An ad endorser's gaze direction is a salient nonverbal cue that consumers use in responding to advertisements. The gaze direction influences consumers' social perceptions (e.g., attractiveness, credibility) of the endorser and advertising effectiveness (e.g., advertising attitudes, brand attitudes). Especially, the cerebral emotional asymmetry hypothesis suggests that an ad endorser's left-averted gaze can produce more positive social perceptions and advertising effectiveness than the right-averted gaze for right-handed consumers. This study examined the effects of three gaze directions (direct, left-averted and right-averted gaze directions) of unknown female ad endorser on Korean males' advertising responses (attractiveness-, credibility- and ad-effectiveness-related responses), using online experimental method. The results indicated that the ad endorser's direct gaze was more likely to increase both positive (correspondence bias) and negative (suspicion, deceptiveness) social perceptions of her than the right-averted gaze. The direct gaze also created more positive advertising effectiveness (advertising attitudes) than the right-averted gaze. However, the study failed to find consistent differences in responses between left-averted gaze and either direct or right-averted gaze.
Circadian timing system plays a major role in a wide range of reproductive function. However it is plausible idea that other environmental and/or internal cue might be simultaneously participated in the optimal regulation of reproductive system. In the present study we extended the reverse feeding (RF) time regimen up to 8 weeks, then measured the general and reproductive indices of the animals. The animals of ad libitum feeding group (Control, CON) have free access to food for 4, 6 and 8 weeks, respectively. The day feeding animals (reverse feeding, RF group) have restricted access to food during daytime (09:00-18:00) for 4, 6 and 8 weeks, respectively. When the feeding schedules were over, key indices were measured. After 4 weeks and 8 weeks of feeding, body weights of animals were not significantly different. However, body weights of 6 weeks RF animals were significantly smaller than those of control animals (CON : RF = $333.46{\pm}12.71$ g : $289.91{\pm}8.31$ g, p<0.01). The blood glucose levels of 4 weeks RF animals were significantly decreased compared to the levels of control animals (CON : RF = $161.4{\pm}2.7$ mg/dL : $176.7{\pm}5$ mg/dL, p<0.01) while the levels of 6 weeks RF and 8 weeks RF animals were not different form those of control animals. Reproductive and non-reproductive tissue weights from 6 weeks RF group were significantly lowered than those from CON group (testis, CON : RF = $1.4714{\pm}0.0174$ g : $1.3724{\pm}0.0168$ g, p<0.001; epididymis, CON : RF = $0.3574{\pm}0.0059$ g : $0.3243{\pm}0.0068$ g, p<0.001; seminal vesicle, CON : RF = $0.1655{\pm}0.0068$ g : $0.1328{\pm}0.0054$ g, p<0.001; prostate, CON : RF = $0.3350{\pm}0.0231$ g : $0.2528{\pm}0.0143$ g, p<0.01). After 4 weeks and 8 weeks of reverse feeding, sperm counts in RF animals were markedly reduced than those in control animals[CON 4W : RF 4W = $121.17{\pm}9.96\;({\times}10^6)$ : $50.86{\pm}9\;({\times}10^6)$, p<0.001; CON 8W : RF 8W= $138.69{\pm}9.8\;({\times}10^6)$ : $108.94{\pm}4.22\;({\times}10^6)$, p<0.001]. Present study indicates that RF may induce an adaptable metabolic stress and cause impairment of androgen-dependent reproductive tissues. On-going longitudinal studies will allow a better understanding of the how does mealtime shift affect the reproductive function and exact nature of adaptation.
In order to take cue of the dying persons and their survivors in a more positive and affirmative atti-tube. and to understand the valuable meaning of and dying. a survey was performed to 550 cases of health care personnels including 116 nursing students. 238 medical students. 137 nurses. and 59 doctors. Samplings were made through census Procedure from the entire group of medical and nursing students in College of Medicine. Chung-Ang University. and of licenced nurses and doctors in Chung-Ang University Hospital. and in Han-Gang Sacred Heart Hospital from the first to the end of march. 1980. These collected data were computerized at KIST by SPSS programming and were statistically analyzed by chi-square test. Through content analysis of the word associated with death and descriptive analysis of the death-re-lated variables. the following conclusion in is reached. First. Total numbers of death-word percieved by health care personnels were 198 kinds. Among them, 40 kinds of words associated with death were responded from than 1% of the total. As to the 10 death related word responded by free word association method. it was revealed that individual average number of death related word was 7.70 word. which came from higher number of words in the senior students (8.96 word) or the graduates (8.10 word) compared with the freshman (6.84 word). Second. In Content specific analysis of the death related word. more frequently perceived types summarized as the following order; the affective context of death. the diseases. the disasters. the religion, the funeral ceremonies. the separation, the drakness. and the life. By occupation. the vanity and the dead was frequently observed in student group including senior students. while the incurable dieases presented by doctors. Fourth. In health care personnels. the first perceived ages of death were 11.47 $\pm$3.33 years (8.14- 15.80 years). Among them. senior students were inclined to percept death at the earliest age of life (11.28years). while doctors and nurses perceived death later in their life (12.98 years). Fifth, It is revealed in this survey that the most frequently responded death perceiving motives by health care personnels ar“psychological conflict”and“death of those around them”. Death perceiving motives can be classified in two factors; personality and life circumstances. Sixth It is of interest that only 11.3% health care personnels was found to feel death as inevitable or acceptable event. whereas 58.3% deny or reject it.
