  • This study empirically investigates innovative behaviors of the firm. In so doing, a Probit was employed and estimated. We used the raw data of the "corporate innovation survey"(CIS), which, in consent with OECD efforts, is regularly undertaken by the Science and Technology Policy Institute(SIEPI). The data set includes more than 3400 firms in the manufacturing sector. Three types of innovation, i.e., new product, product improvement and process innovation, are studied, assuming that determinants of innovation are firm′s age. number of employees as the size of firm, ratio of foreign ownership and innovation costs. To investigate the relationship between firm′s innovation behavior and the size, we estimate the Probit including the quadratic term of the firm size. Empirical findings showed that the sign of the quadratic term of the firm size turned out to be negative. It means that the probability of firm's making innovation shows the inversed-U relationship with the firm size. Such an empirical result may have a significant implication for the industrial policy.

Second, technological innovation activities had no positive effect on technological innovation resistance, rejecting hypothesis 2. Third, technological innovation resistance had a positive effect on technological innovation performance, adopting hypothesis 3. Fourth, technological innovation resistance was positively mediated in the relationship between technological innovation competencies and technological innovation performance, adopting hypothesis 4. Fifth, technological innovation resistance was not positively mediated in the relationship between technological innovation activities and technological innovation performance, rejecting hypothesis 5. Overall, the higher technological innovation competencies had a significant effect on technological innovation resistance. Consequently, technological innovation resistance can improve or reduce technological innovation competencies and performance depending on the level of resistance.

  • Researches recently made in advanced countries into entrepreneurship found that various resources and information are mainly provided to ventures through social capital, which is a resource capital based on a network, and through corporate entrepreneurship. This research is an exploratory study on the effects of social capital and corporate entrepreneurship of new ventures upon their corporate performance, conducted from the standpoint of dynamic capability. For that purpose, a questionnaire investigation was made of 171 venture entrepreneurs in Korea, and the following are the results of an empirical analysis of responses to the questionnaire. First, it was found that social capital, which is a resource capital based on a network, had a significant effect on corporate entrepreneurship. Second, social capital also had a significant effect on ventures corporate performance. Third, corporate entrepreneurship had a significant effect on corporate performance. These results imply that social capital and corporate entrepreneurship have a significant effect on the corporate performance of ventures, which have innate disadvantages concerning the supply of resources. On the other hand, ventures, which encounter relatively more intense demands for change and renovation, can be managed in a sustainable manner just when they adequately accumulate their social capital and utilize their external resources and appropriately conduct their corporate entrepreneurship activities.

  • Managing uncertainty or discontinuity in an innovation is still a challenge to most companies. For sustainable corporate survival over the long term, one of the problems caused by discontinuous innovation is the innovator's dilemma. In specific, the dynamics between discontinuous innovation and incumbents inspires the interestof researchers and managers. This paper employs catastrophe theory as a theoretical basis to explain the driving force of new discontinuous change. In other words, we extract the control variables overcoming innovation dilemma by interpreting the dynamics of corporate strategy for discontinuous innovation from the perspective of catastrophe theory. First, we define four types of discontinuity such as technology discontinuity, product discontinuity, business discontinuity, and consumer preference discontinuity. Second, we analyze the dynamics of the competition between companies by interpreting the cases of discontinuous innovation. This analyzing process enables us to identify the control variable which can, in advance, respond to the discontinuous situation.

While the environmental deterministic viewpoint sees the external environment as having a significant impact on corporate performance. On the other hand, the resource-compliant viewpoint believes that it is important to obtain the necessary resources through appropriate decision-making in order to overcome the uncertainty of the environment.
