The behaviour of buried rigid pipe under embankment is analysed by a linear finite element program to study the influence of variation of the geometry of soil-conduit pipe system and elastic modulus of soil on the pipe response. The geometry of the system considered includes the thickness of pipe, the height of embankment, and the width arid the depth of trench. The normal contact pressure distribution around the pipe and the vertical load on the pipe are modelled by a multiple linear regression. And the vertical load on the pipe computed by Marston-Spangles Theory Is generally larger than that by finite element analysis. The settiement ratio in Marston-Spangler Theory is found to be variable for various for various of all factors mentioned above.

Experimental study is conducted for investigating the characteristics of friction-induced noise with respect to the variation of system geometry. In this study, a vertically fixed rod is in contact with the reciprocating plate which is controlled by the step motor. Friction noise is generated during the reciprocating motion due to the frictional contact between the plastic pin and the aluminum plate. The frequencies of the friction noise are changed when the height of the rod varies. However, it is found that the vibration modes involved in the friction noise are not changed. It implies that the unstable modes remain unstable regardless of the change of the system geometry, and thus, there are the certain mode shapes which are likely to produce friction noise.

In order to investigate the effects of geometry factors such as a roil diameter ratio and backup roll crown of the stress concentration factor on the edge of backup roil end, 3-dimensional FEM analyses of stress at the contact of backup roll and work roll assembled in a 4-high strip mill were carried out, It was made clear that the peak stress at the edge is about 2 to 3 times of that at the longitudinal center of the roll barrel and the peak stress proportionally increase with decreasing the ratio of backup roll diameter to work roll diameter Furthermore a crowning on the backup roll is effective to decrease the maximum edge stress.
Sealing an oil-air mixture plays important roles to have an enhanced lubrication for high speed spindle. High speed spindles require non-contact type sealing mechanism. In this study, an optimum seal design to minimize leakage is concerned in the aspect of flow control. This paper categorizes geometries of mostly used non-contact type seals and analyzes each leakage characteristics to minimize a leakage on sealing area. Effect of minimum clearance and its position are considered according to variation of detail geometry. The estimation of non-leaking property is determined by amount of pressure drop in the leakage path assuming constant leakage flow. To simulate an oil jet or oil mist type high speed spindle lubrication, the working fluid is regarded as two phases that are mixed flow of oil phase and air phase. Both of the turbulence and the compressible flow model were introduced in CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis. Design parameters has been induced to minimize leakage in limited space, and a methodological study on geometrical optimization has been conducted.
In this paper, we prove that a diffeomorphism f on a normal almost contact 3-manifold M is a CRL-transformation if and only if M is an α-Sasakian manifold. Moreover, we show that a CR-loxodrome in an α-Sasakian 3-manifold is a pseudo-Hermitian magnetic curve with a strength $q={\tilde{r}}{\eta}({\gamma}^{\prime})=(r+{\alpha}-t){\eta}({\gamma}^{\prime})$ for constant 𝜂(𝛄'). A non-geodesic CR-loxodrome is a non-Legendre slant helix. Next, we prove that let M be an α-Sasakian 3-manifold such that (∇YS)X = 0 for vector fields Y to be orthogonal to ξ, then the Ricci tensor 𝜌 satisfies 𝜌 = 2α2g. Moreover, using the CRL-transformation $\tilde{\nabla}^t$ we fine the pseudo-Hermitian curvature $\tilde{R}$, the pseudo-Ricci tensor $\tilde{\rho}$ and the torsion tensor field $\tilde{T}^t(\tilde{S}X,Y)$.

