This study investigated the effect of horizontal casting joints on the mechanical properties and structural behavior of sustainable self-compacting reinforced concrete beams (SCRCB). The experimental research consisted of two stages. The first stage used four types of concrete mixtures which were produced to indicate the effects of cement replaced with cement waste at 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% by weight of cement content on fresh concrete properties of self-compacting concrete (SCC) such as, passing ability, filling ability, and segregation resistance. In addition, mechanical properties such as compressive, tensile, and flexural strength were also studied. The second stage selected the best mixture from the first stage and studied the effect of horizontal casting joints on the structural behavior of sustainable SCRCBs. The effect of horizontal casting joints on the mechanical properties and structural behavior were at the 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% of sample height. Load deflection, failure mode, and theoretical analysis were studied. Results indicated that the incorporation of replacement with cement waste by 5% to 10% led to economic and environmental advantages, and the results were acceptable for fresh and mechanical properties. The results indicated that delaying the time for casting the second layer and increasing the cement waste in concrete mixtures had a great effect on the mechanical properties of SCC. The ultimate load capacity of horizontal casting joints reinforced concrete beams slightly decreased compared with the control beam. The maximum deflection of casting joint beams with 75% of samples height is similar with the control beam. The experimental results of reinforced concrete beams were substantially acceptable with the theoretical results. The failure modes obtained the best forced casting joint on the structural behavior at 50% height of casting in the beam.
The conception and experimental assessment of a removable friction-based shear connector (FBSC) for precast steel-concrete composite bridges is presented. The FBSC uses pre-tensioned high-strength steel bolts that pass through countersunk holes drilled on the top flange of the steel beam. Pre-tensioning of the bolts provides the FBSC with significant frictional resistance that essentially prevents relative slip displacement of the concrete slab with respect to the steel beam under service loading. The countersunk holes are grouted to prevent sudden slip of the FBSC when friction resistance is exceeded. Moreover, the FBSC promotes accelerated bridge construction by fully exploiting prefabrication, does not raise issues relevant to precast construction tolerances, and allows rapid bridge disassembly to drastically reduce the time needed to replace any deteriorating structural component (e.g., the bridge deck). A series of 11 push-out tests highlight why the novel structural details of the FBSC result in superior shear load-slip displacement behavior compared to welded shear studs. The paper also quantifies the effects of bolt diameter and bolt preload and presents a design equation to predict the shear resistance of the FBSC.
The concrete inside the steel tube of CFT columns enables them to have great strength and ductility. CFT columns are also excellent in fire-resistance because explosive heat upon a fire can be contained in the tube by the concrete debris. However, the studies to evaluate the residual strength of CFT columns after a fire have not been conducted enough. The studies to evaluate the residual strength of CFT columns after a fire are indispensable because it is the barometer of the damage of composite columns caused by a fire and the degree of repair and reinforcement work for the columns after a fire. Accordingly, the purpose of this study is to evaluate the deterioration of load capacity and structural behavior of square CFT columns with the same shapes and boundary conditions before and after a fire. The study also evaluates the influential factors of the CFT columns reinforced to secure the residual strength after a fire.
The purpose of this research is to investigate the effect of AFm formation on the stiffening process of cement paste. High and low alkali sulfate clinkers were used for the experiments. The flow and stiffening behavior of cement paste was investigated using modified ASTM C403 penetration resistance test and oscillatory shear rheology. X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) was used for phase identification associated with stiffening of the paste. It was found from the results that low alkali clinker mixture produced very strong premature stiffening whereas high alkali clinker mixture did not cause premature stiffening. This is because of the large amount of alkali sulfate present in the clinker. Addition of calcium and sodium chloride to the high alkali clinker mixture caused faster stiffening and set.
Repair and rehabilitation of existing structures is becoming a major part of construction, both in the industrially developed and developing countries. Advanced high strength composites are being utilized more and more for these applications because they are much stronger than steel, non-corrosive, and light. The light weight reduces the construction cost and time sustantially. The fibers are normally made of aramid, carbon, or glass and the binders are typically epoxies or esters. One major disadvantage of these composites is the vulnerability to fire. In most instance, the temperature cannot exceed $300^{\cire}C$. Since carbon and glass can substain high temperatures, an inorganic polymer is being evaluated for use as a matrix. The matrix can sustain more than $1000^{\cire}C$. The results reported in this paper deal with the mechanical properties of carbon composites made with the inorganic polymer and the behavior strengthened reinforced concrete beams. The results indicate that the new matrix can be successfully utilized for a number of applications.

The Hyogoken-Nambu Earthquake of January 17, 1995 inflicted severe damage in the Hanshin and Awaji areas such as has never been seen in Japan in recent years. The safety inspections of the dams conducted in the area by site offices and dam experts immediately after the earthquake showed that there was no damage affecting the safety of the dams although slight damage was observed in several dams. The investigation also revealed that the peak accelerations at dam sites were much smaller than those at soil sites. The Ministry of construction organized the Committee on Evaluattion of Earthquake Resistance of Dams after the earthquake. The Committee confirmed through dynamic analysis that the dams designed in accordance with the present design criteria in Japan are safe under the magnitude of shaking that occurred close the source fault of the Hyogoken-Nambu Earthquake.

The resistance of the linepipe steel to hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC) and sulfide stress cracking (SSC) is very important for steel to be used in sour oil/gas environments. Welding of steels is necessary to the construction of pipe-line transporting oil/gas. In this study, HIC and SSC resistance of an electric resistance welded (ERW) steel plate which belongs to API X70 grade was evaluated by using NACE TM0284-96A and NACE TM0177-96A methods. HIC and SSC fracturing behavior was investigated by observing fractured surfaces using optical microscopy (OM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). It was discussed in terms of metallurgical parameters such as the distribution of primary microstructure, second phases and inclusions. Results showed that the weld joint of ERW steel is more sensitive than base metal to HIC and SSC. This is due to difference in the contribution of metallurgical parameters to HIC and SSC nucleation and propagation.
Structures subjected to strong seismic excitation may undergo inelastic deformation cycles. The resulting cumulative fatigue damage process reduces the ability of structures and components to withstand seismic loads. Yet, the present earthquake resistance design methods focus mainly on the maximum displacement ductility, ignoring the effect of the cyclic responses. The damage parameters closely related to the cumulative damage need to be properly reflected on the aseismic design methods. In this study, two cumulative damage assessment methods derived from the plastic fatigue theory are investigated. The one is based on the hysteretic ductility amplitude, and the other is based on the dissipated hysteretic energy. Both methods can consider the maximum ductility and the cyclic behavior of structural response. The validity of two damage methods has been examined for single degree of freedom structures with various natural frequencies against two different earthquake excitations.
