybrid) cultivar 'Kuemkangbyeo' and japonica cultivar 'Koshihikari' were grown in $5000^{-1}$ a Wagnar pots under flooded condition. Three plants with roots of both cultivars were taken in every phyllochron through the heading stage to record morphological characteristics of shoot and root system. Compared to Koshihikari, Kuemkangbyeo produced more tillers and had greater shoot weight and leaf area per hill. Length and weight of the root system in both cultivars increased exponentially with time. At the same time, root system development was significantly faster in Kuemkangbyeo than in Koshihikari after the panicle initiation stage. As a result, Kuemkangbyeo has a vigorous root system which consists of larger number of nodal roots compared to Koshihikari. Also, the root length and weight per unit leaf area of Kuemkangbyeo were larger than those of Koshihikari in the later half of growing period, which suggests possible higher physiological activity of the root system of Kuemkangbyeo which is known as a high-yielding cultivar. The relationship between root traits (crown root number, total root length, and root dry weight) and shoot traits (leaf area and leaf+culm dry weight) in both cultivars closely showed allometry until the flag leaf stage.
This experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of shattered grain by combine harvesting at the previous year on rice plant emergence at different planting methods and plant characteristics, The results are follows : Combine harvesting greatly influence on shattered grain of Samgangbyeo as Tongil variety (49.5kg/10a) compared to that of Nagdongbyeo as Japonica variety(27.8kg/10a), while Nagdong-byeo showed higher germination rate than Samgangbyeo, whether transplanted and direct seeded. Emergence of volunteer and seed mixture were lower in transplanted than in direct seeded. In variety test. Japonica variety showed higher emergence of volunteer rice and seed mixture than Tongil variety. Generally, no significant difference in yield components were observed with different varieties by the volunteer rice. But the volunteer rice caused by combine harvesting decreased culm length, panicle length, spikelet number, panicle number and ripening ratio. except l000-grain weights.
Lowland and upland rice were grown under the both of lowland and upland conditions. Ecological variations in plant characteristics such as plant height, leaf emergence, length of leaf blade, leaf angle, leaf width, heading date, culm length, panicle length and straw weight were observed. Plant height, leaf emergence and heading were accelerated under the lowland condition for both lowland and upland varieties, while leaf length, leaf angle, leaf breadth, number of leaves were increased in upland condition for both lowland and upland varieties.
A new species, Fimbristylis drizae J. Kim & M. Kim, is named and described from Sucheong Lake, Jeongeup-si, Jeollabuk-do, Korea. Fimbristylis drizae shares several characters (five-angled culm, 1-2 bladeless sheath, and compound anthela inflorescence) with the related species F. diphylloides Makino. It is, however, distinct from F. diphylloides, which has two to three stigmas, ovate spikelets, two stamens, a blackish brown scale, and a roadside habitat. In contrast, the new species has two stigmas, oval spikelets, one (or rarely two) stamens, a yellowish brown scale, and a lakeside habitat.
To investigate the critical seeding date for Daeyeupdlkkae in the middle area of Korea, we seeded from 30 April to 20 July with 20-day intervals on the experimental field in Chungbuk-Do agricultural research and extension service. As seeding date was delayed, days to emergence were shortened, flowering and maturing date were delayed, but maturing period was not significantly affected by seeding date. Delayed seed date resulted in decreased stem length, culm diameter, number of branches per plant and number of nodes on the main stem. Cluster length and 1,000 grain weight increased but number of cluster per plant and number of seed capsules per cluster decreased with delayed seeding. Seeding date up to 10 June showed no effected on grain yield, but 30 June and 20 July decreased 10% and 38%, respectively.
