The Submerged Biofilm Process using Oyster-Shell Media for Wastewater Treatment and Prediction (굴패각을 담체로 사용한 침적고정 생물막공법 및 예측)

  • This study was conducted to use oyster shell as media for biological wastewater treatment. The comparison between the removal efficiencies of the activated sludge and the submerged biofilm process with oyster shell media (5% of reactor volume) for domestic sewage treatment was made. The contaminant removal efficiencies of the submerged process were higher than that of the activated sludge process. And the removal efficiencies of the submerged biofilm process with oyster shell media of 10% and 18% were Investigated at various loading rate. The removal efficiencies of 10% were higher than that of the 18% during the experimental period. The effluent concentration from the sub- merged bloom process using oyster shell media was prediceted by the Stover-Kincannon model.

지하수 모니터링을 통한 오염물질(TEX)의 자연저감능 평가

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate petroleum hydrocarbon degradation processes governing natural attenuation at tile contaminated site and accomplished through conducting on investigation of degradation rate, capacity, and mechanism of the monitored natural attenuation. The monitoring results of the three years indicated that the concentrations of DO, nitrate, and sulfate in the contaminated area were significantly lower than these in the none-contaminated area. The results also showed a higher ferrous iron concentration, a lower redox potential and a neutral pH in the contaminated groundwater, suggesting that biodegradation of TEX is the major on-going process in the contaminated area. However, reduction of TEX in the groundwater was not only biodegradation but also dilution and reaeration during infiltration of uncotaminated surface and groudwater.

  • In-situ particle monitors(ISPMs) are widely used for monitoring contaminant particles in vacuum-based semiconductor manufacturing equipment. In the present research, the performance of a Particle Measuring Systems(PMS) Vaculaz-2 ISPM at low pressures has been studied. We generated the uniform sized methylene blue particle beams using three identical aerodynamic lenses in the center of the vacuum line, and measured the detection efficiency of the ISPM. The effects of particle size, particle concentration, mass flow rate, system pressure, and arrangement of aerodynamic lenses on the detection efficiency of the ISPM were examined. Results show that the detection efficiency of the ISPM greatly depends on the mass flow rate, and the particle Stokes number. We also found that the optimum Stokes number ranges from 0.4 to 1.9 for the experimental conditions.

Changes in Steroid Hormones Levels of Olive Flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus Exposed to Phenanthrene

  • Phenanthrene, one of Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with three aromatic rings, is a ubiquitous contaminant in the environment. Phenanthrene has been identified in ambient air, drinking water and sediment. We examined the effect of phenanthrene on steroid hormones level of olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus. Plasma testosterone level was increased significantly in fish exposed to phenanthrene($\geq1.0 \mu M$) at 4th week. However, there was no significant changes of estradiol-17$\beta$ concentration in fish exposed to phenanthrene. The physiological variation in phenanthrene exposed fish was a dramatic increase in plasma cortisol level. It is concluded that chronic exposure of phenanthrene can induce increase of plasma testosterone levels and elevate the plasma cortisol level in flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus.

  • Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE), an octane booster that is added to the reformulated gasoline, has been a widespread contaminant in aquatic ecosystem. MTBE is a recalcitrant pollutant having low biodegradability. Due to its higher water solubility and low octanol-water partition coefficient, it can be rapidly transported to the surrounding water environment. Also, MTBE is a known animal carcinogen, and is classified as a possible human carcinogen by U. S. Environmental Protection Agency. The adverse effect of MTBE to aquatic biota was widely reported. In Korea, the recent detection of MTBE in groundwater near gasoline filling stations has drawn concern to public health and ecosystem. To address this concern, the effect of MTBE to human health and ecosystem was discussed in this review. Also, ecotoxicity data of MTBE for fish, invertebrates, and algae were extensively compared to estimate the hazard concentration 5($HC_5$) of MTBE as a screening level.

