Microcellular foam processing of polymers requires a nucleated cell density greater than $10^9\;cells/cm^3$ so that the fully grown cells are smaller than 10 mm. A microcellular foam can be developed by first saturating a polymer sample with a volatile blowing agent, followed by rapidly decreasing its solubility in the polymer. In general, the cellular structure of crystalline polymer foams is difficult to control, compared to that of amorphous polymer foams. Since the gas does not dissolved in the crystallites, the polymer/gas solution formed during the microcellular processing is nonuniform. Moreover, the bubble nucleation is nonhomogeneous because of the heterogeneous nature of the crystalline polymer. In this paper, the effects of the crystallinity and morphology of crystalline polymers on the microcellular foam processing and on reflectivity of products are investigated. First, polymer specimens with various morphology and amount of solved blowing agent were prepared by varying the saturation pressure, saturation time and foaming condition. Then, cell morphologies according to several conditions were studied. The specimens with differing gas amount of solved and morphologies were foamed and their cellular structures were compared. The experimental results of reflectivity are compared to raw specimen and another specimen of different experimental conditions. After the experiments, recognize whether how reflectivity changes according to solved gas amount. And the effect of cell density and cell size on reflectivity is studied
We present experimental results that regard the effects of catalyst preparation on the structural and field-emissive properties of CNTs. The CNTs used in this research have been synthesized using the inductively coupled plasma-chemical vapor deposition (ICP-CVD) method. Catalyst materials (such as Ni, Co, and Invar 426) are varied and deposited on buffer films by RF magnetron sputtering. Prior to growth of CNTs, $NH_3$ plasma etching has also been performed with varying plasma etching time and power. For all the CNTs grown, nanostructures and morphologies are analyzed using Raman spectroscopy and FESEM, in terms of buffer films, catalyst materials, and pre-treatment conditions. Furthermore, the field electron-emission of CNTs are measured and characterized in terms of the catalyst preparation environments. The CNTs grown on Nicatalyst layer would be more effectual for enhancing the growth rate and achieving the vertical-alignment of CNTs rather than other buffer materials from results of SEM study. The crystalline graphitic structure of CNTs is improved as the catalyst dot reaches a critical size. Also, the field-emission result shows that the CNTs using Ni catalyst would be more favorable for improving electron-emission capabilities of CNTs compared with other samples.
Coating of amorphous nitride thin layers, such as boron nitride (BN) and carbon nitride (CN), has been performed on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for the purpose of enhancing their electron-emission performances because those nitride films have relatively low work functions and commonly exhibit negative electron affinity behavior. The CNTs were directly grown on metal-tip (tungsten, approximately 500 nm in diameter at the summit part) substrates by inductively coupled plasma-chemical vapor deposition (ICP-CVD). Sharpening of the tungsten tips were carried out by electrochemical etching. Morphologies and microstructures of BN and CN films were analyzed by field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) spectroscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The electron-emission properties (such as maximum emission currents and turn-on fields) of the BN-coated and CN-coated CNT-emitters were characterized in terms of the thickness of BN and CN layers.
For the enhancement of the nucleation density of the diamond film, we introduced the cyclic process. The cyclic process was carried out by the on/off control of CH$_4$ flow rate for a relatively short time (10 min), compared with the total reaction time (6 h). Prior to depositing the diamond film, we made the pretreated glass substrate via the unidirectional scratch using ∼l $\mu\textrm{m}$ size diamond powders. Diamond films were deposited on the pretreated glass substrate in a microwave plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (MPECVD) system. We observed the enhancement of the nucleation density of the diamond films caused by the cyclic process. Detailed surface morphologies of the substrate were investigated after the cyclic process. Based on these results, we discussed the cause for the enhancement of the nucleation density on the pretreated glass substrate by the cyclic process.
