  • The paper presents a case study of a limestone quarry of the Philippines, where major problems in terms of improper fragmentation, poor wall control, and poor heave of the muck pile were witnessed. The paper highlights the significant role of switching over from diagonal firing pattern to V-type firing pattern, and also of making suitable adjustments in the stemming column length for improved confinement and gas retention. The study revealed that by making aforesaid design modifications in the blast round, marked improvement in blasting results was registered. Looking at the results, it was further contemplated to expand the mesh area in the subsequent blast rounds. The mesh area was incremented from the existing $8.96m^2$ to $12m^2$. The results were meticulously registered in the field, and clearly depicted definite improvements in the blast results in terms of increased P.F., reduced boulder count, reduced FEL cycle time, reduced dozing hours and improved heave.

  • To interpret a change of discourse can be a method to understand architectural space in progress. With this idea, features of modern age which motivated sense of the contemporary were considered in this study and subsequently characteristics of contemporary space differentiated from the modern were researched. First of all, features of subject which provided a base of modern thoughts were contemplated. The word 'modern' is used in wide and various terms but basically its core conception consists of reason and universal rationality. The subject of the modem age has vision-centric features just like an ideal representation principle of perspective. Given the fact, it was confirmed that a position to become a right subject, that is, a position controlled by reason existed and that it was to guarantee subject a truth. However, the contemporary subject keeps changing with a purpose of escaping from modern characteristics. It presents a tendency to escape from rationalism of the modern age and Platonism of the ancient Greece which established a basis of western ideology. The subject-centered ideas came to focus on the structure and relationship firmed fundamentally in deep inside of subject. The contemporary subject which escaped from the stiffen ideas bears a meaning through events taking place on immanence surface and serialization. Also, the contemporary architectural space is considered to go abreast with the change and trend. In conclusion, this study proved that features of event-oriented architectural space based on the changing contemporary subject appear as process-based space, user-participated space and individual-cognition space and the like.

  • In analyzing whole surface of non-topographic objects, the design of multi-station photogrammetric network must involve a number of questions such as geometric configuration of exposure stations, imaging geometry, control point configuration or weight allowance of adjustments. Above all, the surveying of the interior of narrow longitudinal structures needs the design of special photogrammetric network. The main objective of this paper is to suggest the schemes for solving difficult problems attendant upon whole inside-surface analysis of structure and to improve the accuracy and reliability of final measurements. For it, the multi-station exposure network suitable to shape and size of the inside of the structure was designed. Then three dimensional data were acquired by bundle adjustments derived from multi-station photos and the effects of network design factors on accuracy of measurements were contemplated. Also, the algorithm for detection of blunders was developed here is expected to lead to improvement of the reliability of photogrammetric solutions.

  • According to Chinese Arbitration Law, combination of mediation with arbitration means that in the process of arbitration, arbitrator may conduct mediation proceedings for the case they are handling, provided both parties agree to do so. If mediation succeeds and the parties reach a settlement agreement, the arbitrators may render a consent award or a written mediation statement in accordance with the contents of the settlement agreement. If mediation fails, the arbitration proceedings will be resumed until the case is concluded by making of an arbitral award. There is no formal name of this system in China, it is called "combination of mediation with arbitration", "mediation in arbitration process" or "arbitration-mediation", the author of this thesis select "arbitration-mediation" and make it simply as "Arb-Med". This thesis concentrates on three issues that arbitrators and the parties have to clarify and pay attention to once they choose to use Arb-Med. The first part is about the 'waivable problems', include waive the right to challenge a arbitrator who act as a mediator at the same time with parties' approval, as well as the question about the waiver of the arbitrator's duty to disclose confidential information obtained during mediation. The second part is 'public policy in Arb-Med', introduces the concept of public policy, the bias may arise the complaint about public policy, and the due procedure problem. And the last part is about the award deals with a difference not contemplated by or not falling within the terms of the submission to arbitration, or it contains decisions on matters beyond the scope of the submission to arbitration, especially about the award including some contents which has relation to third party's interests.

  • Four truncation selection schemes (SSs) were framed to predict and compare the age structures and genetic responses under the influence of various factor employing the scheme-specific algorithms. Two paths of selection, sires (bulls' sires) and dams (bulls' dams) to breed young bulls were considered. Among variable factors, four levels (0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9) of precision of evaluation, five levels (0.0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20 genetic standard deviation) of genetic differences among age classes and 4 levels of proportions selected (for bulls' sire, 0.05, 0.10, 0.125, 0.25, and for bulls' dams 0.02, 0.04, 0.05, and 0.10) contemplated on both paths of selection. The number of age classes for bulls' dams and bulls' sires were 4 or 8 and 2 or 4, respectively. The stayability across age classes for bulls' dams was assumed to be 0.80 or 0.60. The candidates for selection for bulls' sires were equally distributed (0.5 or 0.25) across the age classes. The SS1 (selection on same proportions as candidates' distribution) revealed longest generation lengths and lowest yearly genetic responses. The average ages were youngest and yearly genetic responses were highest in SS4 (selection at each age-specific truncation point with the same average genetic superiority of selected parents across the ages) and followed by SS3 (selection at each agespecific truncation point with same predicted genetic values) and SS2 (selection at common truncation point on phenotypic values) in a population with overlapping generations. The results revealed the importance of choosing suitable selection scheme to acquire maximum yearly genetic responses especially when the genetic differences among age classes are large and the precision of evaluation is relatively low.

