  • In this study, effect of horizontal in situ stress on failure mechanism around underground openings excavated in isotropic, elastic rock zones is investigated. For estimating the plastic zone occurrence, an induced stress influence area approach (Bray Equations) was modified to define critical stress ratio according to the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. Results obtained from modified calculations were compared with results of some other analytical solutions for plastic zone thickness estimation and the numerical modelling (finite difference method software, FLAC2D) study. Plastic zone and its geometry around tunnels were analyzed for different in situ stress conditions. The modified equations gave similar results with those obtained from the other approaches. However, safer results were calculated using the modified equations for high in situ stress conditions and excessive ratio of horizontal to vertical in situ stresses. As the outcome of this study, the modified equations are suggested to use for estimating the plastic zone occurrence and its thickness around the tunnels with circular cross-section.

  • The use of shield is increasing day by day, because it's method is advantageous tunneling method to soft and collapsible ground. In case of analyzing shield tunnel by FEM, short term behavior of ground by initial heaving and tail void closure and long terms of it because of consolidation by changes of pore pressures in clay must be considered. In this paper, the shield tunneling construction stages was analyzed from 2 dimensional elasto - viscoplastic finite element program used Mohr - Coulomb yield criterion but not considered the changes of pore pressures. The object of investigation was N - 2 Tunnel. Since the good results of analysis compared to the measured behavior of ground for heaving, tail void closure and liner installation, this results can be applied to design and construction of shield tunneling for the subways, sewage lines etc.

  • It is well known that the peak strength envelope of geomaterials with no cohesion, such as sand, gravel and rockfill, exhibits significant curvature over a range of stresses. In a practical design of slope, however, the linear Mohr-Coulomb's failure envelope is used as a failure criterion and consequently gives inaccurate safety factors, especially for some ranges of small normal stresses on shallow failure surfaces. Necessity of a nonlinear shear strength envelope in slope stability analysis is on this point. Hence, this study describes how to evaluate nonlinear shear strength of gravel fill materials using the results of large triaxial tests under consolidated-drained condition, and compares the safety factors from slope stability analyses for a homogeneous gravel fill or rockfill embankment incorporating the non-linearity of strength, so as to show its effects on safety factors.

  • By focusing on the resonant vibration mode of soil-underground structure system, this paper obtained dynamic soil stiffness and easy sliding conditions at the interface between soil and underground structure. Multi-step method is employed to isolate two primary causes of soil-structure interaction. Mohr-Coulomb criterion is used to determine the threshold level of the sliding. To find out the conditions the interface slides easily, parametric studies are performed about the factors governing sliding, which are the size and location of underground structures, ground condition, the configuration of surface deposit and interface friction coefficients.

  • In the analysis of deformation in which the stiffness is greatly different between the adjacent materials, the desired results have been obtained by using the interface element method compared with those secured by the conventional method of the concept of continua. This study deals with the deformation analysis of soft foundation by the introduction of interface element. The physical conditions of interface element are divided into three categories by Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion ie. sliding, separation, and contact. Finally the accuracy of the program proposed in this paper is proved highly accurate by performing the comparison of the theoretical values numerical results of a model element with simplified boundary conditions.

  • In recent times, the subterranean caverns for storing crude oils and oil products are increasingly needed. The elasto-VIScoplastic DYNamic finite element analysis program(VISDYN) has been developed in order to investigate dynamic responses of the storage cavity. And validity of the program is studied through a numerical example. Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion is adopted and associated flow rule is assumed. Geometrically nonlinear behaviour is taken into account using a total Lagrangian formulation. In dynamic deformation reponses, the difference between the steady state displacements and the unsteady state ones by the static analysis can be neglected.

  • Geomembrane, compacted clay liner, and geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) are widely used to prevent leachate from leaking to adjacent geo-environment at a municipal solid waste (MSW) landfill. Interface shear strength between GCL and geomembrane installed at a landfill side slope is important properties for the safe design of side liner or final cover systems. The interface shear strength between two geosynthetics was estimated by a large direct shear test in this study. The shear strength was evaluated by the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion. The effects of normal stress, hydration or dry condition, and a hydration method were investigated. The test results show that the interface shear strength and shear behavior varied depending up on the level of normal stress, the type of geosynthetic combinations, and a hydration method. When GCLs were sheared after being hydrated under 6kPa loading, the results were consistent with those published by other researchers. Summaries of friction angles, normal stress and hydration condition is presented. These friction angles could be used as a reference value at a site where similar geosynthetics are installed.

  • Numerical liquefaction model and response history analysis procedure are verified based on dynamic centrifuge test results. The test was a part of the Liquefaction Experiments Analysis Project (LEAP). The model ground was formed inside of rigid box by using the submerged Ottawa F65 sand with a relative density of 55% and 5° of surface inclination. A tapered sinusoidal wave with a frequency of 1 Hz was applied to the base of the model box. Numerical analyses were performed by two dimensional finite difference method in prototype scale. The soil is modeled to show hysteretic behavior before shear failure, and Mohr-Coulomb model is applied for shear failure criterion. Byrne's liquefaction model was applied to track the changes in pore pressure due to cyclic loading after static equilibrium. In order to find an appropriate flow condition for the liquefaction analysis, numerical analyses were performed both in drained and undrained condition. The numerical analyses performed under the undrained condition showed good agreement with the centrifuge test results.

  • Theoretical equations are derived to estimate the larteral earth pressures acting on piles with various shape of pile section due to lateral soil movements. And also examination of characteristics of the equations and comparison with other equations are carried out. The equations can be derived by calculating the difference between the two earth pressures acting on front and back sides of pile's row under plastic state satisfying Mohr-Coulomb's yield criterion, which is developed on tile soil between two piles among the piles in a row. The theoretical equations can reasonably consider the pile section-shape, the pile interval and the plastic condition in the soils just around piles. Additionally, the factors about soils and piles influencing on the lateral earth pressures are clarified and the high reliability of the equations is proved.

  • This study suggests three spatial distribution functions of strength parameters, which can be adopted in the derivation of failure conditions for transversely isotropic rocks. All three proposed functions, which are the oblate spheroidal function, the exponential function, and the function based on the directional projection of the strength parameter tensor, consist of two model parameters. With assumption that the cohesion and friction angle can be described by the proposed distribution functions, the transversely isotropic Mohr-Coulomb criterion is formulated and used as a failure condition in the simulation of the conventional triaxial tests. The simulation results confirm that the failure criteria incorporating the proposed distribution functions could reproduce the general trend in the variations of the axial stress at failure and the directions of failure planes with varying inclination of the weankness planes and confining pressure. Among three distribution functions, the function based on the directional projection of the strength parameter tensor yields the highest axial strength, while the axial strength estimated by the oblate spheroidal distribution function is the lowest.
