High Strength Nanostructured Metastable Alloys

  • Nanostructured high strength metastable Al-, Mg- and Ti-based alloys containing different amorphous, quasicrystalline and nanocrystalline phases are synthesized by non-equilibrium processing techniques. Such alloys can be prepared by quenching from the melt or by powder metallurgy techniques. This paper focuses on one hand on mechanically alloyed and ball milled powders containing different volume fractions of amorphous or nano-(quasi)crystalline phases, consolidated bulk specimens and, on the other hand. on cast specimens containing different constituent phases with different length-scale. As one example. $Mg_{55}Y_{15}Cu_{30}$- based metallic glass matrix composites are produced by mechanical alloying of elemental powder mixtures containing up to 30 vol.% $Y_2O_3$ particles. The comparison with the particle-free metallic glass reveals that the nanosized second phase oxide particles do not significantly affect the glass-forming ability upon mechanical alloying despite some limited particle dissolution. A supercooled liquid region with an extension of about 50 K can be maintained in the presence of the oxides. The distinct viscosity decrease in the supercooled liquid regime allows to consolidate the powders into bulk samples by uniaxial hot pressing. The $Y_2O_3$ additions increase the mechanical strength of the composites compared to the $Mg_{55}Y_{15}Cu_{30}$ metallic glass. The second example deals with Al-Mn-Ce and Al-Cu-Fe composites with quasicrystalline particles as reinforcements, which are prepared by quenching from the melt and by powder metallurgy. $Al_{98-x}Mn_xCe_2$ (x =5,6,7) melt-spun ribbons containing a major quasicrystalline phase coexisting with an Al-matrix on a nanometer scale are pulverized by ball milling. The powders are consolidated by hot extrusion. Grain growth during consolidation causes the formation of a micrometer-scale microstructure. Mechanical alloying of $Al_{63}Cu_{25}Fe_{12}$ leads to single-phase quasicrystalline powders. which are blended with different volume fractions of pure Al-powder and hot extruded forming $Al_{100-x}$$(Al_{0.63}Cu_{0.25}Fe_{0.12})_x$ (x = 40,50,60,80) micrometer-scale composites. Compression test data reveal a high yield strength of ${\sigma}_y{\geq}$700 MPa and a ductility of ${\varepsilon}_{pl}{\geq}$5% for than the Al-Mn-Ce bulk samples. The strength level of the Al-Cu-Fe alloys is ${\sigma}_y{\leq}$550 MPa significantly lower. By the addition of different amounts of aluminum, the mechanical properties can be tuned to a wide range. Finally, a bulk metallic glass-forming Ti-Cu-Ni-Sn alloy with in situ formed composite microstructure prepared by both centrifugal and injection casting presents more than 6% plastic strain under compressive stress at room temperature. The in situ formed composite contains dendritic hcp Ti solid solution precipitates and a few $Ti_3Sn,\;{\beta}$-(Cu, Sn) grains dispersed in a glassy matrix. The composite micro- structure can avoid the development of the highly localized shear bands typical for the room temperature defor-mation of monolithic glasses. Instead, widely developed shear bands with evident protuberance are observed. resulting in significant yielding and homogeneous plastic deformation over the entire sample.

Effect of Alloying Elements on the Thermal Creep of Zirconium Alloys

  • The effect of alloying elements on the creep resistance of Zr alloys was investigated using thermal creep tests that were performed as a part of advanced fuel cladding development. The creep tests were conducted at 40$0^{\circ}C$ and 150 MPa for 240 hr. A statistical model was derived from the relationship between the steady-state creep rate and the content of individual alloying elements. The creep strengthening effect decreased in the following sequence : Nb, Sn, Mn, Cr, Mo, Fe and Cu. The high creep resistance of Sn and the opposite effect of Fe on zirconium alloys seem to be associated with their lowering and enhancing, respectively, the self-diffusivity of the zirconium matrix.

Practical Application of Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu Lead Free Solder in Electronic Production

  • At present, Electronic industries push ahead to eliminate the Pb(Lead) -a hazardous material-from all products. Especially, we have performed to select the optimum standard composition of lead free alloy for the application to products for about 3 years from 2000. These days, we have the chance for applying to the mass-production. This project constructed the system for applying the lead free solders on consumer electronic products, which is one of the major products of the LG Electronics. To select the lead free solders with corresponding to the product features, we have passed through the test and applied with Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu alloy system to our products, and for the application to the high melting temperature composition, we secured the thermal resistance of the many parts and substrate and optimized the processing conditions. We have operated the temperature cycling test and the high temperature storage test under the standards to confirm the reliability of the products. On these samples, we considered the consequence of our decision by the operating test. For the long life time of the product, we have operated the temperature cycling test at $-45^{\circ}C\;-\;+125^{\circ}C$, 1 cycle/hour, 1000 cycles. Also we have tested the tin whisker growth about lead free plating on lead finish. We have analyzed with the SEM, EDS and any other equipment for confirming the failure mode at the joint and the tin whisker growth on lead free finish.

