Structural behaviour of stainless steel stub column under axial compression: a FE study

  • This paper presents a Finite Element (FE) study on Lean Duplex Stainless Steel stub column with built-up sections subjected to pure axial compression with column web spacing varied at different position across the column flanges. The thicknesses of the steel sections were from 2 to 7 mm to encompass a range of section slenderness. The aim is to study and compare the strength and deformation capacities as well as the failure modes of the built-up stub columns. The FE results have been compared with the un-factored design strengths predicted through EN1993-1-4 (2006) + A1 (2015) and ASCE8-02 standards, Continuous Strength Method (CSM) and Direct Strength Method (DSM). The results showed that the design rules generally under predict the bearing capacities of the specimens. It's been observed that the CSM method offers improved mean resistance and reduced scatter for both classes of cross-sections (i.e. slender and stocky sections) compared to the EN1993-1-4 (2006) + A1 (2015) and ASCE 8-02 design rules which are known to be conservative for stocky cross-sections.

Novel quantitative trait loci for the strong-culm and high-yield related traits in rice detected from the F2 population between the super thick-culm and super grain-bearing line 'LTAT-29' and the high-yielding variety 'Takanari'

  • Lodging is a serious issue in rice production, because it drastically decreases the biomass production and grain yield. Since the Green Revolution, the lodging resistance has been increased by lowering the moment of above-ground parts due to the short culm by the semi-dwarf gene sd1. However, it has been pointed out that sd1 alone has suppressive effects for biomass production and yield. To increase rice yield, the long-culm and large panicle type varieties with a superior lodging resistance need to be developed. To improve the lodging resistance and yield of these type varieties, it would be effective to identify novel alleles for these traits underlying natural variations in rice and to pyramid these alleles to a single rice variety. In order to perform this strategy, we have developed new rice lines derived from crosses among varieties with superior alleles. At first, TULT-gh-5-5 was selected from a cross between strong culm and high biomass variety Leaf Star and high-yielding variety Takanari, and TUAT-32HB was selected from a cross between high-yielding variety Akenohoshi and Takanari. Then, we developed the super thick-culm and super grain-bearing line, LTAT-29 derived from a cross between TULT-gh-5-5 and TUAT-32HB. In the current study, to identify the QTLs and genes relating to the strong culm and the high yield of LTAT-29, we performed QTL analysis using SNPs markers with $F_2$ population derived from a cross between LTAT-29 and Takanari. LTAT-29 has never lodged throughout the growth period despite it had long culms and heavy panicles. LTAT-29 had a larger outer diameter of the culm and twice the size of the section modulus than Takanari. As a result, the bending moment at breaking of LTAT-29 was significantly larger than that of Takanari. Brown rice yield of LTAT-29 was $9.2t\;ha^{-1}$ about 10% higher than that of Takanari due to the larger number of spikelets per panicle. LTAT-29 had a greater number of secondary branches per panicle. In the $F_2$ population between LTAT-29 and Takanari, we found continuous frequency distributions in the section modulus and the spikelet number per panicle. Two QTLs increased the section modulus by the alleles of LTAT-29 were detected on Chr.1L and Chr.2L. One QTL increased the spikelet number per panicle of Takanari by the allele of LTAT-29 was detected on Chr.1L, and two QTLs increased the number of secondary branches per panicle by the alleles of LTAT-29 were detected on Chr.1L and Chr.4L. It was found that the alleles of these QTLs were the japonica type originated from Leaf Star or Akenohoshi. The novel QTLs for the traits related to super thick-culm and super grain-bearing and their combinations could be utilized for improving the lodging resistance and yield in rice varieties.

