ORTHOGONAL DISTANCE FITTING OF ELLIPSES

  • We are interested in the curve fitting problems in such a way that the sum of the squares of the orthogonal distances to the given data points is minimized. Especially, the fitting an ellipse to the given data points is a problem that arises in many application areas, e.g. computer graphics, coordinate metrology, etc. In [1] the problem of fitting ellipses was considered and numerically solved with general purpose methods. In this paper we present another new ellipse fitting algorithm. Our algorithm if mainly based on the steepest descent procedure with the view of ensuring the convergence of the corresponding quadratic function Q(u) to a local minimum. Numerical examples are given.

Bifurcations of non-semi-simple eigenvalues and the zero-order approximations of responses at critical points of Hopf bifurcation in nonlinear systems

  • This paper deals with the bifurcations of non-semi-simple eigenvalues at critical point of Hopf bifurcation to understand the dynamic behavior of the system. By using the Puiseux expansion, the expression of the bifurcation of non-semi-simple eigenvalues and the corresponding topological structure in the parameter space are obtained. The zero-order approximate solutions in the vicinity of the critical points at which the multiple Hopf bifurcation may occur are developed. A numerical example, the flutter problem of an airfoil in simplified model, is given to illustrate the application of the proposed method.

Global Positioning of a Mobile Robot based on Color Omnidirectional Image Understanding (컬러 전방향 영상 이해에 기반한 이동 로봇의 위치 추정)

  • For the autonomy of a mobile robot it is first needed to know its position and orientation. Various methods of estimating the position of a robot have been developed. However, it is still difficult to localize the robot without any initial position or orientation. In this paper we present the method how to make the colored map and how to calculate the position and direction of a robot using the angle data of an omnidirectional image. The wall of the map is rendered with the corresponding color images and the color histograms of images and the coordinates of feature points are stored in the map. Then a mobile robot gets the color omnidirectional image at arbitrary position and orientation, segments it and recognizes objects by multiple color indexing. Using the information of recognized objects robot can have enough feature points and localize itself.

Delayed Dynamics of Prey-Predator System with Distinct Functional Responses

  • In this article, a mathematical model is proposed and analyzed to study the delayed dynamics of a system having a predator and two preys with distinct growth rates and functional responses. The equilibrium points of proposed system are determined and the local stability at each of the possible equilibrium points is investigated by its corresponding characteristic equation. The boundedness of the system is established in the absence of delay and the condition for existence of persistence in the system is determined. The discrete type gestational delay of predator is also incorporated on the system. Further it is proved that the system undergoes Hopf bifurcation using delay as bifurcation parameter. This study refers that time delay may have an impact on the stability of the system. Finally Computer simulations illustrate the dynamics of the system.

High accuracy online 3D-reconstruction by multiple cameras

  • For online high accurate reconstruction of an object from an visual information, a linear reconstruction method for multiple images is popular. Basically this method needs many cameras or many different screen shots from different view points. This method, however, has the benefit of less calculation and is adequate for a real time application by comparing other popular method. In this paper, online reconstruction system using more than three cameras is treated. An evaluation method of cameras' position, and of the number is derived for the linear reconstruction method. To decrease errors that are caused from skew of lens, positional error between corresponding points is taken into consideration on the evaluation. The proposed evaluation method enables estimation of the adequate number of cameras and then of feasible view locations. Additionally, repeating search of epipolar lines enables estimation of the hidden point. Comparing with result of an average error analysis, it was confirmed that the proposed methods works effectively.

A regulatory effect of Cervi Cornu Parvum aqua-acupuncture on serum estradiol level after ovariectomy (녹용약침(鹿茸藥鍼)이 난소절제(卵巢切除) 흰쥐의 혈청(血淸) estradiol 함량(含量)에 미치는영향(影響))

  • The effect of Cervi Cornu Parvum aqua-acupuncture on serum levels of sex hormone was investigated in ovariectomized rats. Water extract of Cervi Cornu Parvum was daily injected for 30 days at points in rats corresponding to bilateral Taixi (Ki. 3) points of human and non-point at root of tail after ovariectomy, respectively. Serum levels of estradiol, testosterone, progesterone, LH and FSH were measured at 2 and 4 weeks after aqua-acupuncture treatment, respectively. Compared with ovariectomized rats, significant increase of estradiol and progesterone and significant decrease of FSH and LH were elicited at 2 and 4 weeks after aqua-acupuncture treatment. Aqua-acupuncture treatment at non-point did not produce any remarkable effect. These findings suggest aqua-acupuncture may restore dysfunction of hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis, associated with a significant increase of serum estradiol level in ovariectomized rats.

  • This paper describes a new baseline wandering elimination algorithm for ECG based on waveform morphology analysis. The algorithm uses two slope tracing waves to separate the baseline wandering from ECG and approximates the separated baseline wandering to a corresponding sinusoid, and finally, subtracts the approximated sinusoid from the original ECG. The two slope tracing waves, the descending slope tracing wave and the ascending slope tracing wave, were developed for efficient determination of slope inverting points and sudden slope changing points. The algorithm has been applied to MIT/BIH database to verify its efficacy and validity in practical applications.

  • This paper describes a coordinate measuring technique based on optical triangulation using the two images. To overcome the defect of structured light system which measures coordinate point by point, light source is replaced by CCD camera. Pixels in CCD camera were considered as virtual light source. The overall geometry including two camera images is modeled. Using this geometry, the formula for calculating 3D coordinate of specified point is derived. In a word, the ray from a virtual light source was reflected on measuring point and the corresponding image point was made on the other image. Through the simulation result, validation of formula is verified. This method enables to acquire multiple points detection by photographing.

Characteristics of solutions in softening plasticity and path criterion

  • Characteristics of solutions of softening plasticity are discussed in this article. The localized and non-localized solutions are obtained for a three-bar truss and their stability is evaluated with the aid of the second-order work. Beyond the bifurcation point, the single stable loading path splits into several post-bifurcation paths and the second-order work exhibits several competing minima. Among the multiple post-bifurcation equilibrium states, the localized solutions correspond to the minimum points of the second-order work, while the non-localized solutions correspond to the saddles and local maximum points. To determine the real post-bifurcation path, it is proposed that the structure should follow the path corresponding to the absolute minimum point of the second-order work. The proposal is further proved equivalent to Bazant's path criterion derived on a thermodynamics basis.

  • The hodograph, which are usually defined as the derivative of parametric curve or surface, is useful far various geometric operations. It is known that the hodographs of Bezier curves and surfaces can be represented in the closed form. However, the counterparts of rational Bezier curves and surface have not been discussed yet. In this paper, the equations are derived, which are the closed form of rational Bezier curves and surfaces. The hodograph of rational Bezier curves of degree n can be represented in another rational Bezier curve of degree 2n. The hodograph of a rational Hazier surface of degree m×n with respect to a parameter can be also represented in rational Bezier surface of degree 2m×2n. The control points and corresponding weight of the hodographs are directly computed using the control points and weights of the given rational curves or surfaces.