Application of Manganese Oxide for the Oxidative Degradation of Bisphenol-A in Aqueous Phase (망간산화물을 이용한 수용액내 Bisphenol-A의 산화 반응성 평가)

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the detoxification method for the endocrine disrupting chemicals by manganese oxide. Manganese coated sand and bisphenol-A (BPA) was used as the reactive medium and the contaminant. Results showed that manganese oxide effectively degrades BPA by oxidative coupling reaction. The nonlinear oxidative coupling reaction orders were obtained for BPA and oxide, respectively. The reaction rate of BPA decreased as initial BPA concentration increased, as oxide loading decreased and as pH increased. The higher ionic strength, the higher reaction rate was observed. Divalent cations were adsorbed on the oxide surfaces, resulting in the decreased degradation rate of BPA.

  • For the purpose of ground improvement by means of soil flushing systems. Incorporated technique with prefabricated vertical drains have been used for dewatering from fine-grained soils. The laboratory model tests were performed by using the flushing tracer solutions for silty soils and recorded the tracer concentration changes with the elapsed time and flow rates. A mathematical model for prediction of contaminant transport using the PVD technology has been developed. The clean-up times for the predictions on both soil condition indicate more of a sensitivity to the dispersivity parameter than to the extracted flow rate and vertical velocity parameters. Based on the results of the analyses, numerical analysis indicate that the most important factor to the in-situ soil remediation in prefabricated vertical drain system is the effective diameter of contaminated soil.

  • Remediation of groundwater contaminated with chlorinated organics, nitro aromatics, and heavy metals using zero valent iron (ZVI) filings has paid considerable attention in recent years. When the contaminants of high concentration leaked abundantly in subsurface environment, permeable reactive barrier technology using iron filing is taken a long time for the remediation of contaminated groundwater, The problem of contaminant shock is able to be solved using surfactant (hexadecyltrimethylammonium, HDTMA) modified bentonite (SMB) as immobilizing material. Therefore, the purpose of this research was to develop the combined remediation technology using conventional permeable reactive and immobilizing barrier for the enhanced decontamination of chlorinated compounds. Four column experiments were conducted to assess the performance of the mixed reactive materials with Ottawa sand, iron filing, and HDTMA-bentonite for trichloroethylene (TCE) removal under controlled groundwater flow conditions. TCE reduction rates with sand/iron filing/HDTMA-bentonite were highest among four column due to dechlorination of TCE by iron filing and sorption of TCE by SMB.

Accumulation and Depuration of Fluoranthene, a Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon, in Rockfish Sebastes schlegeli (조피볼락 (Sebastes schiegeii)에서 다환성방향족탄화수소 fluoranthene의 축적과 배설)

  • Rockfish Sebastes schlegeli was exposed to fluoranthene, a ubiquitous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, at 1 and 10 $\mu$g/L for 4 weeks followed by depuration period of 8 weeks. Although the fluoranthene in the p]asma reached only 1.8$\~$1.9 times seawater concentration, it was 6.5 $\~$ 15.7 times higher in the liver, spleen and bile indicating efficient accumulation in the lipid -containing body tissues. When the exposed fish were then maintained in clean water, rapid fluoranthene decline occurred in the initial 2 weeks followed by a rather slow phase. This result suggests that fluoranthene accumulates efficiently provided the existence in the culture medium, but the contaminant disappears rapidly once the chemical source is removed. The fluoranthne residue in fish tissues my be a good indifator for relent PAHs exposure.

  • In treatment of contaminated ground by electrokinetic remediation, pH control is the main prolllem for enhancinfi remediation efficiency. In this study, analysed pH variation characteristics according to contaminant(Pb$^{2+}$) concentration and estimated remediation efficiency with organic acid to prevent precipitation in cathode due to hydroxide ion occurrence. Because most of transported Pb$^{2+}$ is precipitatecl according as pH is increased at specimen adjacent to cathode reservoir, little magnitude of Pb$^{2+}$ is flowed out of specimen.cimen.