Dimensional Quality Assessment of Steel H-Beams Using Terrestrial Laser Scan Data

  • In the construction industry, steel structures are prominent due to their exceptional strength and high bearing capacity, making them resilient against natural calamities. However, the stability and overall structural integrity of these steel structures depend significantly on the precision of the individual steel members used. Presently, the dimensions of these steel members are typically measured manually using mechanical instruments such as steel tape and vernier calipers. This conventional approach is not only time-consuming but also highly vulnerable to human error. Consequently, there is a growing need for more accurate and reliable methods for assessing the dimensions of steel members. This paper aims to measure the dimensions of key checklists of the cross-section surface of the steel H-beams using Terrestrial Laser Scan (TLS) data. This study involves the automatic extraction of scan points associated with the cross-section surface of the H-beam members using RANSAC. By the end, an algorithm was developed to predict the actual edge points belonging to the boundary of the extracted surface and introduced an edge loss compensation model to compensate the losses occurred due to uncertainties. Experimental evaluations were conducted using various scan data collected from steel H-beam and the measured dimensions were subsequently compared with manual measurements and dimensions obtained through the previously proposed method, demonstrating that the measurements meet 1mm accuracy and are within the allowable tolerance range followed in industry. This research underscores the efficiency and reliability of the introduced approach, offering a promising solution to enhance the dimensional quality assessment of steel H-beams in the construction industry.

프로펠러 편심추력변동이 축계안정성에 미치는 영향 연구 (Effect of Propeller Eccentric Thrust Change on Propusion Shafting System)

  • 프로펠러축은 프로펠러 하중 및 편심추력의 영향으로 인해 정적, 동적, 과도상태 각각 거동의 패턴이 달라져 선미관 후부베어링의 국부하중 변화를 일으킴으로써 선박 축계의 안정성에 큰 영향을 미치며, 결과적으로 축 지지 베어링의 손상위험을 증가시킨다. 이를 방지하기 위한 일련의 축계정렬연구는 선급강선규칙과 조선소 지침을 기반으로 준정적 상태에서 축과 선미관 베어링간의 상대적 경사각과 유막유지, 선체변형에 따른 영향평가를 최적화 하는데 중점을 두어 진행 되어왔다. 그러나 보다 진일보한 형태의 추진축계의 안정성을 보장하기 위해서는 조타장치의 전타시 발생하는 급격한 선미유동장 변화와 같은 과도동적상태변화 조건에서의 상세 연구가 필요하다. 이러한 관점 하에 본 연구에서는 50,000 DWT 중형 유조선을 대상으로 스트레인 게이지법과 변위센서을 이용하여 선박운전 중 대표적 과도상태인 좌현 전타시의 프로펠러 축 거동이 선미관 베어링에 미치는 영향을 교차검증한 결과, 프로펠러 편심추력변동이 선미관 베어링의 하중을 일시적으로 저감시켜 베어링 하중을 완화시키는 것을 확인하였다.

프리캐스트 프리스트레스트 내화단면 중공슬래브의 부재두께에 따른 화재거동평가 (A Evaluation of Fire Behavior According to Member Thickness of Precast Prestressed Hollow Core Slab of Fire Resistance Section )

  • 최근 건설현장은 인건비 상승, 중대재해처벌법 등으로 인한 건설 현장 여건의 변화로 탈현장 여건으로 프리캐스트 부재 생산에 대한 관심이 증대되고 있다. 특히, 프리캐스트 프리스트레스트 중공슬래브는 단면 내 중공형상을 두어, 중량감소 및 강연선을 통한 처짐 제어 등으로 구조성능은 확보하고 있으나, 현재 내화 성능 개선에 대한 미비한 연구 뿐만 아니라, 기업들의 근거 없는 당연내화구조 기준을 적용함에 내화성능 확보에 대한 시급성이 대두되고 있다. 이 연구에서는 기존 중공 슬래브와 비교하여 동등이상 구조성능, 경제성을 갖기 위하여 슬래브단면 내 중공 형상 최적화를 통해 단면 내 콘크리트 충진률 감소 및 상하부 플랜지 형상 개선으로 내화단면을 개발하였다. 이를 적용한 PC 중공 슬래브에 대하여 단면두께를 변수로 하여 2시간 내화시험을 진행하여, 실험결과 내화 성능(하중지지력, 차열성, 차염성)을 확보 하였다. 실험 결과 기반으로, 수치해석 시뮬레이션을 통해 내화모델링을 정립하여, 추후 단면형상 변경에 따라 내화 해석 예측이 가능한 것으로 판단된다.