Cu-Zn 금속합금의 산화 환원반응과 Al-Silicate의 흡착반응을 이용한 폐수 중 중금속처리에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Treatment of Heavy Metal in Wastewater by Redox Reaction of Cu-Zn Metal Alloy and Adsorption reaction of Al-Silicate)

  • 본 연구는 구리 아연 금속합금의 산화 환원 반응과 합성 알루미늄 실리케이트의 흡착 반응을 이용한 폐수 중 중금속 처리에 관한 연구이다. 극세사 형태로 제조된 구리 아연 금속합금이 수용액 중에서 산화 환원반응에 의해 아연보다 이온화 경향이 작은 중금속은 환원 처리되고, 이온화 된 아연 및 미반응 중금속은 흡착 처리하여 제거하는 연구이다. 극세사 형태로 제조된 금속합금 물질은 표면적이 커서 1회 처리만으로도 반응 평형에 도달하게 하여 효율이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 크롬($Cr^{+3}$)은 redox 반응 1회 처리만으로도 100.0 % 제거 되었으며, 수은은 98.0 %, 주석 92.0 %, 구리는 91.4 % 정도 제거되었다. 카드뮴, 니켈, 납도 각각 40.0 %, 50.0 %, 58.0 %가 제거 되었다. 크롬($Cr^{+3}$)은 아연과 이온화 경향 차이가 거의 없지만 제거 효율이 높은 것으로 나타났는데 이는 3가 크롬은 이온 상태로 존재하면 redox 반응에서 발생한 $OH^-$ 이온과 결합하여 수산화물 침전을 형성하는 것으로 판단된다. Redox 반응 후 증가한 아연 및 미반응 중금속 농도를 알루미늄실리케이트를 1회 통과하여 거의 100.0 % 제거할 수 있었다. 이는 합성 알루미늄 실리케이트의 비표면적이 크고 금속 이온의 흡착능력이 우수한 것으로 나타났으며, 반응 후 알루미늄 이온은 증가하지 않는 것으로 보아 이온 교환이 아닌 흡착으로 아연 및 중금속 이온들을 제거할 수 있는 것으로 나타났다.

보물 제1141호 한천사 출토 금동자물쇠 보존처리 (Conservation of gilt bronze locks (Treasure No. 1141) excavated from Hancheonsa temple)

  • Gilt bronze locks(Treasure No. 1141) excavated from Hancheonsa temple are artifacts of Goryeo Dynasty. The locks underwent a conservation process from October 2001 to July 2002. The process included cleaning and the application of corrosion inhibitors, Benzotriazolesolution, as well as reinforcement treatment with Paraloid NAD-10 solution,an acrylic resin. Non-destructive XRF analysis unveil that the artifacts are made of an alloy of copper(Cu), tin(Sn) and lead(Pb), but the gilt layer is too thin to analyze the purity of the gold or the exact production method. Gilt bronze locks are important materials because they preserve all the structures of locks in Goryeo Dynasty to the smallest detail. The surface pattern is revealed through the conservation process and components of the alloy through material analysis.

하남시 춘궁동 출토 청동현향로(靑銅懸香爐)의 제작기술과 보존처리 (Conservation of a Bronze Incense Burner from Chungung-dong, Hanam)

  • 청동현향로(靑銅懸香爐)는 1971년 경기도 하남시 춘궁동에서 발견된 고려시대의 향로이다. 유물의 표면에는 점토가 두껍게 고착되어 있으며, 부식으로 인해 청동병과 다수의 균열이 존재하고 일부분이 결손되어 취약한 상태였다. 청동현향로의 안정한 보존과 전시를 위해 표면에 고착된 이물질을 제거하고 취약한 재질을 강화하였고, 균열부위와 결손부위는 직조유리섬유로 보강하고 에폭시 수지로 복원하였다. 제작기술을 규명하기 위해 성분 분석과 미세조직을 관찰하였다. 성분분석 결과, 몸체, 귀, 고리, 뚜껑, 꼭지부위는 주성분이 Cu-Sn-Pb인 3원계 청동합금으로 주조하였고, 몸체와 귀는 구리의 함량이 높은 구리못으로 고정하였음을 확인하였다. 미세조직은 α상이 대부분이며 Cu와 S이 주성분인 비금속개재물이 존재한다.

