Critical loads and load-carrying capacities for steel scaffolds used as shoring systems were compared using computational and experimental methods in Part I of this paper. In that paper, a simple 2-D model was established for use in evaluating the structural behavior of scaffold-shoring systems. This 2-D model was derived using an incremental finite element analysis (FEA) of a typical complete scaffold-shoring system. Although the simplified model is only two-dimensional, it predicts the critical loads and failure modes of the complete system. The objective of this paper is to present a closed-form solution to the 2-D model. To simplify the analysis, a simpler model was first established to replace the 2-D model. Then, a closed-form solution for the critical loads and failure modes based on this simplified model were derived using a bifurcation (eigenvalue) approach to the elastic-buckling problem. In this closed-form equation, the critical loads are shown to be function of the number of stories, material properties, and section properties of the scaffolds. The critical loads and failure modes obtained from the analytical (closed-form) solution were compared with the results from the 2-D model. The comparisons show that the critical loads from the analytical solution (simplified model) closely match the results from the more complex model, and that the predicted failure modes are nearly identical.
In the present study, buckling analysis of sandwich composite (carbon nanotube reinforced composite and fiber reinforced composite) Euler-Bernoulli beam in two configurations (core and layers material), three laminates (combination of different angles) and two models (relative thickness of core according to peripheral layers) using differential quadrature method (DQM) is studied. Also, the effects of porosity coefficient and different types of porosity distribution on critical buckling load are discussed. Using sandwich beam, it shows a considerable enhancement in the critical buckling load when compared to ordinary composite. Actually, resistance against buckling in sandwich beam is between two to four times more. It is also showed the critical buckling loads of laminate 1 and 3 are significantly larger than the results of laminate 2. When Configuration 2 is used, the critical buckling load rises about 3 percent in laminate 1 and 3 compared to the results of configuration 1. The amount of enhancement for laminate 3 is about 17 percent. It is also demonstrated that the influence of the core height (thickness) in the case of lower carbon volume fractions is ignorable. Even though, when volume fraction of fiber increases, differences grow smoothly. It should be noticed the amount of decline has inverse relationship with the beam aspect ratio. Among three porosity patterns investigated, beam with the distribution of porosity Type 2 (downward parabolic) has the maximum critical buckling load. At the end, the first three modes of buckling will be demonstrated to investigate the effect of spring constants.
The notched Charpy impact test is one of the most prevalent techniques used to characterize the effect of high impulse loads on polymeric materials. In this study, a method of analysis in nylon plastic materials is suggested to evaluate the critical strain energy release rate for variation of notch angles from the Charpy impact energy measurement. Instrumented Charpy impact tester was used to extract ancillary information concerning fracture parameters in addition to total fracture properties and maximum critical load. The dynamic stress intensity factor of nylon plastic material was calculated for the ASTM Charpy specimen from the obtained maximum critical load. Also, the finite element model was developed to figure out the stress distributions for Charpy specimen with different notch angles subject to 3 point bending load which is equivalent to the load applied in the experiment.
Paldang is a river reservoir located in the Midwest of Korea, with a water volume of $244{\cdot}10^6m^3$ and a water surface area of $36.5km^2$. It has eutrophied since the construction of a dam at the end of 1973, and the phosphorus concentration has decreased since 2001. Average hydraulic residence time of the Paldang reservoir is about 10 days during the spring season and 5.6 days as an annual level. The hydraulics and water quality of the reservoir can differ greatly, both temporally and spatially. For the spring period (March to May) in 2001 ~ 2017, the reservoir mean total phosphorus concentration calculated from the budget model based on a plug-flow system (PF) and a continuous stirred-tank reaction system (CSTR) was 13 % higher and 10 % lower than the observed concentration, respectively. A composite flow system (CF) was devised by assuming that the transition zone was plug flow, and that the lacustrine zone was completely mixed. The mean concentration calculated from the model based on CF was not skewed from the observed concentration, and showed just 6 % error. The retention coefficient of the phosphorus derived from the CF was 0.30, which was less than those of the natural lakes abroad or river reservoirs in Korea. The apparent settling velocity of total phosphorus was estimated to be $93m\;yr^{-1}$, which was 6 ~ 9 times higher than those of foreign natural lakes. Assuming CF, the critical load line for the total phosphorus concentration showed a hyperbolic relation to the hydraulic load in the Paldang reservoir. This is different from the previously known straight critical load line. The trophic state of the Paldang reservoir has recently been estimated to be mesotrophic based on the critical-load curve of the phosphorus budget model developed in this study. Although there is no theoretical error in the newly developed budget model, it is necessary to verify the validity of the portion below the inflection point of the critical-load curve afterwards.
Many novel materials, developed in recent years, have obvious properties with different modulus of elasticity in tension and compression. The ratio of their tensile modulus to compressive modulus is as high as five times. Nowadays, it has become a new trend to study the mechanical properties of these bimodular materials. At the present stage, there are extensive studies related to the strength analysis of bimodular structures, but the investigation of the buckling stability problem of bimodular rods seems to cover new ground. In this article, a semi-analytical method is proposed to acquire the buckling critical load of bimodular slender rod. By introducing non-dimensional parameters, the position of neutral axis of the bimodular rod in the critical state can be determined. Then by combining the phased integration method, the deflection differential equation of bimodular pin-ended slender rod is deduced. In addition, the buckling critical load is obtained by solving this equation. An example, which is conducted by comparing the calculation results between the three of the methods including the laboratory tests, numerical simulation method and the method we developed here, shows that the method proposed in the present work is reliable to use. Furthermore, the influence of bimodular characteristics on the stability is discussed and analyzed.
The plane contact problem for two infinite elastic layers whose elastic constants and heights are different is considered. The layers lying on a Winkler foundation are acted upon by symmetrical distributed loads whose lengths are 2a applied to the upper layer and uniform vertical body forces due to the effect of gravity in the layers. It is assumed that the contact between two elastic layers is frictionless and that only compressive normal tractions can be transmitted through the interface. The contact along the interface will be continuous if the value of the load factor, ${\lambda}$, is less than a critical value. However, interface separation takes place if it exceeds this critical value. First, the problem of continuous contact is solved and the value of the critical load factor, ${\lambda}_{cr}$, is determined. Then, the discontinuous contact problem is formulated in terms of a singular integral equation. Numerical solutions for contact stress distribution, the size of the separation areas, critical load factor and separation distance, and vertical displacement in the separation zone are given for various dimensionless quantities and distributed loads.