포트홀 다이에 의한 Al 튜브의 비정상상태 열간 압출 공정 해석 (Unsteady State Analysis of Al Tube Hot Extrusion by A Porthole Die)

  • Porthole die extrusion has a great advantage in the forming of long hollow section tubes. It is difficult to produce long hollow section tubes with complicated section by the conventional extrusion process with a mandrel on the stem Because of the limit of the length of mandrel and the complexity of cross section. Porthole die extrusion is affected by many parameters, such as extrusion ratio, extrusion speed, die geometry, porthole number, bearing length etc. Up to now, most of studies about porthole die extrusion have been investigated by experiments or steady state FE-analysis. However, in this paper, porthole die extrusion is analysed by the unsteady state 3D FE-simulation. And the result of unsteady state analysis is compared with the experimental result. Also, the surface state of extruded tubes are examined for the various process conditions.

선미관 밀봉장치의 개발에 관한 연구 (II) -풰이스 시일을 중심으로- (A Study on the Development of Ship's Stern Tube Sealing System(II) -Based on Face Seals-)

  • The lip seals widely used nowadays in stern tube sealing system of ships have radial sealing contact with shafts or liners, on the other hand the face seals of stern tube sealing system have axial sealing contact with seat. Because of axial sealing contact, the face seals have a large number of merits such as durability of life, simplicity of structure, easy fitting and replacement, etc. In this paper, for the purpose of development of face seals, the fundamental properties of axial sealing contact were analyzed and a trial face seal was designed and manufactured using N.B.R. rubber and Thordon which is widely used for bearing materials. The seal proper of trial face seal was made from N.B.R. rubber and the face insert was made from Thordon, thermosetting resins which are three dimensional, cross linked condensation polylmers. The performance test of trial face seal was carried out on the test bench which was specially designed and manufactured. The results were satisfactory enough to be used in practical stern tube sealing system.

慣性車 를 가진 回轉子 의 動特性 에 관한 硏究 (A Study on Dynamic Characteristics of Rotor with Flywheel)

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the general frequency expression for a rotating shaft of uniform cross section, supported by two bearings, and carrying flywheel at the free end. The bearing spacing and the ratio of the weight of flywheel to the total distributed weight are used as parameters. The data have thus been reduced to dimensionless form so that the results are generally applicable for this type of rotor. Frequencies for the first three modes of vibration are determined. Experimental investigation with rotor/flywheel model confirmed the critical speed frequencies lie between analytical models with simply supported-simply supported boundary conditions and spring supported-spring supported boundary conditions.

Compressive behavior of reinforced concrete columns confined by multi-spiral hoops

  • Numerical studies are performed to predict the stress-strain behavior of rectangular RC columns confined by multi-spiral hoops under axial and eccentric compressions. Using the commercial finite element package ABAQUS, the Drucker-Prager criterion and the yield surface are adopted for damaged plasticity concrete. The proposed finite element models are compared with the published experimental data. Parametric studies on concrete grades, confinement arrangement, diameter and spacing of hoops and eccentricity of load are followed. Numerical results have shown good agreements with experimental values, and indicated a proper constitutive law and model for concrete. Cross-sectional areas and spacing of the hoops have significant effect on the bearing capacity. It can be concluded that rectangular RC columns confined by multi-spiral hoops show better performance than the conventional ones.

  • Hybries which was made up by chromosome of L. longiflorum and L. x elegans, using root-tip individual which was obtained through ovary slice culture, and root-tip of these parents, with hoirugen staining, gimsa staining and Q-H staining inaccordance with the location and the existence of secondary construction which waslocating near short arm centromere of No, 1,2,6,9. In metaphase of meiosis ofhybrid which was made up by univalent from 2 individuals to 10 individuals wasobserved, and nuclear plate which was having abnormal type's synthesis amounted to91% of all cells whieh were observed. This result showed the fact that someobstacle arose annormal progress of the divission after that time. 63% of the cellshad micronucleus from 1 individlial to 4 individuals in tetrad phase of meiosisdivision. The peroxidase and $\alpha$ -estelase zymogram phenotypes of parents andhybrids were determined using agarlose IEF gel. Crosses were performed betweenparents bearing dissimilar allelomorphs in orther to discern the genetic control ofthe resolved enzymes. Genetic variation of hybrids were detected at all but 2 plant progenies.
