  • The characteristics of cyanide decomposition in aqueous phase by hydrogen peroxide have been explored in an effort to develop a process to recycle waste water. The self-decomposition of $H_2O$$_2$at pH 10 or below was minimal even in 90 min., with keeping about 90% of $H_2O$$_2$undissociated. On the contrary, at pH 12 only 9% of it remained during the same time. In the presence of copper catalyst at 5 g Cu/L, complete decomposition of $H_2$O$_2$was accomplished at pH 12 even in a shorter time of 40 min. The volatility of free cyanide was decisively dependent on the solution pH: the majority of free cyanide was volatilized at pH 8 or below, however, only 10% of it was volatilized at pH 10 or above. In non-catalytic cyanide decomposition, the free cyanide removal was incomplete in 300 min. even in an excessive addition of $H_2$$O_2$at a $H_2$$O_2$/CN molar ratio of 4, with leaving behind about 8% of free cyanide. On the other hand, in the presence of copper catalyst at a Cu/CN molar ratio of 0.2, the free cyanide was mostly decomposed in only 16 min. at a reducedH202/CN molar ratio of 2. Ihe efnciency of HBO2 in cyanide decomposition decreased with increasing addition of H2O2 since the seu-decomposition rate of $H_2$$O_2$increased. At the optimum $H_2$$O_2$/mo1ar ratio 0.2 of and Cu/CN molar ratio of 0.05, the free cyanide could be completely decomposed in 70 min., having a self-decomposition rate of 22 mM/min and a H$_2$$O_2$ efficiency of 57%.

  • In environmental friendly aspects, the synthesis of glycerol carbonate from glycerol using carbon monoxide and oxygen gases which were produced in petrochemical plants was studied. The oxidative carbonylation of glycerol under batch reaction system was performed on parameter conditions such as effect of various metals (Cu, Pd, Fe, Sn, Zn, Cr), oxidizing agents, mole ratio of carbon monoxide to oxygen, catalyst amount, solvent types, reaction temperature and time and dehydrating agents. In particular copper chloride catalysts showed the excellent activities, and the glycerol carbonate yields over CuCl and $CuCl_2$ catalysts were the maximum of 44% and 64%, respectively at the following reaction conditions: solvent as nitrobenzene, mole ratio of 1:3:0.15 (glycerol:carbon monoxide:catalyst), mole ratio of 2:1 (carbon monoxide:oxygen), the total pressure of 30 bar at 413 K for 4 hr. It was found that reactivity were significantly different depending on the oxidation number of Cu catalysts, and oxygen plays an important role as oxidizing agents in producing H2O during oxidation reaction after carbonylation of glycerol.

  • Three way catalyst has been used extensively for the exhaust gas treatment for the internal combustion gasoline engine. While, numerous research efforts have been directed to develop various technologies for the abatement of exhaust gas from diesel engine. Diesel engine operating under lean condition produces large amount of NOx and the corresponding catalytic technology employing vanadium supported titania using ammonia has been commercialized for heavy duty vehicle. Recently, the Cu catalyst supported on zeolite has been investigated for NOx abatement using ammonia because of its critical importance for ultra low emission vehicle. The current review shows the recent trend in research and development for zeolite based copper catalysts, which are mainly used as catalysts for selective catalytic reduction using ammonia, are one of the aftertreatment technologies for effectively removing nitrogen oxides from diesel exhaust.

  • Catalytic combustion of benzene over CuO-$CeO_2$ mixed oxides prepared by co-precipitation method were investigated. The CuO-$CeO_2$ mixed oxides were also prepared using different precipitant and CuO precursor. They were characterized by XRD, BET, XPS and $H_2-TPR$. In the CuO-$CeO_2$ catalysts, characteristic copper oxide peaks were shown at $2{\Theta}=35.5^{\circ}$ and $38.5^{\circ}$ regardless of the precipitant. The Cu0.35 catalyst prepared using $NH_4OH$ as a precipitant revealed the highest activity on the combustion of benzene. In addition, the pretreatment with hydrogen enhanced the catalytic activity and the catalyst reduced at $400^{\circ}C$ showed the highest activity on the combustion of benzene.