Graphene electronics is one of the promising technologies for the next generation electronic devices due to the outstanding properties such as conductivity, high carrier mobility, mechanical, and optical properties along with extended applications using 2 dimensional heterostructures. However, large contact resistance between metal and graphene is one of the major obstacles for commercial application of graphene electronics. In order to achieve low contact resistance, numerous researches have been conducted such as gentle plasma treatment, ultraviolet ozone (UVO) treatment, annealing treatment, and one-dimensional graphene edge contact. In this report, we suggest a fabrication method of one-dimensional graphene metal edge contact without using graphene exfoliation. Graphene is grown on Cu foil by low pressure chemical vapor deposition. Then, the graphene is transferred on $SiO_2/Si$ wafer. The patterning of graphene channel and metal electrode is done by photolithography. $O_2$ plasma is applied to etch out the exposed graphene and then Ti/Au is deposited. As a result, the one-dimensional edge contact geometry is built between metal and graphene. The contact resistance of the fabricated one-dimensional metal-graphene edge contact is compared with the contact resistance of vertically stacked conventional metal-graphene contact.

LHP is different from a conventional heat pipes in design and heat and fluid flow passages. The situations of the former is much complex than the latter. In LHPs, evaporation occurs at the contact interface between the heating plate and the porous wick, so some micro channels machined at the contact interface serve to let the vapor flow out of the evaporator. This complexity of contact geometry was known to cause a high resistance to heat flow. The present work was to study the problem of heat passage across the contact surface for LHPs and determine those values contact resistance. For two cases of contact structures, the thermal contact resistances were examined experimentally, one being obtained through mechanical contact under pressure and the other through sintered bonding. Nickel powder wick and copper plate were used for specimens. The result showed that a substantial reduction of contact resistance of an order of degree could be obtainable by sintered bonding.
This paper presents an optimization method to determine the shoulder height of an angular contact ball bearing by 3D contact analysis using nondimensional-shaped variables. The load analysis of the ball bearing is performed to calculate the internal load distributions and contact angles of each rolling element. From the results of bearing load analysis and the contact geometry between the ball and inner/outer raceway, 3D contact analyses using influence function are conducted. The nondimensional shoulder height and nondimensional load are defined to give the generalized results. The relationship between the shoulder height and radius of curvature of the shoulder under various loading conditions is investigated in order to propose a design method for the two design parameters. Using nondimensional parameters, the critical shoulder heights are optimized with loads, contact angles, and conformity ratios. We also develop contour maps of the critical shoulder height as functions of internal loads and contact angles for the different contact angles using nondimensional parameters. The results show that the dimensionless shoulder height increased as the contact angle and dimensionless load increased. Conversely, when the conformity ratio increased, the critical shoulder height decreased. Therefore, if the contact angle is reduced and the conformity ratio is increased within the allowable range, it will be an efficient design to reduce the shoulder height of ball bearings.

In this paper, a new estimation method is proposed to calculate steering rack axial force using a 3 dimensional tire mesh model when a car is standing on the road. This model is established by considering changes of camber angle and contact patch between the tires and the ground according to steering angle. The steering rack bar axial force is estimated based on the static equilibrium equations of forces and moments. A tire friction force is supposed to act on the center point of the contact patch, and the proportional coefficient of friction depending on contact patch is suggested. Using the proposed estimation method, rack axial force sensitivity analysis is evaluated according to changes of suspension geometry. Then optimal motor power of Motor Driven Power Steering(MDPS) is evaluated using suggested rack forces.

The cycloid reducer has very high efficiency, high ratios, high stiffness and small size, in comparison with a conventional gear mechanism, which makes it an attractive candidate for limited space and precision application such as industrial robot. There are several publications on analysis and design of the cycloid reducer, however, it was assumed that the contact stiffness of pin rollers and cycloid disk is constant regardless of their contact geometry. Moreover, the torsional stiffness of the cycloid reducer couldn't be calculated due to the assumption. In this paper, we present a new procedure of calculating torsional stiffness of the cycloid reducer using Hertz contact theory. First, conventional force analysis of the cycloid reducer is briefly reviewed. Then, iterative numerical calculation procedure of the contact stiffness is proposed based on the Hertz contact theory where the contact stiffness depends on the contact force. In addition, total torsional stiffness of the cycloid reducer is estimated considering its rolling element bearing stiffness. The torsional stiffness of the cycloid reducer is dominated by the rolling element bearing stiffness since the contact stiffness of the cycloid disk is too large.
