Critical state theory involves two state boundary surface. One is Roscoe surface and the other is Hvorslev surface. The shape of these boundary surface was changed because of several parameters : Critical state constant(M), spacing ratio (r) and critical state pore pressure coefficient($\wedge$). As these constants make difference to each model and the way of solution, they may affect the shape of state boundary surface. Specially, spacing ratio (r) is important. On this study, triaxial compression test was performed using remolded weathered mudstone soil and investigated variation of state boundary surface because of spacing ratio. In the results of prediction, critical state point was located highly and the shape of boundary surface was changed more tightly curve as decreasing spacing ratio.
This paper proposes a revised Modified Cam Clay type failure surface based on the critical state theory. In the plane of the mean effective and von Mises stresses, the original Modified Cam Clay model has an elliptic failure surface which leads the critical-state mean effective stress to be always half of the pre-consolidation mean effective stress without hardening and evolution rules. This feature does not agree with the real mechanical response of clay. In this study, the preconsolidation mean effective stress only reflects the consolidation history of the clay whereas the critical state mean effective stress only relies on the currenct void ratio of clay. Therefore, the proposed failure surface has a distorted elliptic shape without any fixed ratio between the preconsolidation and critical state mean effective stresses. Numerical simulations for various clays using failure surfaces as yield surface provide mechanical responses similar to the experimental data.
This paper aims at the temperature and slenderness ratio effects on physical and mechanical properties of Beishan granite. A series of uniaxial compression tests with various slenderness ratios and temperatures were carried out, and the acoustic emission signal was also collected. As the temperature increases, the fracture aperture of intercrystalline cracks gradually increases, and obvious transcrystalline cracks occurs when T > 600℃. The failure patterns change from tensile failure mode to ductile failure mode with the increasing temperature. The elastic modulus decreases with the temperature and increases with slenderness ratio, then tends to be a constant value when T = 1000℃. However, the peak strain has the opposite evolution as the elastic modulus under the effects of temperature and slenderness ratio. The uniaxial compression strength (UCS) changes a little for the low-temperature specimens of T < 400℃, but a significant decrease happens when T = 400℃ and 800℃ due to phase transitions of mineral. The evolution denotes that the critical brittle-ductile transition temperature increases with slenderness ratio, and the critical slenderness ratio corresponding to the characteristic mechanical behavior tends to be smaller with the increasing temperature. Additionally, the AE quantity also increases with temperature in an exponential function.

This study conducted a series of drained triaxial test in order to determine the critical state parameters of a high compressible Jeju sand. Jeju sand is classified into mixed sand containing both siliceous and calcareous materials and has high extreme void ratios due to the angularity of grains and the intra-particle voids of hollow particles. It is observed that the behavior of Jeju sand is similar to that of general calcareous sand. The friction angle of Jeju sand at critical state gradually decreases with increasing the mean effective stress. Test result shows that the particle crushing resulted from stress during shear causes the reduction of void ratio at critical state.

This paper is second part on the auditory thresholds and fish behaviors to the underwater sounds for luring of target species at the set-net in the coast of Cheju. In order to obtain the critical ratio of yellow tails(Seriola quinqueradiata) and the emission level of underwater sound for luring of them, we make experiments to measure the auditory threshold of them using conditioning with electric shock. In state that the white noise with 10dB higher sound pressure level than ambient noise is emitted, the auditory thresholds of yellow tails are measured with 100~116.5dB and they are higher than those in state of no emission of white noise by the masking effects of it. Although sound pressure level of background noise go down, the auditory thresholds go up with frequency above than 300Hz.The critical ratio of yellow-tails in frequency of 80Hz, 100Hz, 200Hz, 500Hz, 800Hz are 46dB, 40dB, 50dB, 52dB, 60dB, 70dB respectively. The sound pressure level of which the signal sound is recognized by yellow tails under the ambient noise is above 100dB and the critical ratio of them is above 40dB.

