  • This paper is concerned with the design of a robust tracking controller using a state observer on a robotic manipulator under the disturbance. The controller is designed to follow a step or ramp reference input without steady state error in the presence of a disturbance and a system parameter variation. In most cases, since all the state vectors are not measured, unmeasurable state vectors must be estimated or reconstructed. A reduced order observer is proposed to estimate unmeasurable state vectors of the non-linear system. Some problems are caused by the Coulomb friction, the disturbance, and the spring effect of a link between the drive motor and the manipulator arm. The state variables, directly measured and estimated by the reduced order observer, are fed back to the controller. When the robot system exhibits the 'limit cycle, the feedback gains initially obtained by optimal control theory are changed. As a result, the limit cycle is eliminated by the new controller gains,

  • In the design and operation of robot arms with flexible links, the equations of motion are required to exactly model the interaction between rigid motion and elastic motion and to be formulated efficiently. Thus, the flexible link is represented on the basis of the D-H rigid link representation to measure the elastic deformation. The equations of motion of robot arms, which are configured by the generalized coordinates of elastic and rigid degrees of freedom, are formulated by using F.E.M. to model complex shaped links systematically and by eliminating elastic mode of higher order that does not largely affect motion to reduce the number of elastic degree of freedom. Finally, presented is the result of simulation to flexible robotic arm whose joints are controlled by direct or PD control,

  • Assembly tasks are often performed by one robot with fixtures. This type of assembly system has low flexibility in terms of the variety of parts and the part-presentation the system can handle. This paper addresses assembly without fixtures using two-manipulator robot. An active method using force feedback is proposed for the peg-in-hole assembly in highly uncertain environment. Assembly states are defined as status having unique motion constraints and events are modeled as variation of the environmental force. The states are recognized through identification of the events using two 6-d. o. f. force/moment sensors. The proposed method is verified and evaluated by experiments with round peg-in-hole assembly.

  • Uncertainties are inevitable in robotic assembly in unstructured environment since it is difficult to construct fixtures to guide motions of robots. This paper proposes an augmented Petri net and an algorithm to adapt the assembly model on-line during actual assembly process. The augmented Petri net identifies events using force and position information simultaneously. Unmodeled contact states are identified and incorporated into the model on-line. The proposed method increases the level of intelligence of the robot system by enhancing the autonomy. The proposed method is evaluated by simulation and experiments with L-type peg-in-hole assembly using a two-arm robot system.

  • Pneumatic actuators have greater power to weight ratio than electric ones, but they have been rarely used as robotic actuators because of poor accuracy resulted from nonliearity of air. On the other hand, electric servo motors have glld controllability, but they have poor power to weight ratio. For the heavy load handling robot a combined actuating method was developed for vertical and horizontal axes of RISTBOT-ll which handles up to 250kgf load. In this paper, the control method is implemented and analyzed for the manufactured heavy load handling robot.

  • In this paper, a controller design method for the DC motor driving system is described emphasizing the specified degree of accuracy undergoing large time varying disturbances, coulomb friction and arm-load resonance. A feedforward compensation technique using the current controller is proposed, and resulting in the performance improvement as well as the implementational simplicity. A time-weighted quadratic performance index is used in the optimization of the controller, which is a salient way of obtaining better closed-loop performance in a simple manner. Computer simulations are also given to show the usefulness of the proposed techniques.

  • Numerous applications of position controlling devices using servoing technique and transmission of energy through belt drives are practiced in the industry. Belt drive is a simple, lightweight, low cost power transmission system. Belt drives provide freedom to position the motor relative to the load and this phenomenon enables reduction of the robot arm inertia. It also facilitates quick response when employed in robotics. In this paper, precision positioning of a belt driven mechanism using a feed-forward compensator under maximum acceleration and velocity constraints is proposed. The proposed method plans the desired trajectory and modifies it to compensate delay dynamics and vibration. Being an offline method, the proposed method could be easily and effectively adopted to the existing systems without any modification of the hardware setup. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated through computer simulation and experimental results.

  • It is the main problem to measure the position and orientation of a robot end effector for the calibration of robots. The calibration methods can be used as a tool to improve the accuracy of robots without change of the arm or control architecture of robots. But such calibration methods require the accurate measurements. Dynamic measurement of position and orientation Provides a solution of this problem and improves dynamic accuracy by dynamic calibration o( robots. This paper describes the development o( the laser tracking system capable of determining the static and dynamic performance of industrial robots. The structure and system components are presented and basic experimental results are included to demonstrate the instrument performance. The system can be applied to the remote controlled mobile robots as weil as the calibration of robots.

  • Linear controllers, such as LQG/LTR controller, have been investigated to control flexible link manipulators. The performance and complexity of these depend largely on the linearized model upon which the controller is designed. In this study, singular perturbation model is tested in designing a LQG/LTR controller for a flexible link manipulator. The order of the resulting controller is much lower than the one based on a full model. Through numerical study, it is shown that the performance of the proposed controller reaches reasonably to the one based on the full model.