  • The end plates of fuel cell assemblies are used to fasten the inner stacks, reduce the contact pressure, and provide a seal between Membrane-Electrode Assemblies (MEAs). They therefore require sufficient mechanical strength to withstand the tightening pressure, light weight to obtain high energy densities, and stable chemical/electrochemical properties, as well as provide electrical insulation. The design criteria for end plates can be divided into three parts: the material, connecting method, and shape. In the past, end plates were made from metals such as aluminum, titanium, and stainless steel alloys, but due to corrosion problems, thermal losses, and their excessive weight, alternative materials such as plastics have been considered. Composite materials consisting of combinations of two or more materials have also been proposed for end plates to enhance their mechanical strength. Tie-rods have been traditionally used to connect end plates, but since the number of connecting parts has increased, resulting in assembly difficulties, new types of connectors have been contemplated. Ideas such as adding reinforcement or flat plates, or using bands or boxes to replace tie-rods have been proposed. Typical end plates are rectangular or cylindrical solid plates. To minimize the weight and provide a uniform pressure distribution, new concepts such as ribbed-, bomb-, or bow-shaped plates have been considered. Even though end plates were not an issue in fuel cell system designs in the past, they now provide a great challenge for designers. Changes in the materials, connecting methods, and shapes of an end plate allow us to achieve lighter, stronger end plates, resulting in more efficient fuel cell systems.

  • Since the isolation bearings undergo large displacements in base-isolated structures, impact with adjacent structures is inevitable. Therefore, in this investigation, the effect of impact on seismic response of isolated structures mounted on double concave friction pendulum (DCFP) bearings subjected to near field ground motions is considered. A non-linear viscoelastic model of collision is used to simulate structural pounding more accurately. 2-, 4- and 8-story base-isolated buildings adjacent to fixed-base structures are modeled and the coupled differential equations of motion related to these isolated systems are solved in the MATLAB environment using the SIMULINK toolbox. The variation of seismic responses such as base shear, displacement in the isolation system and superstructure (top floor) is computed to study the impact condition. Also, the effects of variation of system parameters: isolation period, superstructure period, size of seismic gap between two structures, radius of curvature of the sliding surface and friction coefficient of isolator are contemplated in this study. It is concluded that the normalized base shear, bearing and top floor displacement increase due to impact with adjacent structure. When the distance between two structures decreases, the base shear and displacement increase comparing to no impact condition. Besides, the increase in friction coefficient difference also causes the normalized base shear and displacement in isolation system and superstructure increase in comparison with bi-linear hysteretic behavior of base isolation system. Totally, the comparison of results indicates that the changes in values of friction coefficient have more significant effects on 2-story building than 4- and 8-story buildings.

  • Purpose: To investigate the prognostic factors and effectiveness of postoperative radiotherapy alone for endometrial carcinoma. Materials and Methods: Sixty four patients with stage I-III endometrial cancer (EC) treated with postoperative radiotherapy alone between January 1989 and December 2008 at the Keimyung University Dongsan Medical Center were chosen for the present study. Typically, total hysterectomy, salpingo-oophorectomy and lymphadenectomy were performed on the patient's pelvis. Total dose from 50.4 Gy to 63 Gy was irradiated at pelvis or extended field. Thirteen patients were treated with Co-60 or Ir-192 intracavitary radiotherapy. Follow-up periods were from 7 to 270 months, with a median of 56 months. Results: Five year overall survival (OS) rate was 58.7%, respectively. Five year disease-free survival (DFS) rate was 59.2%, respectively. In univariate analysis for OS and DFS, stage, menopausal age, type of operation, serosal invasion, and lymph node involvement were found to be statistically significant. Histologic type was marginally significant. In multivariate analysis for OS and DFS, stage, types of operation, histologic type were also found to be statistically significant. Treatment failure occurred in 14 patients. The main pattern of failure was found to be distant metastasis. Time to distant metastasis was from 3 to 86 months (median, 12 months). There were no grade 3 or 4 complications. Conclusion: Stage, types of operation, and histologic type could be the predictive prognostic factors in patients. We contemplated postoperative radiation as effective and safe treatment method for EC. Additional treatment would be needed to reduce distant metastasis.

  • A study is to research crash barriers for vehicles that prevent road breakaway of vehicles and protect car passengers and pedestrians as absorbing impulse. Protection performance tests on vehicle passengers were simulated by using a LS-DYNA program. Through repetitive simulation on various speed and angles, passenger protection performance according to different impact condition was contemplated. Variable setting for the simulation was calculated as the mean weight of domestic car sales. By analyzing NASS (National Automotive Sampling System) of NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) of the U.S., the actual speed and collision angle section of accidents were computed. As a result, we confirmed that THIV (Theoretical Head Impact Velocity) and PHD (Post-impact Head Deceleration) are increased according to the impact speed and angle. Also, when the vehicle hit the guardrail post, we could be confirmed that the passenger protection performance greatly decreased.
