  • This paper presents mechanical properties and carbonation behavior of the recycled aggregate concretes(RAC) in which natural aggregate was replaced by recycled coarse aggregate and fine aggregate by specified concrete strength levels(21, 35, 50MPa). A total of 18 RAC were produced and classified into six series, each of which included three mixes designed with three specified concrete strength levels of 21MPa, 35MPa and 50MPa and three recycled aggregate replacement ratios of 0, 50 and 100%. Physical and mechanical properties of RAC were tested for slump test, compressive strength, and carbonation depth. The test results indicated that the slump of RAC could be improved or same by recycled coarse aggregate replacement ratios, when compared with natural aggregate. But slump of RAC was decreased as the recycled fine aggregate replacement ratios increase. Also, the test results showed that the compressive strength was decreased as the recycled aggregate replacement ratios increased and it had a conspicuous tendency to decrease when the content of the recycled aggregate exceeded 50%. Furthermore, the result indicated that the measured carbonation depth increases by 40% with the increase of the recycled aggregate replacement. In the case of the concrete having low level compressive strength, the increase of carbonation depth tends to be higher when using the RCA. However, the trend of carbonation resistivity in high level compressive strength concrete is similar to that obtained in natural aggregate concrete. Therefore, an advance on the admixture application and mix ratio control are required to improve the carbonation resistivity when using the recycled aggregate in large scale.

  • Since 2004, the government decided to gradually introduce Actual Cost Data into cost estimate for improving problems of below-cost tendering and to reflect fair market price through competition and carry contract efficiently. However, there are many concerns that Actual Cost Data has not reflected real market price, even that has contributed to reduce the government's budget. General construction firm's burden for labor cost is imputed to specialty contractors and eventually it becomes construction worker's burden. Therefore, realization of Actual Cost Data is very important factor to settle this system. To understand realization level and make short term forecast, this paper drew construction group of which labor cost constitutes more than 95% of direct cost, and compares their Actual Cost Data with relevant skilled workers's unit wage and predicts using time series analysis. The bid price which is not be reflected market price accelerates work environment changes and leads to directly affect such as late disbursement of wages, bankruptcy to workers. Therefore this paper is expected to be used to the preliminary data for solving the problem and establishing improvement of Actual Cost Data.

  • The problems of environmental pollutions and resources depletion have been growing issues in global construction recently. Efforts to reduce $CO_2$ emission have been also made in all sectors of construction industry these days. As one of the biggest industries that consume a huge amount of resources and generate complex construction wastes, the construction industry has significant impacts on environment issues. However, systematic approach to manage wastes has been rarely made, and most construction wastes from construction sites are being land-filled or incinerated. In this study, a system is proposed to predict the amount of wastes in visual formats, and to control the process of wastes management. The system's main functions include : (1) to estimate the amount of wastes to be generated in project schedule, (2) to categorize the types of wastes, (3) to determine the timing of taking out wastes from sites, and (4) to share information regarding wastes for recycling. A huge amount of wastes are generated in construction process, but most of the wastes have been discharged in forms of mixed wastes, which make them hardly reused. The system not only provide information on wastes to be generated, but also prevent mixing various wastes by classifying them by types and schedules. This features of the system, along with functions to share wastes information with other agencies outside the site, are expected to enhance the level of wastes recycling to a great extent. By saving construction materials through wastes recycling, the system also contributes in reducing $CO_2$ emission.

  • There have been many efforts to identify and eliminate the direct causes of the construction accident, but many accidents are still occurring in the construction industry. The main reason for the construction accident is not because of ignorance of the causes, but because of safety insensitivity. This paper analyzes why construction workers feel safety insensitivity and how safety insensitivity varies depending on their age and work experience. A survey of 103 construction workers confirmed that systematic safety education is the most important factor in minimizing safety insensitivity of construction workers. On the other hand, economic reasons such as cost reduction were identified as the most tempting factor to increase safety insensitivity. In addition, the survey results showed that those in their 40s and 50s, the largest proportion of construction workers, have a significantly higher level of safety insensitivity than those in their 20s and 60s. These findings are expected to be valuable source that can be used to prevent construction safety accidents.

