One is the Atrophy of lung with consumptive fever, the other is the Atrophy of lung with consumptive cold. Four prescriptions can be used treat this disease. Pulmonary abscess(肺癰) is infected by poisonous fatcors of wind and heat. It's symptoms like coughing, chest pain, fever and phlegm with pus after coughing are appeared generally, in case of serious condition, pyemia after coughing can be appeared. This disease is applicable to lung abscess, bronchiectasis, lung gangrene. Six prescriptions can be used to treat this disease. Coughing and congestion of the head(咳嗽上氣) is called Lung-distension(肺腸). Its symptom is dyspnea caused by more expiration rather than inspiration. This disease is divided into two types like chronic asthenia type and inflammatory type. Seven prescriptions can be used to treat this disease.

  • Severe chronic coughing infrequently causes rib fractures and these fractures belong to Stress fracture and these rib fractures are given the term of "cough fractur". Cough fracture usually occurs in one rib and in the middle of the rib between the costochondral junction and the costal angle. The case is a report about a young woman with multiple rib fractures which were caused by severe coughing. The Chest PA and Rib series test were normal but Rib fractures were founded by Bone scan test. Treatment was Herb-medication, rest and restriction of work and symptoms were reduced.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to report the radiological and symptomatic changes in a patient with acute herniated lumbar disc due to coughing, treated with megadose pharmacopuncture and combined Korean medicine. Methods: MRI examination diagnosed an acute lumbar disc herniation by coughing. We performed a combination treatment of megadose pharmacopuncture and integrated Korean medicine. NRS, ODI, EQ-5D, SLR test, and big toe extension test were checked on admission, after two weeks, on discharge, and after four months to confirm symptom improvements. Results: In the acute stage of lumbar intervertebral disc rupture, megadose pharmacopuncture combined with Korean medicine treatment showed improvement in NRS, ODI, EQ-5D, SLRT, and big toe extension tests. In addition, absorption of the herniated intervertebral discs was observed through an MRI scan on discharge. Conclusions: For patients with herniated lumbar disc acutely deteriorated by coughing, a combination of megadose pharmacopuncture with Korean medicine treatment may be a solution.

  • Purpose: This survey aimed to identify cough etiquette knowledge and practice level among university students. Methods: 190 study subject were recruited from a university located in C city of Korea and data were collected utilizing self-reported questionnaires to evaluate cough etiquette knowledge and practice levels. Results: The score of cough etiquette knowledge was 7.38 out of 12 and the correct answer rate was 61.5%. The respondents showed the highest right answer rate (85.3%) on 'cover with a paper tissue or a handkerchief while coughing' and lowest (20.7%) on 'cover with hand while coughing'. Practice level score was 27.28 out of 48. Among those items of practice, 'wearing a mask while coughing' was the lowest (1.40/48) level of practice. And the correlation between knowledge and practice was not significant. Conclusion: Cough etiquette knowledge and practice level was revealed to be rather low among university students. Education and social marketing are needed to be developed to encourage the practice level of cough etiquette followed by better droplet infection control and health promotion.

  • The asthma is a clinical syndrome having three symptoms; dyspnea, wheezing and coughing, due to the narrowing of trachea in pulmonary system. Specially the asthma is common in children. The study was designed to identify the effect of Kinesio Taping Treatment as to asthmatic children. The Kinesio Taping Treatment was used on the Pectoralis major and Posterior diaphragm of twenty five asthmatic children(19 male, 6 female) for the period from September 1, 2001 to September 20, 2001. Peak expiratory flow rate(PEFR) for the condition of pulmonary function was measured using the Pocket Peak and wheeling and coughing symptom were measured using questionnaire. The results of this study are as follows: 1. There were statistically significant differences between before using the taping and after the kinesio taping increase of the PEFR(p<0.001). 2 There were statistically significant differences between before using the kinesio taping and after the kinesio taping improvement of the wheezing sign(p<0.001). 3. There were statistically significant differences between before using the kinesio taping and after the kinesio taping improvement of the coughing symptom(p<0.001).

  • Tracheal collapse at the thoracic inlet is described in a 4 year-old female yorkshire terrier. The initial presenting signs included coughing, dyspnea, cyanosis and collapse. Diagnosis was based upon the clinical signs, physical examination, plain radiography and fluoroscopy. The collapse was corrected by the aplication of a neumber of modified total ring prostheses (m-TRP) applied to the cervical trachea. Clinical complicatons were minimal and limited to mild, short-term coughing. The present study indicated that m-TRP were easy to apply to tracheal collapse and were able to decrese clinical signs. Therefore, m-TRP may be applied to tracheal collapse as new prostheses.

  • Congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation [CCAM] of the lung is a rare but often fatal congenital lung bud anomaly that causes acute respiratory distress in the newborn infants. In those who survive infancy and early childhood, its clinical manifestations are not unusual to detect. Recently we experienced two children with CCAM; one with coughing and high fever, another without any symptom On case I, the patient was a 9 year-old female, and was suffered from coughing and high fever since 15 days before. Medical treatment was failed and then, exploratory thoracotomy was performed under the impression of loculated empyema. Finally, a right lower lobectomy was done with a satisfactory postoperative course. On case II, the patient was a 12 year-old female, and admitted for evaluation of known large pulmonary cyst which was checked at the outpatient clinic. Preoperative evaluations gave no more informations, so obliteration of cysts was performed with open biopsy. Two patients with CCAM are described in Korean Univ. Medical Center.

  • A 70-year-old male visited urgent care due to coughing for 1 month and left chest pain. He had no history of trauma. The initial chest computed tomography (CT) showed the 7th left intercostal lung herniation. A follow-up CT showed an intercostal lung herniation combined with a bowl herniation, which had developed due to a Morgagni's hernia. An emergency operation was performed due to the incarceration of the bowl and lung. The primary repair of the diaphragm was performed and the direct approximation of the 7th intercostal space was determined. We concluded that the defect of the diaphragm and the intercostal muscle was a congenital lesion, and the recurrent coughing was the aggravating factor of herniation.

  • We observed 82 cases of primary lung cancer clinically and statistically, which had been experienced at the dept. of thoracic surgery, Chonnam University Hospital, during the period of 13 years from 1964 to 1967. The results obtained were as follows: Peak incidence of age was from 5th decade to 6th decade, and the ratio of male to female was 3: 1. The frequency of lung cancer was higher in the heavy smoker than in the lighter smoker, and undifferentiated carcinoma showed low resectability in spite of the shorter clinical duration. Major symptoms were coughing and chest tightness & pain, especially coughing was initial symptom in the majority of patients. Of the 82 cases, operation was performed in the 32 cases [39%], but resection was possible in the 22 cases [27%]. The delaying factors led patients to an inoperable stage were physician’s misdiagnosis of bronchogenic carcinoma due to non-specific symptoms and signs of the patients, old age patients were dependence on herb medicine, and poor economical condition of the patients in our region especially. Basic conditions of treatment in lung cancer were early detection & early surgery, so, chest P-A would be checked per 3 to 6 months interval associated with sputum cytology in the smoker over 45 age routinely.
