  • In this paper, we present early processing techniques for visual inspection of metallic parts. Since metallic surfaces give rise to specular reflections, it is difficult to extract object boundaries using elementary segmentation techniques such as edge detection or binary thresholding. In this paper, we present two techniques for finding object boundaries on micro bit images. First, we explain a technique for detecting blade boundaries using a directional correlation mask. Second, a line and angle extraction technique based on Harris corner detector and Hough transform is described. These techniques have been effective for detecting blade boundaries, and a number of experimental results are presented using real images.

  • A review was made of fatigue failures of nuclear power plant components in Japan, which were experienced in service and during periodical inspection. No case has been recently reported of a service fatigue failure of a reactor pressure vessel itself, excluding nozzle corner cracks, that occurred many years ago. But, service fatigue failures have been occasionally experienced in piping systems, pumps, and valves, on which fatigue design seems to have been inadequately applied. The causes of fatigue failures can be divided into two categories: mechanical-vibration-induced fatigue and thermal-fluctuation-induced fatigue. Vibration-induced fatigue failure occurs more frequently than is generally thought. The lesson gleaned from the present survey is a recognition that a service fatigue failure may occur due to any one or a combination of the following factors: (1) lack of communication between designers and fabrication engineers, (2) lack of knowledge about a possibility of fatigue failure and poor consideration about the effects of residual stresses, (3) lack of consideration on possible vibration in the design and fabrication stages, and (4) lack of fusion or poor penetration in a welded joint.

  • The existing underground trenchless methods use reinforcing rod in steel tube to obtain structural stiffness. However, there are some problems such as inconvenience of work and expensive material fee which are resulted from limited working space and reinforcing work. To resolve these problems, a new trenchless method, namely P.S.T method (Prestressed Segment Tunnel Method), is developed which uses joint to connect the steel segment and form erection structure in underground construction. Further, installing strands for prestressing. In order to evaluate the flexural capacity of the P.S.T method structure, experiment was conducted. The parameters considered in the experiment are the span-to-depth ratio, diameter of steel tube at corner, prestressing force and welding of joint. Altogether examining the flexural behavior, the effect of deflection in structure according to different parameters has also been analysised.

  • For Korean design provisions are not equipped for skewed steel box girder bridges, when American provisions are adopted, load distribution factors different from real behavior are determinated. Furthermore the possibility of over or under estimated bridge design involves. The aim of this study is to provide more rational load distribution factor formulas based on real behavior for shear at obtuse corner of skewed steel box girder bridges. In order to accomplish the aim finite element analysis for a variety of skewed steel box girder bridge structural models is carried out, and each parameters degree of influence on wheel load distribution factors of skewed steel box girder bridges are analyzed. Then multiple regression analysis is fulfilled in order to propose formulas for determinating shear force load distribution factor of skewed steel box girder bridges.

  • The present study aimed to examine the effectiveness of different techniques for controlling the diagonal cracks at the corners of openings on the strength, deformation, and crack propagation in reinforced concrete walls. The crack control strip proposed in this study, the conventional diagonal steel reinforcing bars, and stress-dispersion curved plates were investigated for controlling the diagonal cracks at the opening corners. An additional crack self-healing function was also considered for the crack control strip. To evaluate the volume change ratio and crack width propagation around the opening, downsized wall specimens with a opening were tested under the diagonal shear force at the opening corner. Test result showed that the proposed crack control strip was more effective in reducing the volume change and controlling the crack width around the opening when compared to the conventional previous methods. The crack control strip with crack healing feature displayed the superior performance in improving the strength of the wall and reducing the crack width while healing cracks occurred in the previous tests.

  • In this paper, we propose a method for accurately and rapidly detecting defects in wire harnesses by utilizing computer vision to calculate six crucial measurement values: the length of crimped terminals, the dimensions (width) of terminal ends, and the width of crimped sections (wire and core portions). We employ Harris corner detection to locate object positions from two types of data. Additionally, we generate reference points for extracting measurement values by utilizing features specific to each measurement area and exploiting the contrast in shading between the background and objects, thus reflecting the slope of each sample. Subsequently, we introduce a method using the Euclidean distance and correction coefficients to predict values, allowing for the prediction of measurements regardless of changes in the wire's position. We achieve high accuracy for each measurement type, 99.1%, 98.7%, 92.6%, 92.5%, 99.9%, and 99.7%, achieving outstanding overall average accuracy of 97% across all measurements. This inspection method not only addresses the limitations of conventional visual inspections but also yields excellent results with a small amount of data. Moreover, relying solely on image processing, it is expected to be more cost-effective and applicable with less data compared to deep learning methods.

  • Video images captured by vehicle cameras often contain blurry or dithering frames due to inadvertent motion from bumps in the road or by insufficient illumination during the morning or evening, which greatly reduces the perception of objects expression and recognition from the records. Therefore, a real-time electronic stabilization method to correct fuzzy video from driving recorders has been proposed. In the first stage of feature detection, a coarse-to-fine inspection policy and a scale nonlinear diffusion filter are proposed to provide more accurate keypoints. Second, a new antiblurry binary descriptor and a feature point selection strategy for unintentional estimation are proposed, which brought more discriminative power. In addition, a new evaluation criterion for affine region detectors is presented based on the percentage interval of repeatability. The experiments show that the proposed method exhibits improvement in detecting blurry corner points. Moreover, it improves the performance of the algorithm and guarantees high processing speed at the same time.

  • This study deals with the strengthening effect and behavioral characteristics of square concrete column wrapped with carbon FRP sheet. The increase in axial compression capacity comes from the confinement effect of wrapped CFRP sheet. Because of the shape of square concrete column, the confinement effect is smaller than that in circular column. For the experimental program, four parameters including the number of sheet, the size of column specimen, the aspect ratio, the corner rounding, and the transformation in shape from square to circular were selected to examine the strengthening effect and behavioral characteristics for each parameter. Experimental program comprised fifty five square concrete column specimens for different eleven types. The compression test results confirmed that the strengthening effect can be increased by the confinement of wrapped and bonded CFRP sheet. However, the confining effect was decreased with the increase of square column size. The other hand, the ductility in square concrete column greatly increased due to caging effect of CFRP sheet. The transformation in shape from square to circular considerably increased both the compressive strength and the ductility of the concrete column wrapped with CFRP sheet. In addition, using test results and existing studies, accuracy and reliability of the existing strength models for CFRP-confined square concrete are verified.

  • Bilateral convergent strabismus with exophthalmus(BCSE) is an eye disorder affecting many cattle breeds worldwide. BCSE is the most common in cattle at various types of strabismus. Divergent strabismus is of relatively low incidence than convergent strabismus. This report is the to shown a case of convergent and divergent strabismus with unilateral in the exophthalmus in a heifer Holstein cow. A female Holstein calf born with congenital progressive divergent strabismus in right eye and convergent strabismus in left eye was tested. Ocular and blood examination, and activity were checked from the first week, 8 month, and 16 month after birth. The ocular examination includes general inspection, fixation reflex and menace response. The general inspection is checking the degree of deviation of both eyes from the normal visual axis, which was determined by the amount of sclera permanently visible in the temporal corner of the eye. The stage is divided into 4 stages depending on the degree of deviation. The right eye shown in stage 4 continues after birth and the left eye shown stage 2, stage 3 and stage 4 at 1 week, 8 month and 16 month after birth, respectively. In fixation reflex and Menace response, both eye balls showed a normal response at 1 week, 8 month and 16 month after birth. Blood count and serum chemistry test were performed, but a specific factor was not detected outside the reference range.