A series of triaxial test was performed in order to determine critical state parameters of calcareous Jeju sand, which comprises angular shape particles with many pores in the surface. It is observed that Jeju sand mainly shows the contractive behavior during triaxial shear due to high extreme void ratios and large compressibility. The peak friction angle of Jeju sand decreases slightly with increasing mean effective stress due to the particle crushing of carbonate materials. However, the peak friction angle of Jeju sand is higher than that of other silica sands because of the more angular particle shape. The critical state friction angle of Jeju sand gradually decreases when the mean effective stress at a critical state increases. Whereas, there is not a clear influence of void ratio on the critical state friction angle. Critical state parameters of Jeju sand are similar to those of calcareous sands, but significantly larger than those of common sands.
An elasto-plastic constitutive model for geological materials, which satisfies the flezibility and stability at the same time, can be used in a number of geotechnical problems. Using the spacing ratio of critical state, a flexible model is proposed based on the stability of modified Camflay model. The spacing ratio of critical state can be simply evaluated, and practically used in describing the undrained shearing behavior of clay. The proposed model has precisely predicted the stress paths and stress -strain relationships, compared with the modified Camflay model, with respect to undrained triaxial test results. Besides, the effects of strain rate, creep, and relaxation can also be considered. Using the quasi-state boundary surface, the constitutive relations are well predicted. Therefore, it is found that the assumption of associative flow rule is well posed for undrained behavior of normally consolidated clay.
An experimental study on transient critical heat flux (CHF) under flow coastdown has been performed for the water flow in a non-uniformly heated vertical annulus under low flow and a wide range of pressure conditions. The objectives of this study are to systematically investigate the effect of the flow transient on the CHF and to compare the transient CHF with steady-state CHF The transient CHF experiments have been performed for three kinds of flow transient modes based on the coastdown data of a nuclear power plant reactor coolant pump. At the same inlet subcooling, system pressure and heat flux, the effect of the initial mass flux on the critical mass flux can be negligible. However, the effect of the initial mass flux on the time-to- CHF becomes large as the heat flux decreases. The critical mass flux has the largest value for slow flow reduction rate. There is a pressure effect on the ratio of the transient CHF data to steady-state CHF data. Except under low system pressure conditions, the flow transient CHF was revealed to be conservative compared with the steady-state CHF data. Bowling CHF correlation and thermal hydraulic system code MARS show promising results for the prediction of CHF occurrence .

Dynamics of a rotating cantilever beam near its critical angular speed is investigated in this paper. The external, force is idealized as a periodic function which has the same period as the rotati ng frequency of the beam. The equations of motion are derived and transformed into a dimensionless form. A prescribed spin-up motion is employed for the rotating motion. Numerical study shows that the steady state and the transient responses of the beam are affected by the spin-up time constant and there exists a time constant at which the maximum transient response becomes minimum.
The railroad bridges have been usually experienced by vibration and impact in service state. With this reason, it is important that the effective strengthening capacity should be considered to resist the kind of service loading. In this study, NSM strengthening technique is recommended for the concrete railroad bridge because of its better effective resistance for dynamic loading condition and strengthening cost than the conventional externally bonded strengthening using fiber sheet. However, to widely apply NSM method for the concrete railroad bridge, it needs that the strengthening ratio has to be reasonably evaluated with geometrical and material uncertainties, especially for the concrete bridge under long-term service state without the apparent design history and detail information such as concrete compressive strength, reinforcing ratio, railroad characteristics. The purpose of this study is to propose the critical strengthening ratio of CFRP plate for the targeted concrete railroad bridge with uncertainties of deterioration of the structures. To do this, Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) for geometrical and material uncertainties have been applied so that this approach may bring the reasonable strengthening ratio of CFRP plate considering probabilistic uncertainties for the targeted concrete railroad bridge. Finally, the critical strengthening ratio of NSM strengthened by CFRP plate is calculated by using the limit state function based on the target reliability index of 3.5.