치과용 아말감의 산화환원에 관한 전기화학적 연구 (AN ELECTROCHEMICAL STUDY ON THE OXIDATION' AND REDUCTION OF DENTAL AMALGAM)

  • The purpose of this study was to observe corrosion characteristics of six dental amalgams and was to analyse corrosion products electrochemically. After each amalgam alloy and Hg was triturated as the direction of the manufacturer by using mechanical amalgamator, the triturated mass was inserted into the cylinderical metal mold ($12{\times}10mm$) and was condensed with 160kg/$cm^2$ by using the hydrolic press. The specimen was removed from the mold and was stored at room temperature for 1 week, and was polished with amalgam polishing kit. The anodic and cathodic polarization curve was obtained by using cyclic voltammetric method with 3-electrode potentiostat in saline for each amalgam and Ag, Sn, Cu plate specimen at $37{\pm}0.5^{\circ}C$. The potential sweep range was -1.7V~0. 4V(vs SCE) in working electrode and scan rate was 50mV/s and the exposed surface area of each specimen to the electrolytic solution was $0.79cm^2$. The results were as follows. 1. In anodic-cathodic polarization curve of amalgam specimens, two anodic current rising areas and two cathodic current peaks were obtained at the low Cu amalgam(CF, CS) specimen and three anodic current rising areas and three cathodic current peaks were obtained at the high Cu amalgam (TY, DS, HV) specimen. 2. As this compared with the anodic and cathodic current peak potentials of Sn, Cu and Ag specimen, the first cathodic current peak I c was caused by the reduction of divalent tin salt, second cathodic current peak IIIc results from the reduction of quadravalent tin salt, and third cathodic current peak me results from the reduction of copper salt. 3. As reverse potential sweeping was done repeatedly, anodic current was decreased slightly in all amalgam specimens.

현대금속공예용 동합금판의 재료분석과 형질변환 실험 및 응용에 관한 연구 (A Study of material analysis and its experimentation of metamorphosis and its utilities in Copper Alloy plates for contemporary metal craft)

  • 이 논문은 현재에 통용되고 있는 동합금판 C2200, C5210, C7701, C8113 등의 특징 및 용도와 소재의 재질적 특성을 data화하였고, 그 표현의 가능성을 조사하여 수치화하였고, 그 기법실험의 1단계로서 일반접합과 TIG 접합에 대하여, 2단계 실험으로서 망상조직기법과 전해주조기법에 대하여 농하였으며, 이 기법을 응용한, 연구작품의 3가지 사례를 다루었다. 이 때 사용한 동합금은 (주)풍산금속 소재기술연구소 이동우 박사가 지원한 4가지 동합금, 즉 단동, 스프링용 인청동, 스프링용 양백, 백동을 사용하여, 적층기법, 망상조직기법, 융합기법, 전해주조기법을 작품에 따라서 통합 또는 부분적으로 적용시켰다. C2200 의 경우, 황동은 2mm이하의 박판(薄板)에서는 교류 TIG 용접법이 좋으며 그 이상에서는 직류 정극성 TIG 용접법으로, 용접에 의한 잔류 응력부식을 열처리를 250~300도에서 행한다. C5210 의 경우는 고온의 환원성기(還元性氣)중에서도 수소(水素) 취성이 없고 고온에서 O를 흡수하지 않으며, 경화(輕化) 온도도 약간 높아, 용접용으로 매우 적합하다. 일반적으로 Sn을 2-9% P를 0.03-0.4%정도 포함하고 있는데, Sn의 함유량이 증가함에 따라 응고 온도 범위가 광범위해졌으며 용접후의 냉각 시, 열분열 방지에는 TIG용접의 용접속도를 빠르게, 용융지(溶融池)를 작게, 예열 온도는 200도로 하는 것이 좋다. C7701의 경우는 조성범위가 10-20% Ni, 15-30% Zn의 것이 많이 사용된다. 약 30% Zn 이상이 되면(${\alpha}+{\beta}$) 조직이 되어 점성이 낮아지고 냉간 가공성은 저하하나 열간 가공성은 좋다. 양백은 또한 전기저항이 높고 내열, 내식성이 좋다. C8113의 경우는 내해수성, 내마모성이 우수하며 고온 강도가 높고 백동은 10-30% 니켈을 포함하며 완전히 고용(固溶)해서 단상(單相)이 된다. 이 때문에 결정입(結晶粒)도 크게 되기 쉬우며, 구속이 강한 경우 미량의 Pb, P, S라는 분열 감수성이 높아진다.

