The purposes of this study were firstly to investigate how the conflict-coping methods of husbands and wives relate to their cognition of their own conflict-coping methods and those of their spouse and secondly to investigate how the interaction patterns of the conflict-coping methods between husbands and wives affect their marital satisfaction in the early stage of marital life. The main findings of this study were as follows: Firstly, this study indicated that both husbands and wives recognized that they themselves use the more reasonable conflict-coping method than their spouse. Both thought that husbands use the more avoidant, conflict-coping method than wives. Secondly, the study showed that both husbands and wives are tend to use the same conflict-coping method as their spouse's conflict-coping method as perceived by them. All the conflict-coping methods of husbands were related to their perception of their wives' conflict-coping methods. In the can of wives, however, there was no significant correlation between their aggressive conflict-coping method and the husbands' avoidant conflict-coping method, or between their avoidant conflict-coping method and the husbands' reasonable conflict-coping method. These results indicated a gender-difference in the conflict-coping methods between husbands and wives. Thirdly, the study showed that when husbands and wives regarded the interaction pattern of the conflict-coping method between themselves and their spouse as the reasonable$\ast$reasonable pattern, both of them had the highest marital satisfaction. When husbands regarded the interaction pattern of the conflict-coping method as the aggressive$\ast$aggressive pattern, they had the lowest marital satisfaction. On the other hand, when wives regarded the interaction pattern of the conflict-coping method as the aggressive$\ast$avoidant pattern, they had the lowest marital satisfaction.
Objectives : The purpose of the study was to investigate the effective coping management of stress towards self-efficacy in students of dental hygiene department. Methods : A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by the students of dental hygiene department in Daegu from April to May, 2013. Descriptive statistics and frequency analysis, t-test, ANOVA and correlation analysis were analyzed using SAS (version 9.2) for statistics. Results : The overall stress coping score was 2.54. Problem-focused coping was 2.50, and social support-seeking coping was 2.60 in active coping. Emotional coping was 2.29, and hopeful thinking coping was 2.76 in passive coping. The level of self-efficacy according to general characteristics varied significantly depending on grade, satisfaction with major, subjective health status and smoking status. The stress coping methods according to general characteristics varied significantly depending on academic achievement and satisfaction with major. The results showed that the level of self-efficacy was associated with stress-coping methods. Conclusions : Self-efficacy of students of dental hygiene department was associated with stress coping methods. It is necessary to develop the programs for stress coping to increase self-efficacy.
Purpose: This study aims to comprehensively analyze what small business owners experience in relation to stressors, consequences, coping methods, and situational factors. Research design, data and methodology: In this study, qualitative research methodology was used to conduct in-depth interviews with 15 small business owners who started franchise convenience stores, and classify stressors and consequences, coping methods, and situational factors based on the transactional theory of stress. Results: The results of this study are as follows. First, stressors were classified into challenge stressor and hindrance stressor. Second, stress coping methods were classified into problem-focused and emotion-focused coping methods. Among them, SBOs mainly used problem-focused coping methods. Third, consequences were classified into physiological, emotional, and behavioral tension. Lastly, the moderating factorsin the process of stress coping were resilience, social support, and positive traits. Conclusion: Theoretically, the stressors and coping methods that small business owners experience during the start-up process were confirmed from an integrated theoretical perspective. Practically, building trust relationships with SBOs and providing realistic job introductions are required at the head office level, and on the individual side, efforts are required to strike an appropriate balance between behavioral and emotional stress coping and to form a consensus with family members.
Cancer has been considered a life-threatening disease and coping patterns could have a strong impact the physical and psychological health of patients and their family. The purpose of this study was to identify the change of coping patterns according to the phases of illness in the patients with cancer and their family caregivers and to compare the coping patterns of patients with those of their caregivers. The phases of illness consisted of 1st(initial) stage, 2nd(metastatic or recurred) stage and 3rd (terminal) stage based on literature. The coping methods were measured using the modified Ways of Coping Questionnaire by Lazarus & Folkman(1984). Seventy-nine patients(35 in stage 1, 31 in stage 2, and 13 in stage 3) and ninety-two caregivers (38 in stage 1, 30 in stage 2 and 24) agreed to participate from two general hospitals in Seoul and Choongnam. No significant changes were found in the coping patterns according to the phases of illness in both groups. Patients in stage 2 and caregivers in stages 2 and 3 problem-focused coping methods were significantly used more than emotion-focused coping methods. Patients in stage 1 significantly used two coping strategies that were cognitive reconstruction and emotion expression more than caregivers. Patients in stage 2 significantly used emotion-focused coping methods including minimizing threat, blame, and emotion expression excepting wishful thinking more than caregivers. We need more research to identify the relationship between the coping methods and their efficiencies through longterm observation and attempt to develope the nursing interventions that could have an improvement on positive coping methods and provide guidance on the problems the patients experience.