This paper presents the idea of a smart load that can adjust the input power flow based on the intermittent power available from RESs (Renewable Energy Resources) to regulate the line voltage, and draw a constant power from the grid. To this effect, an innovative power flow controller is presented based on a Resistive ES (Electric Spring) in combination with a PEAT (Power Electronics based Adjustable Transformer), which can effectively shape the load power flow at the subnetwork level. With a PEAT incorporated in the step down transformer at the grid side, the proposed controller can supply non-critical loads through local RESs, and the critical loads can draw a relatively constant power from the grid. If there is an abundance of power produced by the RESs, the controller can supply both non-critical loads and critical loads through the RES, which significantly reduces the power demand from the grid. The principle, practicality, stability analysis, and controller design are presented. In addition, simulation results show that the power flow controller performs well in shaping the load power flow at the subnetwork level, which decreases the power demand on the grid. Experimental results are also provided to show that the controller can be realized.

Critical current$(I_c)$ degradation of High $T_c$ Superconducting(HTS) tapes and AC loss under mechanical load is one of the hottest issues in HTS development and application. Mechanical load reduces the critical current of superconducting wire, and the $I_c$ degradation affects the AC loss of the wire. We measured the $I_c$ degradation and AC loss under tension and bending of Bi-2223 tapes made by 'Powder-in-Tube' technique at 77K with self-field. Also, we have studied the frequency characteristics on self-field AC loss in multi-filamentary Bi-2223/Ag tape at 77K. The measurement results and discussions on the relationship between $I_c$ degradation and AC loss are presented.

Pile foundations are utilized when soil is so weak that shallow foundations are not suitable or point load is concentrated in small area. Such soil can be formed by the land reclamation works which have extensively been executed along the coastal line of southern and western parts of the Korean Peninsula. The working load at pile is sometimes subjected to not only compression load but also lateral load sad uplift forces. But in most of the practice design, uplift capacity of pile foundation is not considered and estimation of uplift capacity is presumed on the compression skin friction. This study was carried out to determine that the effect of embedment ratio and loading rate on uplift adhesion factor of concrete pile driven in clay. Based on the test results, the critical embedment ratio is about 9. Adhesion factor is constant under the critical embedment ratio, and decreasing over the critical embedment ratio. Also, adhesion factor is increased with the loading rate is increased.