In-l5Pb-5Ag 솔더와 Au/Ni Surface Finish와의 반응 특성 및 접합 신뢰성 평가 (Reaction Characteristics between In-l5Pb-5Ag Solder and Au/Ni Surface Finish and Reliability Evaluation of Solder Joint)

  • Ball grid array (BGA) substrate 상의 0.5 $\mu\textrm{m}$Au/5 $\mu\textrm{m}$Ni/Cu 층으로 구성된 접촉 패드(pad)와 In-15(wt.%)Pb-5Ag 솔더 볼 사이에서 리플로우 및 고상 시효동안 일어나는 금속학적 반응 특성이 조사되었다. 1-5 분의 리플로우 시간에 따라 솔더/패드 계면에서 $AuIn_2$ 또는 Ni-In 금속간 화합물층이 형성됨이 관찰되었다. 리플로우 동안 용융 In-l5Pb-5Ag 솔더 내로의 Au 층의 용해 속도는 $2\times 10^{-3}$ $\mu\textrm{m}$/sec 정도로 측정되어 공정 Sn-37Pb와 비교하여 매우 느린 것으로 관찰되었다. $130^{\circ}C$에서 500시간의 고상 시효 후에는 초기 리플로우 시간에 관계없이 $Ni_{28}In_{72}$ 금속간 화합물층이 약 3 $\mu\textrm{m}$까지 성장하였다. 이를 통하여 솔더 합금에서의 In 원자들은 아래의 Ni 층과 반응하기 위하여 리플로우 동안 형성된 $AuIn_2$상을 통하여 확산하는 것으로 관찰되었다. 미세구조 관찰과 전단 시험을 통하여 In-l5Pb-5Ag합금의 경우는 Sn-37Pb 조성과는 달리 Au/Ni surface finish 상에 사용시에도 솔더 접합부에서의 Au-embrittlement를 야기 시키지 않는 것으로 분석되었다.

아말감의 구강내 부식 및 인공 부식에 관한 연구 (A STUDY ON IN VIVO AND IN VITRO AMALGAM CORROSION)

  • The objective of this study was to analyze the in vitro and in vivo corrosion products of low and high copper amalgams. The four different types of amalgam alloy used in this study were Fine cut, Caulk spherical, Dispersalloy, and Tytin. After each amalgam alloy and Hg were triturated according to the directions of the manufacturer by means of the mechanical amalgamator(Amalgam mixer. Shinhung Co. Korea), the triturated mass was inserted into a cylindrical metal mold which was 12mm in diameter and 10mm in height. The mass was condensed by 150Kg/cm compressive force. The specimen was removed from the mold and aged at room temperature for about seven days. The standard surface preparation was routinely carried out by emery paper polishing under running water. In vitro amalgam specimens were potentiostatically polarized ten times in a normal saline solution at $37^{\circ}C$(potentiostat : HA-301. Hukuto Denko Corp. Japan). Each specimen was subjected to anodic polarization scan within the potential range -1700mV to+400mV(SCE). After corrosion tests, anodic polarization curves and corrosion potentials were obtained. The amount of component elements dissolved from amalgams into solution was measured three times by ICP AES(Inductive Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometry: Plasma 40. Perkim Elmer Co. U.S.A.). The four different types of amalgam were filled in occlusal and buccal class I cavities of four human 3rd molars. After about five years the restorations were carefully removed after tooth extraction to preserve the structural details including the deteriorated margins. The occlusal surface, amalgam-tooth interface and the fractured surface of in vivo amalgam corrosion products were analyzed. In vivo and in vitro amalgam specimens were examined and analyzed metallographically by SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope: JSM 840. Jeol Co. Japan) and EDAX(Energy Dispersive Micro X-ray Analyser: JSM 840. Jeol Co. Japan). 1. The following results are obtained from in vitro corrosion tests. 1) Corrosion potentials of all amalgams became more noble after ten times passing through the in vitro corrosion test compared to first time. 2) After times through the test, released Cu concentration in saline solution was almost equal but highest in Fine cut. Ag and Hg ion concentration was highest in Caulk spherical and Sn was highest in Dispersalloy. 3) Analyses of surface corrosion products in vitro reveal the following results. a)The corroded surface of Caulk spherical has Na-Sn-Cl containing clusters of $5{\mu}m$ needle-like crystals and oval shapes of Sn-Cl phase, polyhedral Sn oxide phase. b)In Fine cut, there appeared to be a large Sn containing phase, surrounded by many Cu-Sn phases of $1{\mu}m$ granular shapes. c)Dispersalloy was covered by a thick reticular layer which contained Zn-Cl phase. d)In Tytin, a very thin, corroded layer had formed with irregularly growing Sn-Cl phases that looked like a stack of plates. 2. The following results are obtained by an analysis of in vivo amalgam corrosion products. 1) Occlusal surfaces of all amalgams were covered by thick amorphous layers containing Ca-P elements which were abraded by occlusal force. 2) In tooth-amalgam interface, Ca-P containing products were examined in all amalgams but were most clearly seen in low copper amalgams. 3) Sn oxide appeared as a polyhedral shape in internal space in Caulk spherical and Fine cut. 4) Apical pyramidal shaped Sn oxide and curved plate-like Sn-Cl phases resulted in Dispersalloy. 5) In Tytin, Sn oxide and Sn hydroxide were not seen but polyhedral Ag-Hg phase crystal appeared in internal space which assumed a ${\beta}_l$ phase.