Purpose: This study is designed to examine the effect of self-efficacy on stress-coping methods of health related and non-health related department college students. Method: A questionnaire survey was conducted on 533 students (268 health department and 265 non-health department) of health department and non-health department students at 1 university and 2 university in Gyeonggi-do, jeollabuk-do and jeollanam-do. Results: The results were statistically analyzed using SPSS 12.0, which made no statistically-significant difference among health and non-health students. The study on the effect of self-efficacy on stress-coping methods has revealed that both health and non-health department students showed statistically-significant positive correlation between self-efficacy and emotion-centered coping methods. Also, Social efficacy had negative correlation with social-supported coping methods. While non-health department students had statistically-significant positive correlation between self-efficacy and wishful coping. Conclusion: Accordingly, it has been revealed that self-efficacy is effective in stress-coping methods.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship among subjective symptoms, depression, and stress coping behavior of university students. Method: The survey was carried out on a convenience sample of 298 university students. The questionnaire consisted of each scale for symptoms, depression, and stress coping behaviors. Data analysis procedure included the factor analysis for stress coping behaviors, and the correlation analysis describing a relationship among symptoms, depression, and stress coping behaviors. Result: There were significant correlations between depression and the three types of symptoms: general, psychological, and somatic symptom. Subjects using the negative-emotional-response coping and the self-control coping showed a more severe depression, and those using the problem-solvingㆍreappraisal coping and the positive-emotional-response coping showed a milder depression. Subjects using the negative-emotional-response coping complained of all 3 types of symptoms severely, and those using the positive-emotional-response coping complained of general symptoms mildly. Of five stress coping methods, the negative-emotional-response and the positive-emotional-response coping methods were related to both symptoms and depression significantly. Conclusion: This study suggests that the emotional-oriented coping method has more important role for university student’s depression and their subjective symptoms than the problem-oriented coping or social supports seeking coping. Further study needs to be conducted to help students effective coping mechanism for good mental health. Also it is necessary for university students to recognize that their symptoms are associated with depression.
This study was investigated the perceived level of stress and the coping method which the adolescent were confronting. The subject of this investigation was high school students who resided in the City of Pusan. Life Event Scale and Coping Methods Scale were used as the methods for examination. The data were analyzed using M, SD, t-test one-way ANOVA scheffe-test and Pearson's correlation related with this study problem were tested. The results of this study are as follows: 1. The perceived level of teenager's stress was little low with M=1.65 When dividing sphere of perceived level the stress by school problem was the highest and the circumstance problem personal one family one and a companion one are followed in regular sequence. 2. It was found that degree of stress made a difference according to the sex course grade school year religion parents's presence or absence SES the satisfactory degree of school life the satisfactory degree of school life the satisfactory degree of home life and the rearing attitude of parents. 3. As the coping score of teenager's stress was M=2.54. The short-term coping method was higher compared with the long-term one regarding coping methods. 4. It was found that the coping method of stress differed from each other according to variables of sex school year the satisfactory degree of school life and the satisfactory degree of home life. 5. It was found that the perceived level of stress had negative correlation with the coping method and especially long-term coping method had higher negative correlation.
Purpose: This study was carried out to identify premenstrual discomforts and coping patterns and their effects. Method: The participants of this study were 297 female university students in C area. The Menstrual Discomfort Questionaire (MDQ) and coping method lists were used as measurement tools. Results: There were significant differences premenstrual discomforts according to age (F=5.76, p=.003) and according to health condition (F=3.43, p=.034). The mean scores of the sub-categorical factors of premenstrual discomfort were 2.35 points for pain, 2.29 for instability and 2.25 for water retention. The worst symptoms among the subcategories of premenstrual discomfort were as follows: backache (M=2.68) in the pain subcategory, irritability (M=2.53) in the instability subcategory and swelling(M=2.40) in the water retention subcategory. Their common coping patterns were 'coping according to menstrual period', 'active behavioral coping' and 'evasional coping'. Frequently used coping methods were 'taking a rest and sleep (99.3%)' and 'taking a warm shower (86.2%)'. Effective coping methods were 'taking a rest and sleep (89.5%)' and 'taking a warm shower (87.1%)'. Conclusion: Most participants have their own coping pattern. Some methods were very effective to PMS but some were not effective to PMS. To manage PMS, effective coping methods should be encouraged for female university students. To keep up with effective coping, education and counseling should be continued. It is considered necessary to make the same research with a larger number of samples and more specified assessment.
This study on stressful life events and coping methods of medical patients and community people was applied to people who was divided into two groups from July 19 to Aug. 7, 1982, One is hospitalized patients in medical wards of two university hospitals in Seoul. The other is inhibitants in eight Dongs of Seoul. This study compared the number and seversity of stressful life events reported by medical patients and community people within last six months, identified coping methods used by the two groups and explored the relationship between stressful life events and coping methods. Two instruments are used in this study. The first one to measure stressful life events, is Holmes & Rahe(1967)'s S.R.R.S.(Soual Readjustment Rating Scale), which is translated & amended, So that it consists of 51 items. The second one is for evaluating coping method. It consists of 36 items amended through preliminary test after consideration of related literature review and survey on the basis of Bell(1877)’s‘18-item-Questionnaire.’The materials were analyzed by S.P.S.S. (Statistical Package for the Social Science) program. The results of analysis were as follows: 1. There were no significant difference in the number and severity of stressful life events reported by medical patients and community people (p>.05). 2. There were no significant difference in use of coping methods (p>.05). 3. Stressful life events showed a positive correlation with coping methods (r=.363).