Polyurethane microcapsules were synthesized by interfacial polymerization in an aqueous poly(ethylene glycol) dispersion with ethylenediamine as chain extender of toluene diisocyanate in perfume oil using poly(vinyl alcohol) as the stabilizing agent. The effect of chemical structure on the average particle size and distributions, morphologies, and thermal properties to design microcapsules for the sustained release system was investigated. It came to be known that polyurethane microcapsules with ethylene diamine as chain extender had a rounder, more permeable and controlled release membranes. And the release test of polyurethane microcapsules with different soft segment content was done to certify the effect of long methylene chain. According to the higher molecular weight of polyether polyol, the release rate of microencapsulated disperse dye molecular was faster.
Monodispersed spherical silica-coated ceria nanoparticles were prepared through a sol-gel process using tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and ceria fine particles. In this process, ceria fine particles were also prepared from cerium nitrate. The mean size of ceria particles was 300nm. Silica nanoparticles with narrow particle size distribution were prepared by controlled hydrolysis of TEOS solution. The silica sols were obtained by peptization, the process of redispersing a coagulated colloid, and were coated on ceria particles by the control of the weight ratio of silica/ceria and the pH of the mixture in aqueous solution. The morphologies of particles were characterized with scaning electron microscopy(SEM), transmission electron microscopy(TEM) and atomic force microscopy(AFM). The coating thickness of silica particles obtained by using this method was controlled in the range of 30 - 70nm.
In this study, the electrical conductivity of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and polyethylene synthesized by an extrusion process was evaluated. The MWCNTs used exhibited differences in their dispersion characteristics depending on the type of catalyst or synthesis gas used. Thus, the choice of catalyst or synthesis gas significantly affect the physicochemical state of the final MWCNTs and MWCNT-based composites. In this investigation, the characteristics of MWCNTs were analyzed in four cases by introducing ethylene and propylene gas to each catalyst synthesized using deposition precipitation and spray drying methods. The MWCNT-based composites synthesized using the catalyst prepared by deposition precipitation and the ethylene synthesis gas showed the best electrical conductivity. In principle, the morphologies of the MWCNTs indicate that the smaller the aggregate size and bundle thickness, the better the electrical conductivity of the MWCNT composites. This implies that the network is well-formed.
The influence of carbide formation on mechanical properties has been investigated in carburized steels. Through controlled diffusion and precipitation processes, the morphologies of carbides could be changed and then fine, networked, and spherical shapes at carburized layers were obtained. These morphological changes affected tensile and bending fatigue properties of the steel. The fine and the spherical carbides acted as resistance sites against crack propagation, which improved the mechanical properties. However, the networked carbides deteriorated the properties because the cracks propagated along the boundaries of them. These results indicate that the morphological control of carbides is one of important keys to improve the mechanical properties.
Nano-scaled metal oxides have been attractive materials for sensors, photocatalysis, and dye-sensitization for solar cells. We report the controlled synthesis and characterization of single crystalline $TiO_2$ nanowires via a catalyst-assisted vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) and vapor-solid (VS) growth mechanism during TiO powder evaporation. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) studies show that as grown $TiO_2$ materials are one-dimensional (1D) nano-structures with a single crystalline rutile phase. Also, energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy indicates the presence of both Ti and O with a Ti/O atomic ratio of 1 to 2. Various morphologies of single crystalline $TiO_2$ nano-structures are realized by controlling the growth temperature and flow rate of carrier gas. Large amount of reactant evaporated at high temperature and high flow rate is crucial to the morphology change of $TiO_2$ nanowire.
$TiO_2$ nanostructures with various morphologies like cubes, spheres, hexahedral pillars and spherical tubes were synthesized by microwave-assisted hydrothermal process. Each structure was obtained by changing the relative concentrations of titanium tetraisoproxide (TTIP), tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TBAH) and ethanol. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electoron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis were used to characterize the synthesized $TiO_2$ nanostructures. From these results, it has been proved that $TiO_2$ structure could be controlled to have specific morphology, size, surface area, pore volume and pore size distribution.
