  • Precast deck joints have larger crack width than cast-in-place concrete decks. The initial crack typically occurs at the maximum moment but cracks on precast joints are significant and lead to failure of the deck. The present crack equation is applied to cast-in-place decks, and requires correction to calculate the crack width of precast deck joints. This research aims to study the crack width correction equation of precast decks by performing static tests using high strength and normal strength concrete. Based on experimental results, the bending strength of the structural connections of the current precast deck is satisfied. However it is not suitable to calculate and control the crack width of precast loop connections using the current design equation. A crack width calculation equation is proposed for crack control of precast deck loop joints. Also included in this paper are recommendations to improve the crack control of loop connections.

  • The effect of the mold preheat temperature on the solidification crack strength was investigated in AC2B aluminum alloy. A tension type apparatus as part of a solidification crack test which could measure the stress-strain relationship quantitatively was utilized. The evaluation of the solidification crack strength with varying mold preheat temperatures was performed by the test procedure established in this research. When the mold preheat temperatures were $250^{\circ}C$, $150^{\circ}C$ and $50^{\circ}C$, the solidification crack strengths were found to be $7.8Kgf/cm^2$, $12.9Kgf/cm^2$ and $28.6Kgf/cm^2$, respectively. In the same way, when the mold preheat temperatures were $250^{\circ}C$, $150^{\circ}C$ and $50^{\circ}C$, the corresponding temperatures of the failure sites were $610^{\circ}C$, $600^{\circ}C$ and $571^{\circ}C$, and the calculated solid fractions were 14.0%, 29.3% and 50.8% when the specimens failed, respectively. The solidification crack strength increased in proportion to the solid fraction of the failure site. The solidification crack strength obtained in this test is assumed to reflect the effects of metallurgical factors on the thermo-plastic characteristics of a solidifying alloy such as the grain size of the solid, the grain morphology, and the distribution of solid grain.

  • It has been reported that fatigue damage sometimes occurred at the stress concentrated and dynamic loaded structural members of bulk carrier. In this paper, studies on fatigue strength of hull structures are reviewed, and the program for evaluating fatigue strength is developed. And the fatigue crack initiation and propagation on the end part of cargo hold frame of bulk carrier were calculated by FEM stress analysis and the fatigue strength evaluation program. These method can be applied not only to the crack initiation life but also to crack propagation life for the hull structural members at the hull design stage and be effective as the guideline to prevent the crack initiation or to estimate the fatigue strength for repairing of the fatigue damaged structures of real ships.

  • This paper describes a calculation of an average crack spacing and the maximum crack width for the high-strength concrete tensile and flexural members. Based on the uniform bond stress distribution of the average steel and concrete strains over the transfer length, the crack spacing and the crack width are proposed to utilize influence of the concrete strength and the cover thickness. This analytical results presented in this paper indicate that the proposed equations can be more effectively estimated the maximum crack width and the average crack spacing of the reinforced concrete flexural and tensile members.

  • Steel fiber and Polymer are used widely for the reinforcement material of RC structures because of its excellence of durability, serviceability as well as mechanical properties. Polymer-Steel fibrous high strength concrete beam's input ratio are 1.0%. The shear span-to-depth ratio are 1.5, 2.8 and 3.6, compressive strength of specimens 320kg/㎠, 436kgf/㎠ and 520kgf/㎠ in 28 days. The static test was carried out to measure the ultimate load, the initial load of flexural crack and of diagonal crack, from which crack patte군 and fracture modes are earned. Also, stress-strain, load-strain and load-deflection are examined during the test cracks(shear crack, flexural crack, and diagonal tension crack), when the load values are sketched according to the growth of crack. Result are as follows; (1) The failure modes of the specimens increase in rigidity and durability in accordance with the increase of mixing steel fiber and polymer. (2) The load of initial crack was the same as the theory of shear-crack strength (3) Polymer-Steel fibrous high strength concrete beams have increased the deflection and strain at failure load, improving the brittleness of the high strength concrete. (4) In this result of study, an additional study need to make a need formular because the study is different from ACI formular and Zsutty formular.

