스토리텔링에서의 조명과 배경음악의 역할 분석 -디즈니 단편 애니메이션 <페이퍼맨>을 중심으로 (Analysis of Roles of Lighting and Background Musik for Storytelling - a Case Study of Disney's Short Animated Film )

  • In 2013, Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film was granted to Walt Disney's short animation, (2012). With various aspects of its excellence, I focus on the very effective use of digital lightings and underscores for storytelling as its success factors. In this respect, this paper aims at analyzing the roles of the visual factors, especially tone, contrast, etc. created by lightings, and audio factors, especially underscores, in the film's story development. I find that can be characterized by the well-built story structure with distinct three acts. The main stream of the story is expressed with the overall mood that is created by the fine adjustments of brightness of the main light, and contrast. And the direction and the intensity of the lighting successfully describe the emotions of the characters in each scene. In addition, I find that properly chosen and positioned underscores make the development of the story more dynamic and more harmonized.

Biological Applications of Helium Ion Microscopy

  • The helium ion microscope (HIM) has recently emerged as a novel tool for imaging and analysis. Based on a bright ion source and small probe, the HIM offers advantages over the conventional field emission scanning electron microscope. The key features of the HIM include (1) high resolution (ca. 0.25 nm), (2) great surface sensitivity, (3) great contrast, (4) large depth-of-field, (5) efficient charge control, (6) reduced specimen damage, and (7) nanomachining capability. Due to the charge neutralization by flood electron beam, there is no need for conductive metal coating for the observation of insulating biological specimens by HIM. There is growing evidence that the HIM has substantial potential for high-resolution imaging of uncoated insulating biological specimens at the nanoscale.

A Predictive Model for Sensory Difference Tests Accounting for Sequence Effects

  • Sequential Sensitivity Analysis (SSA) and conditional stimulus model have been developed to describe sequence effects in difference tests and proposed to generate prediction of differences in sensitivity between various test protocols and to assist the appropriate selection of difference test. Yet, such models did not furnish a complete explanation of the relative sensitivity in 4 different versions of 3-alternative forced choice (AFC) tests where various interstimulus rinses were introduced. In the present study, the vector of the contrasts between various conditional stimuli were measured using same-different and 2-AFC and a new 16-distribution conditional stimulus model was developed by refining Lee and O'Mahony's contrast model. This new model gave superior predictions than previous models.

한국 전통주택의 실내 배색 및 색조 특성에 관한 연구 -조선후기의 상류주택을 중심으로- (Characteristics of Interior Color combination and Tone in Korean Traditional Houses -Focused on Upper Class Houses of the Late Chosun Dynasty-)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the color combination characteristic and to find out the characteristics of color tones in interior environments of Korean traditional houses. The results of the interior color combination analysis, it was revealed that contrast was the most dominant in architectural elements color. In the furniture, graduation, contrast and analogous harmony were mainly used. Single color harmony, analogous harmony, complementary harmony were the dominant color combination characteristics in interior accesories. Color tones of architectural elements were dull and light(pale, light grayish, light grayish) and color tones of furniture were dark and dull(dull, dark, dark grayish). However, interior accessories of an-bang show wide range of color tones raging vivid to dark tone, while sarang-bang accessories have tendency to soft, gray and dull tones. Therefore, the color tones of an-bang and sarang-bang elements show clear differences.

Finite Step Method for the Constrained Optimization Problem in Phase Contrast Microscopic Image Restoration

  • The aim of microscopic image restoration is to recover the image by applying the inverse process of degradation, and the results facilitate automated and improved analysis of the image. In this work, we consider the problem of image restoration as a minimization problem of convex cost function, which consists of a least-squares fitting term and regularization terms with non-negative constraints. The finite step method is proposed to solve this constrained convex optimization problem. We demonstrate the convergence of this method. Efficiency and restoration capability of the proposed method were tested and illustrated through numerical experiments.

함정 적외선 신호의 관리방법 연구 (A Study on the Management Methods of the Ship Infrared Signature)

  • In the development process of new naval ships, it is necessary to make the effort of the signature management and reduction of ship infrared(IR) signature to increase the ship survivability(susceptibility). So far the ship's contrast radiant intensity is used as a ship IR signature design criteria during the naval ship design stages. However, nowaday it is in a state of disorder at the basic design stage because of the lack of any related studies and methods. In this study, the IR signature management methods for improving the signature reduction and ship survivability are suggested by the comparison analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of signature management techniques. And also the criteria for the ship signature management are suggested when considering the infrared signature measuring assets and sea trial environments of the Korean peninsula.

Growth curve modeling of nucleus F0 on Korean accentual phrase

  • The present study investigates the effect of Accentual Phrase on F0 using a subset of large-scale corpus of Seoul Korean. Four syllable words which were neither preceded nor followed by silent pauses were presumed to be canonical exemplars of Accentual Phrases in Korean. These four syllable words were extracted from female speakers' speech samples. Growth curve analyses, combination of regression and polynomial curve fitting, were applied to the four syllable words. Four syllable words were divided into four groups depending on the categorical status of the initial segment: voiceless obstruents, voiced obstruents, sonorants, and vowels. Results of growth curve analyses indicate that initial segment types have an effect on the F0 (in semitone) in the nucleus of the initial syllable, and the cubic polynomial term revealed that some of the medial low tones in the 4 syllable words may be guided by the principle of contrast maximization, while others may be governed by the principle of ease of articulation.

  • This study analyze of reflection wave to Acoustic stimulation on acupoints and contrast parts for objectification of the meridian substance. In order to verify meridian pathway and channel theory of bio-energy in body. It was analyzed response characteristic of reflection waves after acoustic stimulation by sound wave of 5 specific tones. The response characteristics of reflection are measured by the average current magnitude of meridian. The current variation ratio are Live Meridian(gung) 33.2%, Heart Meridian(sang) 30.7%, Kidney Meridian (gak) 33.1%, Spleen Meridian(chi) 33.9%, Lung Meridian (wo) 30.7% compare with contrast parts (non-acupoint and meridian). Therefore meridian is distinguished to non-meridian and 5 vital meridians have relationship with sound wave of 5 specific tones.

도로터널의 경계부 순응휘도 측정 및 분석 (Measurement and Analysis of Adaptation Luminance in the Threshold Zone of the Road Tunnel)

  • As the standard lighting required in the threshold zone of a road tunnel is determined by the enough contrast. Lighting design, therefore, must be determined by the calculation method of threshold luminance based on the adaptation luminance of the driver approaching the tunnel. The veiling luminance and the luminance in the access zone were measured at different time and in different weather using the veiling luminance method, a kind of perceived contrast methods, and the L20 method when the range of vision was 20 degrees. On the basis of the measured data each threshold luminance was calculated and its results were analyzed.

터널의 가시성 개선을 위한 Counter-beam 효과 연구 (The Contrast Analysis of Counter-beam for Tunnel Visibility)

  • 도로의 가시성(Visibility)은 운전자에게 매우 중요하다. 특히 차량이 터널을 통과할 때의 가시성은 더욱 중요한데, 터널내의 조명은 운전사의 가시성에 많은 영향을 미친다. 이러한 가시성 향상을 위하여 새로운 터널조명 방식인 Counter-beam 조명이 유럽과 일본을 중심으로 최근 소개되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 터널조명 발전을 위한 새로운 접근 방법론을 제시하고 기본적인 상황에서 Counter-beam 조명의 효과를 Simulation을 통하여 분석하고 평가함으로써 그 적용 가능성을 알아본다.