  • Safety is a big issue in the construction sites. For safe and secure management, tracking locations of construction resources such as labors, materials, machineries, vehicles and so on is important. The materials, machineries and vehicles could be controlled by computer, whereas the movement of labors does not have fixed pattern. So, the location and movement of labors need to be monitored continuously for safety. In general, Global Positioning System(GPS) is an opt solution to obtain the location information in outside environments. But it cannot be used for indoor locations as it requires a clear Line-Of-Sight(LOS) to satellites Therefore, indoor location monitoring system could be a convenient alternative for environments such as tunnel and indoor building construction sites. This paper presents a case study to investigate feasibility of Wi-Fi based indoor location monitoring system in construction site. The system is developed by using fingerprint map of gathering Received Signal Strength Indication(RSSI) from each Access Point(AP). The signal information is gathered by Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags, which are attached on a helmet of labors to track their locations, and is sent to server computer. Experiments were conducted in a shield tunnel construction site at Guangzhou, China. This study consists of three phases as follows: First, we have a tracking test in entrance area of tunnel construction site. This experiment was performed to find the effective geometry of APs installation. The geometry of APs installation was changed for finding effective locations, and the experiment was performed using one and more tags. Second, APs were separated into two groups, and they were connected with LAN cable in tunnel construction site. The purpose of this experiment was to check the validity of group separating strategy. One group was installed around the entrance and the other one was installed inside the tunnel. Finally, we installed the system inner area of tunnel, boring machine area, and checked the performance with varying conditions (the presence of obstacles such as train, worker, and so on). Accuracy of this study was calculated from the data, which was collected at some known points. Experimental results showed that WiFi-based indoor location system has a level of accuracy of a few meters in tunnel construction site. From the results, it is inferred that the location tracking system can track the approximate location of labors in the construction site. It is able to alert the labors when they are closer to dangerous zones like poisonous region or cave-in..

  • Building information modeling (BIM) can help to visualize and manage the building-related information at the object-based level, and it is possible to help link the tasks in the network of Hanok construction. While many studies have significant interest in using BIM for modern construction, there is only few studies to observe the use of BIM for traditional construction, commonly called Hanok construction in South Korea. Hence, the main goal of this study is to develop a system dynamic model for investigating how the BIM can be widely used for Hanok construction. To this end, this study identified the factors influencing the BIM uses for the Hanok construction, developed a causal loop diagram (CLD) to investigate the interrelationships among the factors, and provided a final model based on the mathematical definitions. Based on the scenario analysis, it is demonstrated that the support to building Hanok and education cost for BIM positively influence activating and using the BIM for the Hanok construction. Based on the dynamics of the factors identified in this study, it is important to consider expanding support for Hanok construction and education cost for BIM to successfully integrate and utilize BIM in the construction industry.

  • We investigated the characteristics of the overflow/wave overtopping, induced by the storm surge and high waves in Masan bay and Busan Coast during Typhoon 'Maemi', which landed at the southeast coast of the Korean peninsula on September, of 2003, causing a severe inundation disaster. Characteristics of the water level, increase by the overflow / wave overtopping, were discussed in two patterns. One is the increase of water level in the region, located inside of a bay, like Masan fishing port, and the waves are relatively small. The other is in the open sea, in which the waves act directly, as on the seawall in Suyong bay. In the former region, the water level increase was affected by the storm surge, as well as the long period oscillation and waves. In Masan fishing port, about $80\%$ of the water level increase on the quay wall was caused by the storm surge. In the latter one, it was greatly affected by the wave run-up. In Suyong bay, about $90\%$ of the water level increase on the seawall was caused by the wave run-up.

  • As the tideland reclamation is done on a large scale these days, construction work is active in the coastal areas. Facilities in the coastal areas must be built with the tide characteristics taken into consideration. Thus the tide characteristics affect the overall reclamation plan. The analysis of the tide data boils down to a harmonic analysis of the hourly changes of long-term tide data and extraction of unharmonic coefficients from the results. Since considerable amount of tide data of the West Coast are available, the existing data can be collected and can be used to obtain the temporal changes of the tide by being fitted into the tide prediction model. The goal of this thesis lies in assessing whether the mean sea level used in the field agrees with the analysis results from the long-term observation data obtained with their homogeneity guaranteed. To achieve this goal, the research was conducted as follows. First the present conditions of the observation stations, the land level standard, and the sea level standard were analyzed to set up a time series model formula for representing them. To secure the homogeneity of the time series, each component was separated. Lastly the mean sea level used in the field was assessed based on the results obtained form the analysis of the time series.

  • As building information modeling (BIM) is expanding its influence in various fields of architecture, engineering, construction and facility management (AEC-FM) industry, BIM-based automated code compliance checking has become possible prospects. For the automated code compliance checking, requirements in building code need to be processed into explicit representation that enables automated reasoning. This paper aims to develop high-level methods that translate verb phrases into explicit representation. The high-level methods represent conditions, properties, and related actions of the building objects and clarify the core content of the constraints. The authors analyze building permit requirements in Korea Building Code and establish a standardized process of deriving the high-level methods. As a result, 60 kinds of the high-level methods were derived. In addition, method classification, analysis, and application are introduced. This study will contribute to the representation of explicit building code sentences and establishment of the automated building permit system of Korea.
