The inhibitory effect of extracts from 15 edible plants on the protease of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) type 1 was investigated. Protease activity was determined by incubating the extracts in a reaction mixture containing protease and substrate His-Lys-Ala-Arg-Val-Leu-(p-NO$_2$-Phe)-Glu-Ala-Nle-Ser-NH$_2$ to inhibit proteolytic cleavage. Of various plants tested, the leaves of Cedrela sinensis inhibited the HIV-1 protease by 42% at a concentration of 100$\mu\textrm{g}$/ml. A major flavonoid isolated from the leaves of C. sinensis, quercetin 3-O-$\alpha$-L-rhamnoside showed inhibitory activity of 19% at a concentration of 100$\mu$M.
This research was to investigate the inhibitory effects of tyrosinase, elastase and collagenase using rapeseed meal extract for the functional cosmetics. Gamma-tocopherol and alpha-tocopherol contents were 304.9 and 212.2 mg/kg, respectively. In the case of delta-tocopherol and plastochromanol-8, they were 12.1 and 35.7 mg/kg, respectively. The total phenol content of methanol extract was the highest (49.6 mg/g) which was about 4.96 fold higher than that of water extract. The maximum nitrite scavenging activities of methanol and acetone extract at pH 1.2 were 85.2 and 80.1%, respectively, at 8.0 mg/mL. When the extract concentration of rapeseed meal increased upto 2.0 mg/mL, cell viabilities did not appear to have any significant cytotoxic effect, irrespective of extracts. Tyrosinase and elastase inhibition activities increased from 25.2 to 42.5% and 25.3 to 48.0%, respectively, as methanol extract concentration increased from 0.5 to 1.0 mg/mL. The collagenase inhibition activities of methanol and acetone extracts at 1.0 mg/mL were 67.2 and 68.0%, respectively. These results showed that the methanol and acetone extract of rapeseed meal can be used as a new source of functional cosmetic agent.
This study aims to propose a method to reduce hair damage after investigating the following: the factors which vary depending on hair treatment conditions; the degree of hair damage in the bleached sample; and an analysis of the effects of a perm on wave formation. To determine the effects of these treatment types, hair bleach was mixed with the hair treatment, and hair damage and formation of permanent waves were examined. Using a scanning electron microscope, in addition, morphological changes were analyzed and the following results were obtained: After mixing natural powder(2.5g) and hair cream(2.5g) and bleaching the mixture, it was compared to the scale structure of untreated hair. When 5g of natural powder was mixed and bleached, a clear layer was observed among cuticle scales, showing the effects of hair treatment. Therefore, this confirms that the effects of hair treatment were most notable when grain powder was mixed with hair cream. Once hair is damaged, it is almost impossible to regain its original state. When chemical agents are used, therefore, it is important to consider the possible hair damage they cause.
This study attempted to determine the effects of fermented green tea extracts on hair by using them in a perm. For this, hair is bleached, and then the fermented green tea extracts and water were supplied to the hair using a mist sprayer. Then the hair was permed, and hair damage was tested. Regarding hair moisture levels and wave formation, specifically, the morphological changes of hair were investigated with the Scanning Electron Microscope(SEM). The study results found the following. In terms of wave formation, the fermented green tea extract-based perm was much better than the general perm. In addition, hair bleaching was more serious in the latter. According to analysis on hair moisture using SEM, hair damage was more prevalent in the general perm as well. Therefore, it was confirmed that green tea extract-based perms cause less damage to the cuticle. In other words, the potential of fermented green tea extracts as a hair cosmetics material was discovered. Furthermore, it appears that the study results contribute to the development of low-irritating scalp and hair care products using the anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties of the fermented green tea extracts.
We isolated gallotannin, 2,6-digalloyl-1,5-anhydroglucitol, known as acertannin (1), from the barks and xylems of Acer ginnala Maxim. It is a genus of Acer species of shrubs in the family Aceraceae. A. ginnala grows in Korea, Japan and Mongolia. We accomplished the structure elucidation by confirming that the result of $^1H$,$^{13}C-NMR$,MS spectrum data was similar to previous references. We measured DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity in vitro to evaluate anti-oxidative activities on acertannin isolated from A. ginnala. Acertannin from A. ginnala exhibited potent DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activities. We examined the antioxidant and apoptosis modulative effects. This examination shows that A. ginnala has not only 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryhydrazyl(DPPH) radical scavenging activity and ABTS radical scavenging activity, but also human hair dermal papilla cell protection effects. These results indicate that the barks and xylems of A. ginnala might be developed as a potent anti-oxidant, hair growth agent, and ingredient for related new functional cosmetic materials.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of career decision self-efficacy and course maturity on followership types of undergraduate students majoring in beauty and provide basic data for development of guidelines that can facilitate career decisions. Subjects are 310 students majoring at beauty colleges and universities. Results of this study were as follows. First, career decision self-efficacy was influenced by two underlying factors such as, followership of thinking Style and fatterns of behavior. Second, the effect of followership types on career maturity was significant. Both the higher followership of thinking Style and fatterns of behavior, the career maturity was more affercted. Based on this study, students majoring in cosmetology were divided into type of followership and analyzed according to organic relevance of career decision self-efficacy and course maturity. Based on this, professors or mentors may understand characteristics of college students in cosmetology in explaining characteristics of their profession related to their major. It will be beneficial to provide an opportunity for beauty students to make a reasonable course maturity and career decision self-efficacy with followership types.
