6- [(Halopheny1) amino]-7-Bromo-5,8-Quinolinediones Treatment of Candidiasis in Normal Mice

  • A series of 6-[(N-Halophenyl)amino] -7-Bromo-5,8-quinolinediones (BQs) newly synthesized were tested for antifungal activities, in vitro, against Candida sp., Aspergillus niger and Trichophyton mentagrophytes. The MIC values were determined by the twofold dilution method. Among these derivatives, BQ4 and 7 showed more potent antifungal activities than fluconazole and ketoconazole. BQ 4 and 7 were compared with fluconazole in the treatment of established systemic infections with Candida albicans in normal rats. Intraperitoneally administered BQs for 7 days and 14 days reduced Candida albicans colony count in kidneys and livers as well as fluconazole. The therapeutic potential of BQs has been assessed by evaluating their activities (survival rate) against systemic infections in normal mice with Candida albicans. These compounds, particularly showed activities comparable with fluconazole. BQ4 and 7 had about EO$\_$50/, 0.05, 0.06mg/kg but fluconazole had ED$\_$50/, 6.0mg/kg respectively.

The Effectiveness and Preferences of Nutritional Supplementary Drinks for the Elderly (노인들을 대상으로 한 영양보충음료에 대한 기호도 및 영양적 효과)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness and preferences of supplementary drinks for very old subjects who are likely to be malnourished. Twenty- five elderly subjects were divided into two groups. The supplemented group(N=15) received 500mls of nutrient supplement(New Care) two times daily for 4 weeks. This resulted in a significant increase in the total calories, protein, minerals and vitamins. Nutritional status was assessed both anthropometrically and biochemically, before and after the study period. A significant improvement in mid arm circumference, triceps skinfold thickness and serum albumin were observed in the supplemented group but not in the control group. There is a possibility that most of the elderly were in an anemic state at the beginning of the study since their mean hematologic parameters were within the lower normal range while their mean serum osmolarities was slightly higher than normal, . Although mean serum hemoglobin and hematocrit were not increased significantly, th percentage of the recovery rate from anemia in the supplemented group was higher than in the control group. Total lymphocyte count also showed similar tendency. Sensory evaluation of nutritional supplementary drinks were relatively good and the elderly showed great interest in nutrient supplements. This study suggests that a nutritional status of poorly nourished elderly subjects can be improved by providing them with nutritional supplementations.

A Robust Sequential Preprocessing Scheme for Efficient Lossless Image Compression (영상의 효율적인 무손실 압축을 위한 강인한 순차적 전처리 기법)

  • In this paper, we propose a robust preprocessing scheme for entropy coding in gray-level image. The issue of this paper is to reduce additional information needed when bit stream is transmitted. The proposed scheme uses the preprocessing method of co-occurrence count about gray-levels in neighboring pixels. That is, gray-levels are substituted by their ranked numbers without additional information. From the results of computer simulation, it is verified that the proposed scheme could be reduced the compression bit rate by up to 44.1%, 37.5% comparing to the entropy coding and conventional preprocessing scheme respectively. So our scheme can be successfully applied to the application areas that require of losslessness and data compaction.

Inhibitory Effects of Acetic Acid and Temperature on Growth of Campylobacter jejuni ATCC 33291

  • The growth inhibition of Campylobacter jejuni ATCC 33291 in the presence of $1\%$ acetic acid at 4, 25, and $42^{\circ}C$, followed by $25^{\circ}C$ and $4^{\circ}C$, at pH 5.5 and pH 6.5, and by the addition of $1\%$ acetic acid aat 4, 25, and $42^{\circ}C$ were determined to be 22, 8.5, and 1.4 min, respectively, in an FBP-SBB medium. The D values of C. jejuni were increased by the addition of chicken and did not follow the linear relationship observed in the FBP-SBB media without chicken. When using distilled water instead of FBP-SBB in the model system, the death rate of C. jejuni was dramatically accelerated. The injured or low cell numbers that were impossible to enumerate using the plate count method, were detected by a polymerase chain reaction and enrichment culture procedure. These results suggested that acetic acid is reliable and effective as a disinfectant, however, it is necessary to take additional care at refrigeration temperatures due to the potential of injred cells during poultry processing.

  • Optimum counting condition of a low level liquid scintillation counter for radiocarbon dating has been determined to minimize the contribution of tritium activity and get the highest FOM by the variation of scintillation solutions, scintillation solution to benzene ratio, and ${\beta}$-ray spectrum counting ranges. Under the condition, background count rate has been reduced to $2.26{\pm}0.03cpm$, and the maximum measurable age reached to about 40,000 years. And the practicality of counting system has been verified by the analysis of shell and peat samples.

