A Study on the Method of Nonlinearity Correction in a GM Counter

  • A method is presented here in order to determine a nonlinearity correction of observed counter rates in a GM counter. An expression, which is developed under the assumption of dead time dependence on counting rates, gives good agreement with the results obtained from the experimental work. The variation of pulse voltages from a GM counter with counting rates was measured with the aid of pulse height analyzer. This method gives accurate values for the dead time over a wide range of counting. The technique as outlined allows tile exact correction of the nonlinearity caused by dead time loss. It was observed that the dead time decreases as the counting rate increases.

  • A rapid method for the measurement of the absolute activity of carbon-14 in cotyledons and root of etiolated pea seedlings has been developed. Fresh tissue was frozen in liquid air, ground and suspended in gel phosphor and subjected to measurement for its radioactivity by liquid scintillation counter. Apparent activity of the suspended tissue sample calculated by counting efficiency value obtained by internal standardisation, was found to be related to absolute activity of the tissue, determined by flask combustion technique, by a constant factor. Once this factor is determined experimentally, analysis of C-14 lebelled tissue involves only fairly simple suspension counting by liquid scintillation counter. Present method appears to be applicable to other tissues tagged with C-14.

  • In shipbuilding, hull assemblies are manufactured by welding. The thermal deformation caused by the welding produces shape deformation. Counter-deformed design methods have been used in shipyards to cope with the weld-induced deformation of ship assembles. Finite element methods (FEMs) are frequently used to estimate welding distortion in the counter-deformed design. For the estimation of welding distortion, producing uniform rectangular elements is required to enter thermal loads on the welding line and obtain accurate analysis results. In this paper, a new automatic mesh generation method is proposed for prediction of welding deformation in FEM. Meshes are constructed for test cases to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed mesh generation method.

  • The typical hydraulic system of hoist is composed of a hydraulic supply unit, a directional control valve, counter balance valve, and flow control valves. The flow capacity coefficients of flow control valves should be adjusted so that the hoist is operated at moderate speed and the hydraulic energy loss is minimized. However, it is difficult to adjust the flow coefficients of flow control valves by trial and error for optimal operation. Here, the steady state model of the hoist hydraulic system including the differential cylinder circuit is derived and the optimal flow capacity coefficients of flow control valves are obtained using the complex method that is one kind of constrained direct search method.

  • This paper deals with the vehicle arbitration algorithm used in communication system between vehicles and a roadside control unit. To Improve the performance of vehicle arbitration, a random delay counter method is taken into account and modified to select the optimal maximum count value according to the vehicle arrival rate. The suggested algorithm is tested by computer simulation andthe enhanced performance was shown. This method could be applied to various systems which include the communications between transponders and a control unit.

Enhanced catalytic activity of Pt counter electrodes employing ZnO nanorods for dye-sensitized solar cells (Pt-ZnO 상대전극을 가지는 염료감응형 태양전지의 광전변환 특성 분석)

  • In order to increase the energy conversion efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), we employed a counter electrode that was platinum coated using a doctor blade technique on synthesized ZnO nanostructures on fluorinedoped tin oxide (FTO). The ZnO nanostructures possessing high electrochemical activity and large surface area of the counter electrode were grown by a chemical bath deposition (CBD) method at various times, 2, 4, and 8 h. The efficiency of DSSC with the Pt-ZnO counter electrode was improved 7.01% (grown for 2 h), 7.63% (grown for 4 h), and 6.13% (grown for 8 h), respectively. Compared with a standard DSSC without ZnO nanostructures, whose efficiency was 6.27%, the energy conversion efficiency increased approximately 22% for the DSSC with the Pt-ZnO (grown for 4 h) electrode. It indicates that the Pt coated on the ZnO nanostructure improves the electrocatalytic activity of the counter electrode.

Effects of Deposition Method of Thermally Decomposed Platinum Counter Electrodes on the Performance of Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells (염료 감응형 태양전지 효율에 미치는 백금 상대 전극 제조공정의 영향)

  • In this work, two different platinum (Pt) counter electrodes have been prepared by spin coating a Pt solution and screen printing a Pt paste on fluorine doped tin oxide (FTO) glass substrate followed by sintering at $380^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. Linear sweep voltammetry (LSV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analyses of the Pt electrodes showed that the spin coated electrode was catalytically more active than the screen printed electrode. The above result agrees well with the surface morphology of the electrodes studied by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and the photovoltaic performance of the dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) fabricated with the Pt electrodes. Moreover, calculation of current density-voltage (j-V) curves according to diode model with the parameters obtained from the experimental j-V curves and the EIS data of the DSSCs provided a quantitative insight about how the catalytic activity of the counter electrodes affected the photovoltaic performance of the cells. Even though the experimental situations involved in this work are trivial, the method of analyses outlined here gives a strong insight about how the catalytic activity of a counter electrode affects the photovoltaic performance of a DSSC. This work, also, demonstrates how the photovoltaic performance of DSSCs can be improved by tuning the performance of counter electrode materials.

U-type Cross-Counter Indirect Evaporative Cooler made of Plastic/Paper (U형 직교 대향류 플라스틱/종이 재질 간접증발소자)

  • In Korea, the summer is hot and humid, and much electricity is consumed for air conditioning. Thus, the simultaneous usage of an indirect evaporative cooler and a common air conditioner could reduce the sensible heat and save electricity. This study developed a U-type cross-counter flow indirect evaporative cooler (IEC) made of plastic and paper. The efficiencies were compared with those of a cross-flow IEC. The specimen was $500mm{\times}500mm{\times}1000mm$. the results show that the indirect evaporation efficiencies of the cross-counter flow sample were 6-21% higher than those of the cross-flow sample. The pressure drops of the cross-counter sample were 51-66% higher. Thermal analysis based on the -NTU method predicted the experimental data within 10%. The electrical energy saved by the use of the cross-counter flow IEC was larger than that of the counter flow IEC, and the difference increases with the velocity. However, the the cross-counter IEC is two times larger than the cross-flow IEC, which may increase the material cost and water usage.

  • The time to measure the size distribution using Condensation Nuclei Counter(CNC) and Differential Mobility Analyzer(DMA) can be shortened by classifying particles ramping the DMA voltage exponentially and continuously. In measurement, particles sampled at different time are mixed together going through sampling tube and CNC. Because the size distribution is inversed by using detector responses to sampling time intervals in this accelerated method, the mixing effects give inversion errors to the size distribution. The mixing effects can be considered by appling the transfer function with mixing effects to the data inversion. The inversion considering this effects gives birth to the size distribution shifted to the opposite direction of the size scanning.
