  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to test the sprinkler performance to protect the wall and ceiling joints of the sandwich panel warehouse in case of fire. Method: Based on the field surveys, test was setup and combustibles were prepared. The sprinkler discharge tests were performed at the corner of the wall and right under the sprinkler head. Results: It has been found that operation of the K-80 closed sprinkler head prevents the ignition of the sandwich panel and therefore no damage to the joints of sandwich panels. To prevent skipping phenomenon, it is necessary to install the sprinkler head from the corner of the wall and to keep a minimum distance of 2.4m and a maximum distance of 3m. Conclution: A Standard Operation Procedure should be prepared to suppress and rescue of fire brigade for a sandwich panel warehouse protected by perimeter sprinklers preventing a ignition of core materials and control fire.

  • In this study, the FE analysis has been presented for the leakage safety of $9\%$ nickel type LNG storage tank based on the thermal resistance effects between insulation panels, comer protection and prestressed concrete(PC) structures. The FEM calculated results show that the leakage safety of fiber glass blanket, perlite powder and cellular glass insulators does not guarantee any more due to a strength failure of the insulation structure. But the corner protection and PC structure of outer tank may delay or sustain the leaked LNG of 10 days even though the inner tank and insulation structure are simultaneously failed. This means that $9\%$ nickel steel type LNG storage tank may be safe because of a high strength of the corner protection and outer tank structures.

  • With the power of supercomputers increasing exponentially, there is an insatiable need for more advanced multi-disciplinary aerospace CFD simulations. A particular current interest is the 3D viscous turbulent simulation of the highly nonlinear aspects of aero-icing. The applications of CFD in that field are literally light-years behind aerodynamics, with a significant number of users still mired in correlations, or 2D, inviscid, incompressible, and, yes, Panel Methods simulations! Thus, the disparity of tools between aerodynamics and icing departments within an organization leads to a disconnect that makes ice protection a downstream isolated process that is not an integral part of the aerodynamic behavior of an aerospace system (aircraft, rotorcraft, jet engine, UAV, etc.). While 3D RANS has been recently introduced, it is still considered computationally too demanding for industry when wide parametric studies for certification are required. In addition, not unlike the situation in aerodynamics say 20 years ago, naysayers are at every corner claiming that CFD is not reliable and is of limited use.

  • In order to improve occupant protection in frontal crash, the IIHS introduced a small overlap frontal crash test in 2012. When the front corner of a car collides with another car or object, such as utility pole the test replicated the sequence of events. Because occupants move simultaneously forward and toward the side of the vehicle this test is challenging for some airbag and safety belt designs. In the small overlap frontal test, a car travels at 64 km/h toward a rigid barrier. A hybrid III dummy is positioned in the driver seat. 25% of the total width of the car strikes the barrier on the driver side. After review of small overlap frontal test protocol and overall rating, six run-throughs were performed according to the original test method.

  • The heat release rate (HRR) of fire for solid combustibles, consisting of multi-materials, was measured using the ISO 9705 room corner test, and a computational analysis was conducted to simulate the fire using an HRR prediction model that was provided by a fire dynamics simulator (FDS). As the solid combustible consisted of multi-materials, a cinema chair composed primarily of PU foam, PP, and steel was employed. The method for predicting the HRR provided by the FDS can be categorized into a simple model and a pyrolysis model. Because each model was applied and computational analysis was conducted under the same conditions, the HRR and fire growth rate predicted by the pyrolysis model had good agreement with the results obtained using the ISO 9705 room corner test.

  • Topological photonic nanocavities are considered to possess outstanding optical performance, and provide new platforms for realizing strong interaction between light and matter, due to their robustness to impurities and defects. Here hybrid plasmonic topological photonic nanocavities are proposed, by embedding various plasmon nanoantennas such as gold nanospheres, cylinders, and rectangles in a topological photonic crystal corner-state nanocavity. The maximum quality factor Q and minimum effective mode volume Veff of these hybrid nanocavities can reach the order of 104 and 10-4 (𝜆/n)3 respectively, and the high figures of merit Q/Veff for all of these hybrid nanocavites are stable and on the order of 105 (𝜆/n)-3. The relative positions of the plasmon nanoantennas will influence the coupling strength between the plasmon structures and the topological nanocavity. The hybrid nanocavity with gold nanospheres possesses much higher Q, but relatively large Veff. The presence of a gold rectangular structure can confine more electromagnetic energy within a smaller space, since its Veff is smallest, although Q is lowest among these structures. This work provides an outstanding platform for cavity quantum electrodynamics and has a wide range of applications in topological quantum light sources, such as single-photon sources and nanolasers.

  • We have developed new electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection devices with, bidirectional flip chip transient voltage suppression. The devices differ in their epitaxial (epi) layers, which were grown by reduced pressure chemical vapor deposition (RPCVD). Their ESD properties were characterized using current-voltage (I-V), capacitance-voltage (C-V) measurement, and ESD analysis, including IEC61000-4-2, surge, and transmission line pulse (TLP) methods. Two BD-FCTVS diodes consisting of either a thick (12 μm) or thin (6 μm), n-Si epi layer showed the same reverse voltage of 8 V, very small reverse current level, and symmetric I-V and C-V curves. The damage found near the corner of the metal pads indicates that the size and shape of the radius governs their failure modes. The BD-FCTVS device made with a thin n- epi layer showed better performance than that made with a thick one in terms of enhancement of the features of ESD robustness, reliability, and protection capability. Therefore, this works confirms that the optimization of device parameters in conjunction with the doping concentration and thickness of epi layers be used to achieve high performance ESD properties.

  • The attitude aerodynamic control is an important subject in the design of an aerospace plane. Usually, at high altitudes, this control is fulfilled by thrusters so that the implementation of an aerodynamic control of the vehicle has the advantage of reducing the amount of thrusters fuel to be loaded on board. In the present paper, the efficiency of a wing-flap has been evaluated considering a NACA 0010 airfoil with a trailing edge flap of length equal to 35% of the chord. Computational tests have been carried out in hypersonic, rarefied flow by a direct simulation Monte Carlo code at the altitudes of 65 and 85 km, in the range of angle of attack 0-40 deg. and with flap deflection equal to 0, 15 and 30 deg.. Effects of the flap deflection have been quantified by the variations of the aerodynamic force and of the longitudinal moment. The shock wave-boundary layer interaction and the shock wave-shock wave interaction have been also considered. A possible interaction of the leading edge shock wave and of the shock wave arising from the vertex of the convex corner, produced on the lower surface of the airfoil when the flap is deflected, generates a shock wave whose intensity is stronger than those of the two interacting shock waves. This produces a consistent increment of pressure and heat flux on the lower surface of the flap, where a thermal protection system is required.

  • This paper describes on the development of Passive-type Radar Reflector for Fisheries (PRR-F) based on the newly revised 2000 SOLAS regulations. The purpose of PRR-F is to provide it as the protection devices of a fishing net and a fishing field. The PRR-F is composed of corner cluster bundle of light galvanized iron, and it is inserted into floating styrofoam. Performance tests for the PRR-F are carried out in an anechoic chamber. The test results show that the reflected radar signal from PRR-F is large enough for the purpose.