Abstract Perspective views provide a powerful depth cue and thus aid the interpretation of complicated images. The main drawback of current perspective volume rendering is the long execution time. In this paper, we present an efficient perspective volume rendering algorithm based on coherency between rays. Two sets of templates are built for the rays cast from horizontal and vertical scanlines in the intermediate image which is parallel to one of volume faces. Each sample along a ray is calculated by interpolating neighboring voxels with the pre-computed weights in the templates. We also solve the problem of uneven sampling rate due to perspective ray divergence by building more templates for the regions far away from a viewpoint. Since our algorithm operates in object-order, it can avoid redundant access to each voxel and exploit spatial data coherency by using run-length encoded volume. Experimental results show that the use of templates and the object-order processing with run-length encoded volume provide speedups, compared to the other approaches. Additionally, the image quality of our algorithm improves by solving uneven sampling rate due to perspective ray di vergence.
This study set out investigate what kind of changes would be caused to the craving of alcohol dependent patients by stimuli through virtual reality in the preparation stage for drinking refusal training. With regard to stimulation, it included alcohol exposure, a positive situation, and a negative situation on the basis of drinking encouraging situations(social pressure) known as drinking stimulating situations for alcoholics. The purpose of the study is to provide fundamental materials for the development of new training programs to refuse alcohol and for the examination of the possibility of utilizing virtual reality technology as a new treatment and training tool for alcoholics. To this end, a virtual reality program was conducted involving 12 alcoholics admitted to Severance Mental Health Hospital in Gyeonggi province from December 2006 to September 2007. The data was dealt with various statistic analyses such as frequency analysis, Wilcoxon Matched-pairs Signed-Ranks Test using SPSS/WIN 11.5 The analysis results indicate that avatars encouraging drinking caused more craving than just the background, that the scenes with alcohol exposed caused more craving than the scenes with no alcohol exposed, and that there were no significant changes to craving according to a positive or negative situation. The results confirmed that training sessions using virtual reality presented a situation and environment of drinking pressure that's similar to the actual social pressure and that the virtual reality approach had enormous potential as an effective treatment tool when combined with the existing treatment techniques.
This study examined several kinematic properties of the primary articulator (the tongue dorsum) and the supplementary articulator (the jaw) in the articulation of the voiceless velar stop (/k/) within nonassimilating contexts. We examined in particular the spatiotemporal properties (constriction duration and constriction maxima) from the constriction onset to the constriction offset by analyzing a velar (/k/) followed by the coronal fricative (/s/), the coronal stop (/t/), and the labial (/p/) in across-word boundary conditions (/k#s/, /k#t/, and /k#p/). Along with these measurements, we investigated intergestural temporal coordination between C1 and C2 and the jaw articulator in relation to its coordination with the articulation of consonant sequences. The articulatory movement data was collected by means of electromagnetic midsagittal articulometry (EMMA). Four native speakers of Seoul Korean participated in the laboratory experiment. The results showed several characteristics. First, a velar (/k/) in C1 was not categorically reduced. Constriction duration and constriction degree of the velar (/k/) were similar within nonassimilating contexts (/k#s/=/k#t/=/k#p/). This might mean that spatiotemporal attributes during constriction duration were stable and consistent across different contexts, which might be subsequently associated with the nontarget status of the velar in place assimilation. Second, the gestural overlap could be represented as the order of /k#s/ (less) < /k#p/ (intermediate) < /k#t/ (more) as we measured the onset-to-onset lag (a longer lag indicated shorter gestural overlap.). This indicates a gestural overlap within nonassimilating contexts may not be constrained by any of the several constraints including the perceptual recoverability constraint (e.g., more overlap in Front-to-Back sequences compared to the reverse order (Back-to-Front) since perceptual cues in C1 can be recovered anytime during C2 articulation), the low-level speech motor constraint (e.g., more overlap in lingual-nonlingual sequences as compared to the lingual-lingual sequences), or phonological contexts effects (e.g., similarity in gestural overlap within nonassimilating contexts). As one possible account for more overlap in /k#t/ sequences as compared to /k#p/, we suspect speakers' knowledge may be receptive to extreme encroachment on C1 by the gestural overlap of the coronal in C2 since it does not obscure the perceptual cue of C1 as much as the labial in C2. Third, actual jaw position during C2 was higher in coronals (/s/, /t/) than in the labial (/p/). However, within the coronals, there was no manner-dependent jaw height difference in C2 (/s/=/t/). Vertical jaw position of C1 and C2 was seen as inter-dependent as higher jaw position in C1 was closely associated with C2. Lastly, a greater gap in jaw height was associated with longer intergestural timing (e.g., less overlap), but was confined to the cluster type (/kp/) with the lingual-nonlingual sequence. This study showed that Korean jaw articulation was independent from coordinating primary articulators in gestural overlap in some cluster types (/k#s/, /k#t/) while not in others (e.g., /k#p/). Overall, the results coherently indicate the velar stop (/k/) in C1 was robust in articulation, which may have subsequently contributed to the nontarget status of the velar (/k/) in place assimilation processes.