  • In this study, Fatigue behavior of laser weldment in heterogeneous materials was investigated. Fatigue strength test and fatigue crack propagation test were performed for specimens with laser weldment in heterogeneous materials, and hardness test was performed. From the fatigue strength test. it was observed that the difference of strength between heterogeneous materials had eflect on crack initiation position and fatigue limit. From the fatigue crack propagation test. it was observed that fatigue behavior of laser weldment in heterogeneous materials is different from that in same materials. The difference of strength between heterogeneous materials and laser weldment had effect on fatigue crack propagation rate.

  • Ultra High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) has a outstanding tensile hardening behaviour after a crack develops, which gives ductility to structures. Existing shear strength model for fiber reinforced concrete is entirely based on crack opening behavior(mode I) which comes from flexural-shear failure, not considering shear-slip behavior(mode II). To find out the mode I and mode II behavior on a crack in UHPFRC simultaneously, maximum shear strength of cracked UHPFRC is investigated from twenty-four push-off test results. The shear stress on a crack is derived as variable of initial crack width and fiber volume ratio. Test results show that shear slippage is proportional to crack opening, which leads to relationship between shear transfer strength and crack width. Based on the test results a hypothesis is proposed for the physical mechanics of shear transfer in UHPFRC by tensile hardening behavior in stead of aggregate interlocking in reinforced concrete. Shear transfer strength based on tensile hardening behavior in UHPFRC is suggested and this suggestion was verified by comparing direct tensile test results and push-off test results.

  • Crack-healing behavior of $Si_3N_4$ composite ceramics has been studied as functions of heat-treatment temperature and amount of additive $SiO_2$ colloidal. Results showed that optimum amount of additive $SiO_2$ colloidal and coating of $SiO_2$ colloidal on crack could significantly increase the bending strength. The heat-treatment temperature has a profound influence on the extent of crack healing and the degree of strength recovery. The optimum heat-treatment temperature depends on the amount of additive $SiO_2$ colloidal. Crack healing strength was far the better cracked specimen with $SiO_2$ colloidal coating on crack surface. After heat treatment at the temperature 1,273 K in air, the crack morphology almost entirely disappeared by scanning prob microscope. At optimum healing temperature 1,273 K, the bending strength with additive $SiO_2$ colloidal 0.0 wt.% without $SiO_2$ colloidal coating recovered to the value of the smooth specimens at room temperature for the investigated crack sizes $100\;{\mu}m$. But that with $SiO_2$ colloidal coating increase up to 140 %. The amount of optimum additive $SiO_2$ colloidal was 1.3 wt.% and crack healed bending strength with $SiO_2$ colloidal coating increase up to 160 % to smooth specimen of additive $SiO_2$ colloidal 0.0 wt.%. Crack closure and rebonding of the crack due to oxidation of cracked surfaces were suggested as a dominant healing mechanism operating in $Si_3N_4$ composite ceramics.

  • A quantitative study of impact damage of a soda-lime glass was carried out. An initiation and a propagation of cracks by the impact of two inds of steel ball was investigated. The fron, side and rear view of cracks were observed by a stereo-microscope. And the lowering of the benidng strength due to the impact of steel balls was examined through the 4-point bending test. A transparent glass is very helpful to understand and analyze the impact damage behavior of another brittle matereial. A deagdram about crack patterns according to the threshold impact velocity was sketched. A ring crack and a cone crack were formed at the low impact velocity. And as the impact velocity was higher, initial lateral crack was generated on the slanting surface of cone crack, and radial cracks were generated from the outermost ring crack. When the impact velocity of steel balls exceed a critical velocity, the contact site of specimens were crushed. According to the propagation of a cone crack, a rapid strength degradation occurred. In the specimen having crushed region, a bending strength was converged to a constant value instead of strength degradation.

  • Fatigue strength. especially crack initiation behavior of high strength steel under marine water environment was investigated. Marine structures were usually constructed by lot of weld joints and were designed by basis of the fatigue strength of weld joints. This study was carried out to mini. The fatigue initiation behavior is more important rather than crack propagation behavior under the design of marine structures, because it is very difficult to find out the crack propagation phenomena and repair the damaged part of welded joints in sea water Then, the new configuration specimen for fatigue crack initiation tests was proposed. Using this new specimen, it is easy to carry out the crack initiation tests with relatively low cycling loading and clearly find out a crack initiation fatigue life.
