  • For the accurate prediction of freezing time, probably the most difficult factor to measure and major error source is the surface heat transfer coefficient. In this work, surface heat transfer coefficient were determined for still air freezing and immersion freezing methods by theory of the transient temperature method and confirmed by using a modification of plank's equation to predict the freezing time of ground lean beef. The results showed the cooling rate of immersion freezing was about 11 times faster than that of still air freezing method. A comparison of surface heat transfer coefficient of copper plate and ground lean beef resulted an difference of 25-30% because the food sample surface is not smooth as copper plate. Also, when h-values measured by ground lean beef were applicated to modified model, the accuracy of its results is very high as difference of about 8%.

  • In order to investigate a practical application of the fibrous adsorbent to heavy metal ions, acrylic fibers were treated with the hydroxylamine solution that was producted by hydroxylamine hydrochloride and potasium hydroxide in a condition of strong alkaline and $70^{\circ}C$. The adsorption mechanism of copper(2) ion on the fibrous adsorbent, that is hydroxylaminated acrylic fibers, was studied. The adsorption of copper(2) ion was explained in terms of the activated adsorption that are formed the complex with the ligand, such as C=N, N-H, NHOH, on the surface of the adsorbent. The activation energy was evaluated to be 3.8 Kcal/mol. and the times of adsorption equilibrium was approximately 10 minutes. The uptake of copper(2) ion was found to be effected with the increase of temperatures and the pH dependence.

  • Material exposure experiments were performed to evaluate the relationship between air pollution and material corrosion rates based on collaboration with researchers in China, Japan, and Korea. Qualitative and quantitative atmospheric corrosion was estimated from damage caused to bronze, copper, steel, marble, cedar, cypress, and lacquer plates exposed to outdoor and indoor conditions in certain East Asian cities. The effects of atmospheric and meteorological factors on the damage to the copper plates and marble pieces were estimated using a regression analysis. The results indicated that sulfur dioxide produced the most destruction of the materials, especially in South Korea and China. In Japan, the copper plates were damaged as a result of natural conditions and sea salt. Copper was also found to be damaged by the surface deposition of sulfur and chlorine. Meanwhile, marble was substantially degraded by gaseous sulfur dioxide, yet sulfate ions in rain had no effect. Accordingly, the analysis of air pollution from the perspective of material damage was determined to be very useful in evaluating and substantiating the intensity of air pollution in East Asia.

  • Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis(ESCA) allowes the determination of the elemental composition and the bonding state of the surface atomes in the interface between two materials. In the binding energies of ESCA spectrum, there are zero error, voltage scaling error and random error. Accurate analysis of the intensity energy response functions and accurate calibration of the energy scale are essential to use X-ray photoelectron spectron meter. At the results of the calibration of the ESCA spectra in the copper and cordierite (Mg2Al4Si5kO18) interfaces, the errors relative to the copper are -3.03 eV for the zero error -z,-197 ppm for the voltage scaling error -V and 6.9 meV for the random error -R. The method of the calibration is able to apply for the binding energy calibration of the another ESCA spectra.

  • Carbon nanofiber/Cu composite powder has been fabricated by electroless plating process. Microstructural evolution of the composite powder after heat treatment under vacuum, hydrogen and air environment was investigated. A dispersed carbon nanofiber coated by copper was produced at the as-plated condition. Carbon nanofiber is coated uniformly and densely with the plate shaped copper particles. The copper plates on the carbon nanofiber aggregate during the thermal exposure at elevated temperature in vacuum and hydrogen in order to reduce surface energy. The thermal exposure of the composite powder in air at $400^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours leads to the spherodization of the composite powder owing to oxidation of copper.

  • To reveal localized plastic deformation zones in a tough pitch copper, the etching characteristics of a copper sample have been examined. The etching was carried out on a sample surface using an etchant consisting of 25 ml nitric acid solution and 75 ml water. To clarify the plastic deformation zone, the sample deformed plastically was heated to between $250^{\circ}C$ and $300^{\circ}C$ before the etching process. This is due to a change of the microstructure and crystal orientation in the plastic deformation zone producing recrystallized small grains. In this case, the plastically deformed zone is severely etched, whereas the undeformed zone is only slightly etched. Identification of the details of the deformation zone from the etching is further discussed.

  • To study the effect of the bleaching agents in detergents on the degradation of cotton fabrics, the carboxyl contents, copper numbers, degree of polymerization, the change of tensile strengths and fiber surfaces of cotton fabric before and after washing were examined. The results obtained were as follows: As the cycles and temperature of washing increased, the carboxyl content of washed cotton fabric changed little but the copper unmber of cotton fabric was increased. At 6$0^{\circ}C$ , 8$0^{\circ}C$ the copper number of cotton fabric washed with soidum perborate (PB) was higher than that of with sodium percarbonate (PC). The degree of polymeriazation and tensile strength of cotton fabric were decreased and at higher temperature those were more decreased but were less decreased when tetraacetyehylenediamine (TAED) was added. The degree of polymerization had negative relation with copper unmber but with tensile strength of cotton fabric had positive relation. Cotton fiber surface was more degraded by bleaching agents and hydrogen peroxide exhaustion was increased as the temperature of washing increased. And hydrogen peroxide exhaustion had negative relation with the degree of polymerization.

  • Concentric annular heat pipes having the length of 200 mm and the outside diameter of 25.4 mm were manufactured and tested. The inside diameters of the heat pipes were 11.3 mm and 8.1 mm and the material of the container was copper. To compare with thermal performances between the concentric annular heat pipe and a copper block with same shape, start-up and isothermal performance were tested. In the result, the start-up of the concentric annular heat pipe was influenced by the start-up of their heat source. The concentric annular heat pipe reached at steady state faster then the same shape of copper block. The maximum wall temperature difference of the concentric annular heat pipe on whole surface was $4.6^{\circ}C$, and the case of the copper block was $16.5^{\circ}C$.

  • Laser direct writing of micro-patterned copper lines has been achieved by pyrolytic decomposition of copper formate films (Cu(HCOO)$_2$$.$4H$_2$O), as a precursor, using a focused Ar$\^$+/ laser beam ($\lambda$= 514 nm) on PCB boards and glass substrates. The linewidth and thickness of the lines were investigated as a function of laser power and scan speed. The profiles of the lines were measured by scanning electron microscope (SEM), surface profiler (${\alpha}$-step) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The electrical resistivities of the patterned lines were also investigated as a function of laser parameter using probe station and semiconductor analyzer. we compared resistivities of the patterned lines with that of the Cu bulk, respectively.

  • We report the microwave reflection coefficient $S_{11}$ of copper(II)-phthalocyanine(CuPc) using a near-field microwave microscope(NSMM) in order to understand the intrinsic electromagnetic properties of organic materials. For a NSMM system, a high-quility microstip resonator coupled with a dielectric resonator was used. The reflection coefficient $S_{11}$ was changed by the preparation conditions of CuPc thin films. We compared the reflection coefficient with crystal phase, surface morphology, UV absorption spectra and x-ray diffraction results.