In this paper, we propose a contextual information and physics-based contents manipulation method for a mobile augmented reality authoring system. Due to proliferation of ubiquitous computing in information technology(IT) and advances in sensor technology and mobile devices, AR systems that were only possible in PC can be now feasible on mobile devices. In addition, many AR systems have been proposed that utilize sensory data and reflect them into. Thus, the proposed method provides appropriate visual cues for 3D manipulations of the augmented contents. In addition, uses can manipulate the augmented contents with sensory information through the assignment of sensors to the contents. Moreover, it supports not only a physics-based contents loader that enables users to specify physics properties into the contents, but also the transform matrix between AR and physics engine coordinates. To show the feasibility of the proposed method, we implemented a mobile augmented reality authoring system. We believe that the proposed method can be a key factor for context-aware mobile AR authoring system.
Modeling from images is a cost-effective means of obtaining 3D geometric models. These models can be effectively constructed from classical Structure from Motion algorithm. However, it's too difficult to reconstruct whole scenes using SFM method since general sites contain a very complex shapes and brilliant colours. To overcome this difficulty, the current paper proposes a new reconstruction method based on a moving Planar mirror. We devise the mirror posture instead of scene itself as a cue for reconstructing the geometry That implies that the geometric cues are inserted into the scene by compulsion. With this method, we can obtain the geometric details regardless of the scene complexity. For this purpose, we first capture image sequences through the moving mirror containing the interested scene, and then calibrate the camera through the mirror's posture. Since the calibration results are still inaccurate due to the detection error, the camera pose is revised using frame-correspondence of the comer points that are easily obtained using the initial camera posture. Finally, 3D information is computed from a set of calibrated image sequences. We validate our approach with a set of experiments on some complex objects.
Two experiments were performed to test whether the perception of subjective contours occurs not only through bottom-up processes but also throught top-down processes by manipilating such cognitive factors as superimposition cues and selective attention.In the first experiment,the phenomenon of neon color spreading effect was used to investigate the effect of superimpoed Kanizsa triangles.To identify the effect of superimposition, two different colors were used,one for each overlapped Kanizsa triangle,and the subjects were asked which neon-like color they saw for the overlapped portion.Result indicates that the only neon-like color of the superimposing triangle can be perceived,which implies that super impostition cues may act upon the formation process of subjective contour as a a sort of top-down information.In the second experiment,two partially ovwelapped Kanizsa squares of which direction of superimposition were ambiguous and thus reversable depending on the observer's mental set were used to inverstigate the effect of selective attention.Subjects were instructed to pay attention only to one of the squares and report the neon- like color of the overlapped portion of them.Result shows that the subjects perceive only the neon-like color of superimposing square,which implies that such cognitive factors as selective attention may strongly influence the formation of subjective contours. In conclusion,the results of this study show that the subective contour does not depend only on bottom-up processes but also on such cognitive factors as super-imposition cues and selective attention.
Previous studies on the effect of incidental semantic priming on judgment, have focused mainly on mutually exclusive hypotheses. However, the present study explored whether incidental semantic activation affects diagnostic inference depending on the type of the hypothesis: mutually exclusive hypotheses vs compatible hypotheses. In Experiment 1, in case of mutually exclusive hypotheses, the final hypothesis was selected according to the incidental semantic priming, but there was no difference in the number of generated hypothesis in comparison with the control. However, for compatible hypotheses (i.e., both hypotheses can be true), the semantic priming affected the number of generated hypotheses, but not the selection of the final hypothesis. The same pattern of results was observed even when the cognitive load was increased. In Experiment 2, we found a boundary condition of incidental semantic activation on diagnostic inference. When cues related to each of the hypotheses were presented simultaneously, the incidental semantic effect disappeared. These results suggest that people consider all possible cues when making diagnostic inference in daily life. In light of these findings, further research on hypothesis generation/evaluation should take the type of hypothesis into account.
