  • Monodisperse, micron-sized, hybrid particles having a core-shell structure were prepared by coating the surface of poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA) microspheres with silica and by copolymerizing acrylamide (AAm) to supply the hydrogen bonding effect by means of the amide groups. Tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) was then slowly dropped onto the medium under certain conditions. Because of the hydrogen bonding between the amide of the PMMA particles and the hydroxyl group of the hydrolyzed silanol, a silica shell was generated on the PMMA core particles. The morphology of the hybrid particles was investigated with transmission (TEM) and scanning (SEM) electron microscopy as a function of the medium conditions and the amount of TEOS. Improved thermal properties were observed by TGA analysis.

  • Good appearance of insulation coating is required for non-oriented silicon steel sheets, The property is influenced by both the chemical composition of coating solution and the species of resin. The composition of inorganic-organic coating was studied to obtain good surface quality for non-oriented silicon steel. The greenish degree of coating surface depended on $Cr^{3+}$ content in the coating layer, which was satisfied when chromate content was more than 54.60 wt. %, in the coating solution. The homogeneous pattern and roughness of the coating surface depended on spreading property of the resin. Surface appearance of the coating could be improved by using resin with good spreading property at the chemical composition of chromate 59.00 wt.%.. resin 34.23wt.%, and etyhylene glycol 6.67 wt.% without colloidal sillica.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of nitriding on the fatigue strength and fatigue life of turbine rotor steel (ICr-lMo-0.25V), and acquire data on the fatigue strength of nitrided turbine rotor steel at high temperature (538$^{\circ}C$). Specimens were nitrided with various layer thicknesses (160$\mu$m, 270$\mu$m and 290$\mu$m) using the nitemper method. A microstructure analysis, microhardness test, surface roughness test, and fracture surface analysis were also carried out at room temperature in order to investigate the mechanical properties of the nitrided specimens.

  • Critical surcharge value of silt ground polluted with garbage leachate to the dyes $q_{cr}=3.73c_u$ and ultimate bearing capacity value $q_{ult}=8.60c_u$. Lateral flow pressure at polluted silt ground was about $P_{max}$/3 and depth of maximum lateral flow pressure was found at that of H/3 of soft layer thickness(H). Expression of polluted silt ground of fracture baseline at stability control charge by Matsuo Kawamura is $S_v=3.56\exp\{0.51(Y_m/S_v)\}$.

  • The purpose of this study is to show the friction and wear characteristics on the vapor deposited coating layers on the SCM415 steel. In this research, frictional wear characteristic of coating materials such as Ti-series, Cr-series & WC/C and TiAlN+WC/C multilayer coating was investigated under room temperature, normal air pressure and no lubricating condition. Therefore, this study carried out research on the friction coefficient, micro hardness(Hv), surface roughness and wear quantity on the vapor deposited coating layers on the SCM415 steel. As the wear experimental result, the excellence of TiAlN+WC/C multilayer coating has been proven by high micro-hardness, low friction coefficient and wear quantity.

  • By the localization of electro-chemical dissolution region, we succeeded in a few micrometer size hole drilling on stainless steel with the radial machining gap of about 1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Tens of nanosecond duration voltage pulses were applied between WC micro-shaft and stainless steel in the 0.1 M $H_2SO_4$ solution. Pt balance electrode was used to drill the high aspect ratio micro-hole without generation of Cr oxide layer on the machined surface. The effects of applied voltage, pulse duration, and pulse period on localization distance were investigated according to machining time. We suggested the taper reduction technique especially brought up on blind-hole machining. High quality micro-holes with 8 ${\mu}m$ diameter with 20 ${\mu}m$ depth and 12 ${\mu}m$ diameter with 100 ${\mu}m$ depth were drilled on 304 stainless steel foil. The various hole shapes were also produced including stepped holes and taper free holes.

  • Austenitic stainless steel AISI 304 was nitrided in a low-pressure RF plasma using pure nitrogen. With a treatment of time of 4.0h at $400^{\circ}C$, the nitrogen-rich layer on the sample was $3\mu\textrm{m}$thick and had a hardness of approximately 4.4 times higher than that of untreated material. XRD data showed that as the process temperature rose from 350∼$450^{\circ}C$, the expanded austenite peaks became more prominent while the austenite peaks became weaker. Expanded austenite was transformed to ferrite and CrN at the treatment of$ 500^{\circ}C$. Langmuir probe measurements showed that electron density decreased above $450^{\circ}C$.

  • Advanced high strength steels undergo recrystallization annealing in reducing gas atmosphere before galvanizing to improve mechanical properties. The selective oxidations of elements such as Mn, Si, Cr and Al during annealing decrease wettability of liquid zinc, resulting in bare spots and other defects. In this work, Fe-3wt%Mn steel sheet was annealed at $780^{\circ}C$ for 1200 sec. in 5% $H_2-N_2$ atmosphere and then dipped into zinc bath held at $460^{\circ}C$, which contained 0.2wt% dissolved Al. MnO crystallines in the average size of 200 nm were formed on the surface after annealing. It is estimated that MnO has been detached into bath with the formation and growth of inhibition layer with longer immersion time during galvanizing. No evidence of aluminothermic reduction of MnO has been found in this study.

  • This paper reports a novel masking method with various mask materials for wet etching of glass. Various mask materials such as Cr/Au, Ti/Au, Polyimide and thick SU-8 photoresist were investigated for borosilicate glass (Borofloat33) etching in concentrated hydrofluoric acid (48% HF). Polyimide and thick SU-8 photoresist are not suitable as masking material due to its poor adhesion to glass surfaces. Titanium has good adhesion is suitable as the first layer to make multi-protective layers. The best protection was obtained with a combination of Ti/Au, polyimide and Ti/Au as masking material with etch depth of $350{\mu}m$ achieved.

  • In this paper, various electrochemical experiments were conducted in seawater solution to evaluate corrosion damage behavior of arc thermal sprayed Inconel 625 coating on SS400 steel in marine environment. As a result, corrosion damages of thermal sprayed Inconel 625 coating preferentially occurred at the defect area, and they were observed as a form of pitting corrosion in the galvanostatic experiments. In Tafel analysis, corrosion current density of Inconel 625 coating was relatively high due to influence of interconnected pores and Cr oxides in the thermal spray coating layer. On the other hand, the result of the potential measurement, thermal sprayed Inconel 625 coating should need the post-treatment which can compensate the defects like pores and cracks because Inconel 625 coating presented a higher potential of about 290 mV than that of the SS400 steel.
