The dynamic stability problem of nonconservative system is one of the important problems. In this study, flexible missile with mass variation is regarded as a free Timoshenko beam subjected to a controlled follower force. The stability was studied numerically through the finite element method. Through the study, the obtained results are as follows: [1] Without force direction control (1) In the case of no mass reduction, the existence of concentrated mass increases critical follower force. (2) Mass reduction rate of the beam slightly effects on the change of critical follower force. [2] With force direction control (1) Shear deformation parameter S contributes insignificantly to the force at instability when $S{\geq}10^4$. (2) With mass variation, increase of concentrated mass increases critical follower force at instbility. (3) The type of promary instability is determined by the sensor location.
The critical fluid velocity of cantilevered cylindrical shells subjected to internal fluid flow is investigated in this study. The fluid-structure interaction is considered in the analysis. The cantilevered cylindrical shell is supported intermediately at an arbitrary axial position. The intermediate support is simulated by two types of artificial springs: translational and rotational spring. It is assumed that the artificial springs are placed continuously and uniformly on the middle surface of an intermediate support along the circumferential direction. The steady flow of fluid is described by the classical potential flow theory. The motion of shell is represented by the first order shear deformation theory (FSDT) to account for rotary inertia and transverse shear strains. The effect of internal fluid can be considered by imposing a relation between the fluid pressure and the radial displacement of the structure at the interface. Numerical examples are presented and compared with existing results.
Under severe lateral loads, ductile moments-resisting reinforced concrete frames will be subjected to large loads and displacements. Thus, large deformation and shear stree are occurred at the beam-column joints which are the most critical region in ductile moments-resisting system. The purpose of this study was to investigate the shear strength of beam-column connection using high strength concrete. Four subassemblies were designed 2/3 scale of read structures and tested. The obtained results are as follows. 1) The transverse beams increase the shear resistance and ductility of joint, 2) The slab was contributed to increase of the flexural capacity of the beam, but was not contributed to increase the joint ductility under cyclic loads. 3) The shear stress factors. given by the ACI code would be modified in evaluating the shear strength of beam-column joints of frame which were constructed with high-strength concrete.
UHPC(Ultra High Performance Concrete) is used widely with its remarkable performance, such as strength, ductility and durability. Since the fibers in the UHPC can control the tensile crack, the punching shear capacity of UHPC is higher than that of the conventional concrete. In this paper, seven slabs with different thickness and fiber volume ratio were tested. The ultimate punching shear strength was increased with the fiber volume ratio up to 1%. The shear capacity of specimens with the fiber content 1% and 1.5% do not have big differences. The thicker slab has higher punching shear strength and lower deformation capacity. The critical sections of punching shear failure were similar regardless of the fiber volume ratio, but it were larger in thicker slab.
This research aims to estimate the shear strength of the composition of prestressed hollow-core slab and steel beam. The shear strength of prestressed hollow-core slab combined with the steel beam decreases, as the beam deflection increases to a considerable extent. Existing studies on the shear strength of prestressed hollow-core slab are mostly limited to 265mrn- and larger thickness slab on concrete beam. This study investigates the slab of 100mm-thickness combined with steel beam instead of concrete beam. Five shear connector methods are proposed and the shear strength is estimated with or without the beam deflection for each composition method, respectively. Finally the reduction coefficient $(\beta)$ for the transverse shear stress$(\tau_{zx})$, which is critical for the failure of prestressed hollow-core slab, is proposed.
In this paper, reinforcement of soil shear strength by bamboo(substitute materials simulating a root system) are evaluated by soil strength parameters(apparent cohesion(c) and internal friction angle(tan${\Phi}$)), using simple shear tester which clearly depicts shear deformation and controls soil suction. The results show that the internal friction angle does not change under various soil suction conditions but the apparent cohesion, which reach a peak in suction of 45cm$H_2O$ near critical capillary head, is effected by soil suction. And the reinforcement of soil strength by bamboo are expressed by apparent cohesion more than internal friction angle. In addition the increment of apparent cohesion by bamboo reached a peak in suction 45cm$H_2O$ too.
In the present study, a finite strip method for the vibration and stability analyses of anisotropic laminated composite plates is developed according to the higher-order shear deformation theory. This theory accounts for the parabolic distribution of the transverse shear strains through the thickness of the plate and for zero transverse shear stresses on the plate surfaces. In comparison with the finite strip method based on the first-order shear deformation theory, the present method gives improved results for very thick plates while using approximately the same number of degrees of freedom. It also eliminates the need for shear correction factors in calculating the transverse shear stiffness. A number of numerical examples are presented to show the effect of aspect ratio, length-to-thickness ratio, number of plies, fibre orientation and stacking sequence on the natural frequencies and critical buckling loads of simply supported rectangular cross-ply and arbitrary angle-ply composite laminates.
This paper presents a thorough investigation into the structural performance of cold-formed steel column bases using double lipped C sections with bolted moment connections. A total of four column base tests with different connection configurations were carried out, and it was found that section failure under combined bending and shear was always critical. Moreover, the proposed column bases were demonstrated to be structurally efficient attaining moment resistances close to those of the connected sections. In order to examine the structural behaviour of the column base connections, a finite element model was established using shell and spring elements to model the sections and the bolted fastenings respectively. Both material and geometrical non-linearities were incorporated, and comparison between the test and the numerical results was presented in details. The design rules originally developed for bolted moment connections between lapped Z sections were adopted and re-formulated for the design of column base connections after careful calibration against the test data. Comparison on co-existing moments and shear forces at the critical cross-sections of the column bases was fully presented. It was shown that the proposed design and analysis method was structurally adequate to predict the failure loads under combined bending and shear for column bases with similar connection configurations.

A bending moment $M_u$ transferred at slab-column connection is resisted at the slab critical section by flexure and shear. The ACI 318-05 Building Code(1) gives an empirical equation for the fraction ${\gamma}_{\upsilon}$ of the moment $M_u$ to be transferred by shear at the slab critical section at d/2 from the column face and also the effective wide(c+3h). The equation is based on tests of interior slab-column connections without shear reinforcement. In order to investigate the data eight test specimens were examined. The test shows that increased slab load substantially reduces both the unbalanced moment capacity and the lateral drift capacity of the connection. Especially, the specimens with the bottom reinforcement existence and nonexistence, appears remarkable differences. Studies also show that the code equation for ${\gamma}_{\upsilon}$ does not apply to all cases. The purpose of this study is to compare the test results with present ACI 318-05 Building Code provisions for design of slab-column connections and with the analysis of the experimental data for a new limitation of strength equation without shear reinforcement and bottom reinforcement.