This research was to investigate physicochemical properties and antioxidative activities of rapeseed meal for the development of functional cosmetic material. Seventeen kinds of amino acid at rapeseed meal were found and glutamic acid concentration was significantly the highest (28.4 mg/g), followed by glycine, proline, arginine, isoleucine, and aspartic acid. Among various vitamins, cloline content was the highest (459.1 mg/kg), followed by niacin, tocopherol, and pantothenic acid. Among various fatty acids of rapeseed meal, oleic acid was the highest (36.7%), followed by linoleic acid and linolenic acid. DPPH radical scavenging activities of methanol and acetone extract of rapeseed meal at 2.0 mg/mL were 80.4 and 78.9%, respectively. The methanol and acetone extracts of rapeseed meal were a stable at the range of pH 3-9 on DPPH radical scavenging activity. The maximum reducing powers of methanol and acetone extract of rapeseed meal at 4.0 mg/mL were 0.7 and 0.68 OD 700 nm, respectively. The maximum superoxide inhibition activities of hot water, acetone, and methanol extract of rapeseed meal were 70.2, 75.2, and 81.4%, respectively. These results showed that the methanol and acetone extract of rapeseed meal can be used as a new source of functional cosmetic material.
This study was founded to identify the differences of the stress responses according to Sasang Constitutions(the Taeyangin, Taeumin, Soyangin and Soumin) of female college students. The subject were 226 the regular female students who majored in nursing in Kyungbuk, Kimcheon. Tools used in this study were the Questionnare for the Sasang Constitution Discrimination and the Scale for the Stress Response which were revised in some parts. The values of Cronbach's alpha for the Questionnare for the Sasang Constitution Discrimination and the Scale for the Stress Response were $0.45{\sim}0.73$ and $0.66{\sim}0.85$ respectively. The collected data was anaylyzed with the SPSS 10.0 windows statistical program. The results of this study were as follows; 1. The constitutions were shown in the order of Taeumin(45%), Soyangin(28%), Soumin(18%) and Taeyangin(9%). 2. There were significant difference in the stress response for Depression(p<.05), Anxiety(p<.05), Emotional irritability(p<.01) and the Total stress response(p<.05) according to the Sasang Constitutions (the Taeyangin, Taeumin, Soyangin and Soumin). In conclusion, it is needed to find out an effective ways of treating stress individually to apply Sasang Constitutions to a new esthetic treatment.

With the improvement of economic status and the desire for beauty, the interest in health and skin care is increasing. For these demands, since ages medicinal plants are in vogue. A variety of plants, cosmetics and foods with novel bioactive ingredients for skin care and beauty are under constant research and development. Skin is influenced by various factors such as Ultra-violet rays, stress, hormones and aging which together lead skin to lose elasticity, changes in pigmentation and wrinkle formation. Many medicinal plants have proven effects in skin care and beauty treatment. From this list of medicinal plants, one which is famous for its beauty, flavor and fragrance is Rosa damascene. Rosa damascene has many therapeutic action and postulated pharmacological studies such as anti-arthritic, anti-microbial, cardio protective, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, analgesic, immune-modulator, gastro-protective, and skin ameliorative effect. Research in the field of Cosmetology has proven the effect of Rosa damascene in rehydrating skin, reducing scars and stretches, acne management, lowering skin pigmentation, delaying wrinkling and is recommended as a skin vitalizing agent. In this review, the morphology, chemical constituents, and some pharmacological activity are discussed.
Our purpose in this study is to analyze the microstructural characteristics and constituent elements of inorganic substances added to the yellow ink and red ink pigments used in permanent makeup. We observed the microstructural properties of inorganic pigments added to the ink using a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and analyzed the constituent elements of the inorganic pigment particles using an energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). In red wine-colored ink, cubic titanium dioxide with a diameter of 110 to 200 nm was the major component, and rod-shaped iron oxide was rarely observed. Most of the ingredients of taupe yellow ink were rod-shaped yellow iron oxide, and a small amount of cubic titanium dioxide was observed. Red wine-colored ink and taupe yellow ink contained lumps composed of titanium dioxide particles. In red wine-colored ink, lumps were formed by agglomeration. However, we observed that the surface of the lump composed of titanium dioxide in the taupe yellow ink had a smooth surface caused by external physical compression. The titanium dioxide particle mass which found in taupe yellow ink in this study is an artificial product. When this mass accumulates in the dermis, it may cause a color mismatch. Therefore, permanent makeup using fine pigments should be free of foreign substances that may cause trouble in the skin. In addition, there is a need to improve the quality of the ink so that the required color can be safe and long lasting in the dermis.