  • Highly crystalline Cu-ZSM5 was prepared without using organic templates. Several ion exchange treatments between Na$\^$+/ and Cu$\^$2+/ brought about excess loading of copper ions on the ZSM5 zeolite and the resultant zeolite was active for the decomposition of NO. This indicates that the copper ions excessively loaded on the ZSM5 zeolite are effective for the NO decomposition. When oxygen was added to a reactants, the conversion of NO decreased. NO, O$_2$TPD experiments explained that the active sites for NO decomposition and the adsorption sites of O$_2$, were the same. O$_2$, at the surface of ZSM5 zeolite was desorbed incompletely after pretreatment at 500$^{\circ}C$, and CU-ZSM5 pretreated with H$_2$at 500$^{\circ}C$ showed promoted activity at the start of reaction. Thus, it seems clear that O$_2$, adsorbed ai the surface of catalyst inhibits the catalytic activity.

  • Toluene, which is emitted from textile process, is considered as an important hazardous air pollutant. In this study, the catalytic activity of transition metal oxides(Cu, Mn, V, Cr, Co, Ni, Ce, Sn, Fe, Sr, Cs, Mo, La, W, Zn)/${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ catalysts was investigated to carry out the complete oxidation of toluene. The metal catalysts were characterized by XRD-ray diffraction), FE-SEM(Field Emission Scanning Electron Micrograph), BET(Brunauer Emmett Teller) method and TPR(Temperature Programmed Reduction). Among the catalysts, Cu/${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ was highly promising catalyst for the oxidation of toluene. From the BET results, it seems that the catalytic activity is not correlated to the specific surface area. XRD results indicated that most of catalysts exist as amorphous phase. From the FE-SEM results, it was observed that copper on ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ surface was well dispersed among catalysts. The catalytic activity for the toluene oxidation could be explained with that metal oxide catalyst was dispersed well over supports and was attributed to reduction activity in surface of catalysts.

  • A new synthetic method of 2,5-disubstituted pyrrolidines is developed by the cyclization of unsaturated N-benzoyloxysulfonamides by $(CuOTf)_2{\cdot}C_6H_6$ in refluxing dichloroethane. Various N-4- and N-5-alkenyl and alkynyl N-benzoyloxysulfonamides are cyclized to give pyrrolidines. The cyclization proceeds via addition of sulfonamidoyl radicals to intramolecular unsaturated bonds or allylic hydrogen abstraction with the radical intermediates.

  • The activities of Au-modified Cu electrodes toward glucose oxidation are evaluated according to their fabrication conditions and physico-chemical properties. The Au-modified Cu electrodes are fabricated by the galvanic displacement of Au on a Cu substrate and the characteristics of the Au particles are controlled by adjusting the displacement time. From the glucose oxidation tests, it is found that the Au modified Cu has superior activity to the pure Au or Cu film, which is evidenced by the negative shift in the oxidation potential and enhanced current density during the electrochemical oxidation. Though the activity of the Au nanoparticles is a contributing factor, the enhanced activity of the Au-modified Cu electrode is due to the increased oxidation number of Cu through the electron transfer from Cu to more electronegative Au. The depletion of electron in Cu facilitates the oxidation of glucose. The stability of the Au-modified Cu electrode was also studied by chronoamperometry.

  • Photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells can convert solar energy, the largest potential source of renewable energy, into hydrogen fuel which can be stored, transported, and used on demand. In terms of cost competitiveness compared with fossil fuels, however, both photocatalytic efficiency and cost-effectiveness must be achieved simultaneously. Improvement of cost-effective, scalable, versatile, and eco-friendly fabrication methods has emerged as an urgent mission for PEC cells, and solution-based fabrication methods could be capable of meeting these demands. Herein, we review recent challenges for various nanostructured oxide photoelectrodes fabricated by solution-based processes. Hematite, tungsten oxide, bismuth vanadate, titanium oxide, and copper oxides are the main oxides focused on, and various strategies have been attempted with respect to these photocatalyst materials. The effects of nanostructuring, heterojunctions, and co-catalyst loading on the surface are discussed. Our review introduces notable solution-based processes for water splitting photoelectrodes and gives an outlook on eco-friendly and cost-effective approaches to solar fuel generation and innovative artificial photosynthesis technologies.

  • Reusing of electroless Ni-Cu-P waste solution was investigated in the plating time, plating rate, solution composion and deposit. Plating time of nickel-catalytic surface took longer than that of zincated-catalytic surface. Initial solution with 50f) waste solution additive at batch type was possible to reusing of waste solution. Plating time of initial solution at continuous type took longer 10 times over than that of batch type. Plating time of 50% waste solution additive at continuous type took longer 3.7 times over than that of batch type. Component change of nickel-copper for electroless deposition was greatly affected by depolited inferiority and larger decreased plating rate.
