Purpose - Appropriate project management knowledge as well as its effective application in the construction industry increase construction quality and, therefore, reduce fatalities and destruction. Research design, data, and methodology - This study was conducted through a comparative analysis of earthquake fatalities in Iran, Turkey, Pakistan, Indonesia, China, Haiti, Japan, and the United States of America. The data was analyzed using a frequency study. The analysis contrasts the fatalities of some of the strongest earthquakes around the world between 1960 and 2010. Results - Poor quality construction practices and a lack of effective application of project management knowledge play a major role in the vast destruction, high death toll, and dismal tragedies that are associated with earthquakes, especially in Iran. Conclusions - Despite the history of tragic earthquakes and their continuing recurrence, this study attempts to make governments, companies, and disaster management personnel aware of the dangers of poor quality construction and the deficient application of project management knowledge and, further, accentuates effective ways to prevent the probability of serious damage in future. This study contains valuable information on the effects of project management application towards reducing earthquake fatalities and destruction.
Managing and reusing knowledge in engineering and construction sectors can lead to greater competitive advantage, improved designs, and more effective management of constructed facilities. The use of Information Technology (IT) in design and construction can exploit strategic opportunities for new ways of integration, sharing and facilitating information and knowledge in any field of engineering. The integrating of separate areas of IT can be used to bring a group of experts and specialists in any field of engineering closer together by allowing them to communicate and exchange information and expertise that facilitate knowledge capture, sharing, and reuse. A lack of an advisory management system and a need to marshal all available data in a common format has indicated the need for an integrated engineering computing environment to investigate concrete repair problems. The research described in this paper is based upon an evaluation management system (EMS) which comprising a database management system (REPCON) alongside visualisation technologies and evaluation system (ECON) is developed to produce an innovative platform which will facilitate and encourage the development of knowledge in educational, evolution and evaluation modes of concrete repair. This allows us to create assessment procedures that will allow the current condition of the concrete structure and its components to be expressed numerically using a confidence level (CL) so as to take the best course of action in the repair and maintenance management. The explained rating system, which is related to structural integrity and serviceability of the structure, allows the confidence level to be determined by visual inspection and the descriptive information and pictures taken from an available REPair of CONcrete (REPCON) database.

Recently, as the shape and function of high-rise buildings have become more complex, engineering for reflecting the constructability in the design phase has the increasing importance. However, engineering tasks are not performed at the appropriate level and timing in most projects, which leads to inefficient work such as design changes and reworks. Hence, this study investigated the constructability knowledge, design elements, and supporting tools required to conduct engineering tasks related to temporary work at the design phase, and also analyzed the relationship between these factors using the correlation analysis. As a result, when the engineering tasks are applied in the design phase, constructability knowledge related to 'construction method and process' is the most important and the design factor related to 'layout/arrangement' should be considered as the most important factor. Based on the results of this study, the project participants can efficiently use necessary constructability knowledge during the design phase and facilitate effective decision-making and design alternatives for enhancing constructability.
Knowledge Management System is defined as an Information system to support the integrated knowledge management process for maximizing value of the knowledge assets in organizations. From that point of view, the system performance - the usage level of the system and user satisfaction - can be an available measure of the knowledge management system success. Many previous research were focused on the application of a new technological component for knowledge management processes or the construction of the overall system architecture in spite of the importance of the system performance. The purpose of this study is to Identify the factors affecting the knowledge management system performance. To do this, we conducted an exploratory case studies of eight companies. We applied theories of information system success to knowledge management system and investigated some specific strategic components as additional affecting factors. Finally, we proposed research model and ex propositions regarding the factors affecting the knowledge management system performance. The implication of the findings and future research directions were discussed.

Knowledge recommendation is a type of recommendation system that recommends knowledge content to users in order to satisfy their needs. Although using graph neural networks to extract data features is an effective method for solving the recommendation problem, there is information loss when modeling real-world problems because an edge in a graph structure can only be associated with two nodes. Because one super-edge in the hypergraph structure can be connected with several nodes and the effectiveness of knowledge graph for knowledge expression, a dual-channel hypergraph convolutional neural network model (DCHC) based on hypergraph structure and knowledge graph is proposed. The model divides user data and knowledge data into user subhypergraph and knowledge subhypergraph, respectively, and extracts user data features by dual-channel hypergraph convolution and knowledge data features by combining with knowledge graph technology, and finally generates recommendation results based on the obtained user embedding and knowledge embedding. The performance of DCHC model is higher than the comparative model under AUC and F1 evaluation indicators, comparative experiments with the baseline also demonstrate the validity of DCHC model.