Chemical Transformation of Individual Asian Dust Particles Estimated by the Novel Double Detector System of Micro-PIXE

  • By the application of novel double detector system of micro-PIXE that can detect light elements (Z<14), we made an attempt to provide a thorough discussion on the aging processes of Asian dust (hereafter called "AD") particle by reaction with sea-slat. The elemental spectra and maps obtained from the microbeam radiation of micro-PIXE to individual AD particles were useful for fractionating AD particles into both internally and externally mixed particles. A spatial distribution of elements in a minute domain of single particle obtained by scanning the microbeam irradiation enabled us not only to estimate the chemical mixing state of individual AD particles but also to presume their aging processes in both ambient air and cloud. By calculating the normalized micro-PIXE net count of elements, it was possible to classify individual AD particles into three distinct groups (i.e., (1) Aging type 1: AD particle coated by the gaseous Cl evaporated by the reaction between artificial acids and sea salt; (2) Aging type 2: AD particle mixed with sea salt but no additional reaction with artificial acids; and (3) Non-aged type) A relatively high transformation rate (63.3-75.9%) was shown in large particles (greater than $5.1\;{\mu}m$ in diameter).

Design of a Low Memory Bandwidth Inter Predictor Using Implicit Weighted Prediction Technique (묵시적 가중 예측기법을 이용한 저 메모리 대역폭 인터 예측기 설계)

  • In this paper, for improving the H.264/AVC hardware performance, we propose an inter predictor hardware design using a multi reference frame selector and an implicit weighted predictor. previous reference frame are reused for Low Memory Bandwidth. The size of the reference memory in the predictor was reduced by about 46% and the external memory access rate was reduced by about 24% compared with the one in the reference software JM16.0. We designed the proposed system with Verilog-HDL and synthesized inter predictor circuit using the Magnachip 0.18um CMOS standard cell library. The synthesis result shows that the gate count is about 2,061k and the design can run at 91MHz.

  • Partial discharges(PD)in air insulated electric power apparatus often lead to deterioration of solid insulation by electron bombardments and electrochemical reaction. The PD caused to reduce the life time of power apparatus and to increase power losses. Thus understanding and classification of PD patterns in air are very important to discern sources of PD. In this paper, PD in air by using statistical methods was investigated. We classified air discharges, corona, surface discharges and cavity discharges by Kohonen network. For classification of PD patterns, we used statistical operators and parameters such as skewness$(S^+,\; S^-),\; kurtosis(K^+, K^-),\; mean phase(AP^+, AP^-)$, cross-correlation factor(CC) and asymmetry derived from the mean pulse-height phase distribution$(H_{avg}(\phi))$, the max pulse-height phase distribution $(H_{qmax}(\phi))$, the pulse count phase distribution $(H_n(\phi))$ and the pulse height vs. Repetition rate $(H_q(n))$.

  • As the integrated circuit device shrinks to smaller dimensions, chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) process was required for the global planarization of inter-metal dielectric (IMD) layer with free-defect. However, as the inter-metal dielectrics (IMD) layer gets thinner, micro-scratches are becoming as major defects. Micro-scratches are generated by agglomerated slurry, solidified and attached slurry in pipe line of slurry supply system. To prevent agglomerated slurry particle from inflow, we installed 0.5${\mu}m$ POU (point of use) filter, which is depth-type filter and has 80% filtering efficiency for the $1.0{\mu}m$ size particle. In this paper, we studied the relationship between defect generation and pad count to understand the exact efficiency of the slurry filtration, and to find out the appropriate pad usage. Our preliminary results showed that it is impossible to prevent defect-causing particles perfectly through the depth-type filter. Thus, we suggest that it is necessary to optimize the flow rate of slurry to overcome depth type filters weak-point, and to install the high spray of de-ionized Water (DIW) with high pressure.

ACOUSTIC EMISSION BEHAVIOR DURING STRESS CORROSION CRACKING OF INCONEL 600

  • Acoustic Emission (AE) technique was applied to stress corrosion cracking of Inconel 600 to investigate the AE capability of detecting crack growth and to obtain the relation between AE characteristics and crack mechanism. The specimens were heat-treated in two conditions (600$^{\circ}C$ for 30 hrs or 700 $^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr) and undergone CERT at two extension rates ( 2.5${\times}$10$^{-5}$ or 1.25${\times}$10$^{-4}$(mm/s)). It was found that the AE peak amplitude from plastic deformation was generally smaller than about 48dB (0.25mV), while Intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC) and ductile fracture produced higher values of 49 to 70dB (0.3mV to 3mV). The slopes of cumulative amplitude distribution (b-values) were linearly dependent on IGSCC susceptibility and the higher the susceptibility, the smaller the b-value. The monitoring of combined AE parameters such as event rate, amplitude, count and energy can provide effective means to clearly identify the transition from crack initiation and small crack growth to rapid growth of dominant cracks.
