  • Recent trends of global food production, processing, distribution and preparation under free trade circumstance are creating an increase in common' concerns about food safety. It is important that farmers improve agricultural products/food safety for satisfying consumer needs and health. Cognizant to the situation, this study was conducted to analyze how the Producers gather information, and determine their awareness about agricultural Products safety using a safety Questionnaire. The Questionnaire was given to 500 farmers who cultivate rice, fruit trees, vegetables, and other crops from September through October 2005. More than half of the producers felt concerns about the agricultural products/foods safety. Uneasiness of the producers was higher amongst those who were younger and earned a higher income. Pesticides and zoonosis (BSE AI, etc.) emerged as the main risk factors causing concerns among the greatest number of producers. Producers had a positive opinion of the effects and perception of food safety, but no opinion of the activity of government. The producers showed a high level of understanding of the Country of Origin Labeling System (88.2%), the quality certification system of agricultural and livestock products (71.9%), and the raising system of environment-friendly agriculture (72.7%). However, their level of understanding of the GAP (59.3%) and the Traceability System (22.8%) was still low. To effectively implement these policies, awareness of producers who are the beneficiaries of the above policies has to be enhanced. Therefore, the safety information should be provided at a more appropriate time and should be easier to understand.

  • Agriculture has the longest history in many industries and is directly or indirectly linked to human development. However, recently agriculture in Korea has difficulties in farm management due to the decrease of rural population, aging of society, increase of material costs, and climate change on the Korean peninsula. Smart farms using ICT are proposed as an alternative to solve these problems. Smart farms manage the temperature and water supply facilities of farms through various sensors, but there is a limit to the delicate management of crops. Therefore, in this paper, unlike the conventional moisture sensor, the water supply is varied according to the depth of the soil, thereby realizing an optimized environment for plant growth.

  • This paper analyzes the causal relationship from climate to international grain prices. Although climate is an important factor affecting the grain markets, it has been restrictively considered in previous studies analyzing the causal relationship of international grain prices. In this paper, monthly data from May 1987 to 2013 is used for the causal analysis in which the sea surface temperature (SST), a representative global climate variable, and the international prices of wheat, corn, and soybean, the world's three major crops, are considered. The test method is the parametric version of the nonparametric test for causality in high-order moments suggested by Nishiyama et al. (2011). The results show that the climate causes in the first moment the prices of all the three grains and causes in the second moment the prices of corn and soybean, but does not cause in the third moment any of the three grain prices.

  • Identification of host genes involved in disease progresses and/or defense responses is one of the most critical steps leading to the elucidation of disease resistance mechanisms in plants. Soybean mosaic virus (SMV) is one of the most prevalent pathogen of soybean (Glycine max). Although the soybeans are placed one of many important crops, relatively little is known about defense mechanism. In order to obtain host genes involved in SMV disease progress and host defense especially for virus resistance, two different cloning strategies (DD RT-PCR and Subtractive hybridization) were employed to identify pathogenesis- and defenserelated genes (PRs and DRs) from susceptible (Geumjeong 1) and resistant (Geumjeong 2) cultivars against SMV strain G7H. Using these approaches, we obtained 570 genes that expressed differentially during SMV infection processes. Based upon sequence analyses, differentially expressed host genes were classified into five groups, i.e. metabolism, genetic information processing, environmental information processing, cellular processes and unclassified group. A total of 11 differentially expressed genes including protein kinase, transcription factor, other potential signaling components and resistant-like gene involved in host defense response were selected to further characterize and determine expression profiles of each selected gene. Functional characterization of these genes will likely facilitate the elucidation of defense signal transduction and biological function in SMV-infected soybean plants.

  • Some application of the sensor networks such as crop management must control the temperature within a proper range. The energy-efficient applications and protocols for them are needed. In this paper, we propose an energy efficient application protocol which can meet these needs. We use the concept of safety zone to manage the appropriate range of properties within our algorithm. We name our proposed algorithm "MSZ". To assess the performance of the proposed algorithm the actual temperature data was collected using the sensor node. The algorithm was implemented through programming and compared with the other algorithms. Experimental results show that the MSZ algorithm has a much better performance than that of APTEEN in terms of energy efficiency as well as has the ability of determining the status of sensor nodes with the periodical transmitting. Our MSZ algorithm can be useful in applications developments for the management of crops, fermented food and etc.

  • Climate change affects the growth of crops which were planted especially in fields, and it becomes more important to use climate data to predict the yields of the major vagetables. The variation of the crop products caused by climate change is one of the significant factors for the discrepancy of the demand and supply, and leads to the price instability. In this paper, using a panel regression model, we predicted the garlic yields with the weather conditions of different regions. More specifically we used the panel data of the several climate variables for 15 main garlic production areas from 2006 to 2015. Seven variables (average temperature, average maximum temperature, average minimum temperature, average surface temperature, cumulative precipitation, average relative humidity, cumulative duration time of sunshine) for each month were considered, and most significant 7 variables were selected from the total 84 variables by the stepwise regression. The random effects model was chosen by the Hausman test. The average maximum temperature (January), the cumulative precipitation (March, October), the cumulative duration time of sunshine (April, October) were chosen among the variables as the significant climate variables of the model

  • Recently, the cooling water of power plant was included in RPS(Renewable Portpolio Standard) as water heat energy. Thus the trend of cooling water application is growing bigger for agriculture and fishing industry. Especially as energy consumption cost in agriculture and fishing industry is a vital element, the interests for energy efficiency is growing bigger. The advanced agriculture country like Netherlands is distributing diagnosis software to the farmers based on ICT diagnostic system for the efficient energy consumption and energy demand amounts depend on crops of cultivation in automated horticulture. Hereafter, in the preparation of the expansion of the automated agriculture domestically by the cooling water of power plant, we would like to propose the energy application case(Greenery) in the advanced countries abroad in agriculture and EMS system about the application of the cooling water in power plant.

  • Recently, the demand for energy efficiency improvement technology through the connection of waste heat energy and SmartGrid has been increasing. Thus, investments for the cultivation of high value crops and produce is increasing through research aimed at synthetic technology in real-time utilization of smart farms and waste heat energy with the concept of using container greenhouses and plant factories. In this aspect, we have carried out research on a practical application technology that will help farmers to increase the economic effectiveness of LED based plant factories in terms of energy efficiency. This can provide opportunities to connect with the large scale automated smart farms in the future. In this study, we focused on the economic effectiveness of crop cultivation using cooling technology in a container greenhouse through waste heat energy. Hereafter, in order to further advance the technology of real-time monitoring/control of the absorption chiller which is used through the container greenhouses and waste heat energy by using IOT, we would like to propose research on new ideas of agricultural technology that can maximize the utility of cooling energy by operating a mobile gateway based on Raspberry PI.