Chinese construction corporations take more market shares in the global construction market. The performance of Chinese construction corporations need to be reviewed from the capability and qualification system of the engineers including supervision engineer. The purpose of this study is to analyze the characteristics of professional qualifications for supervision engineer in China. The research methodology is to investigate the qualification exam system, process and examination subjects for searching the fundamental body of knowledge about supervision engineer qualification. The results shows that the qualification system in supervision engineer are classified in detail for the body of knowledge and operated by the government. The qualification examination requires broad and defied knowledge structure together with practical experiences. The research results may lead further research subjects of Chinese construction related qualifications and education system in the ways of more specificity, expertise, and practicality. The mutual understanding of qualification system becomes major issue to build better collaboration in global market.
The purpose of this paper is to suggest a particular approach to geomorphology education based on an epistemology (anti-realist of geomorphology knowledge. Anti-realist epistemology of geomorphology may be characterized by the belief that (1) geomorphology knowledge is made or constructed rather than discovered, (2) knowledge construction begins with the perception of meaningfulness of the landform, and (3) it means recognizing the given land in terms of shape or form; (4) the construction is, in other words, a subjective or inter-subjective interpretation by the perceivers; (5) knowledge develops along with the hermeneutic circles. Aims of geomorphology education according to this epistemology, may be (1) to have children not so much construct geomorphology knowledge as live the very construction, (2) to have children maintain an enduring interest in their surrounding landform, and (3) to have them appreciate the intimate connections between the landform of a region and the modes of living in that region. In short, aims of geomorphology education may have to be ontological, i.c., to have children engaged in the understanding as a process of living rather than for the resulting knowledge.
An air traffic control organization will require knowledge management to keep competitive advantage. A traffic controllers are forced to share their tacit as well as explicit knowledge among their organization to get aircraft's safety and efficient operation. The purpose of this study is to examine which factors influence the air traffic controllers' intention of sharing knowledge for the case of Civil Aviation Safety Authority, Ministry of Construction and Transportation. An ANOVA analysis shows that a difference exists between ages in terms of open mindedness towards sharing knowledge, the search for new knowledge and the recognition of the importance of sharing knowledge.

A paradigm shift in teaching modular construction in higher education and K-12 is proposed as a means to increase the future adoption of the modular construction technique. To this effect, a new education module is presented to STEM educators. This education module is based on LEGOs and directed towards educators in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry. The main objectives of the education module are to increase interest and knowledge of modular construction, acknowledge the benefits of using 3D design with 4D scheduling, and create a simulating hands-on educational opportunity. The education module is designed to allow participants to experience a hands-on simulation of modular construction and stick-built construction through building a LEGO project. Participants are challenged to find the advantages and disadvantages in both construction systems first-hand and record their findings. Results are presented from the preliminary testing of this education model on a group of construction management students at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Overall, the survey results showed that the LEGO education module was successful at achieving the project's three main objectives: 1) increasing the participants' interest and knowledge of modular construction through an interactive project; 2) increasing the participants' understanding of the benefits of 3D design with 4D scheduling over the use of 2D drawings; and 3) creating a simulating hands-on educational opportunity to help participants compare modular construction to stick-built construction. In the end, this proposed a new LEGO education module addressing the problems identified from this study with more participants.
Nowadays the Project Management is increasingly adapted into almost all the fields in business management processes among leading companies both in Korea and overseas. However its actual practices are rare to be found. Among the Project Life Cycle, this report covers the real cases of the PMBOK knowledge areas in NPP Architect Engineering. The areas of the Construction, Start-up and Operation will be exception of the cases. By way of analyzing the KEPCO ENC's Processes/Procedures/Systems and the ones in PMBOK Guide, this report will show the contents in the PMBOK Guide is rather practical than theoretical. Meanwhile, implications whether the conclusions of this report might be applied to other industries such as general construction, non-nuclear plants, etc. should be left behind to follow-up studies.
