Since the designation of the South Korean Construction industry as an open market industry by the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 1994, South Korea's construction firms were exposed to competition from firms of other advanced countries. Increased competition in the industry raised quality of production and lowered the cost of construction projects. Therefore, many big construction projects were planned and constructed with foreign construction partners during the last decade. Also, from those projects the South Korea Construction industry accumulated experience in and knowledge of both project management and construction management perspectives. However, in the process of conducting those big projects, many problems - specifically responsibility and the limit of competence - occurred between foreign construction partners. Hence, this study attempts to improve its role model that is for local and foreign companies to enter into Joint Ventures in the South Korea construction industry.

At the moment, construction industry has negative images such as faulty construction, 3D industry and corruption/bribe and they are being projected onto normal people and those engaged in the industry through various news media. Not only does this worsen the lack of skilled manpower by affecting high school students who will be responsible for the construction industry in the future but also makes the future of the industry uncertain by promoting the avoidance of industrial jobs. Therefore, this study suggested basic data for improving the images of construction industry by investigating interest and images of workers in the industry that high school students think as promising construction manpower, and extracting the present negative images through evaluation of associated images.

Pipe joining is one of the most critical aspects of most industrial projects, but it is regarded as one of the most inefficient processes in the construction industry. The primary objective of this paper is to explore the applicability of advanced joining technology to the use of metal pipe in the construction industry. This paper begins with a review of current practices with respect to metal joining in the construction industry. The current status of pipe joining is examined. Needs for, and benefits of, advanced joining technology are identified, and a tool for evaluating the applicability of various methods to construction is presented. Joining technologies, including mechanical joining, adhesive bonding, welding, and welding automation, are then introduced, and their applicability to the construction industry is assessed by means of this evaluation tool. It is concluded that there is significant benefits for improvement of piping process in the construction industry through the use of advanced joining technologies.

This paper presents 10 input measures influencing project outcomes. Construction Industry Institute (CII), a consortium of more than 130 project owner and contractor companies, has collected project-level data for over 20 years. Recently, CII has developed a new system measuring project-level performance and factors presumably influencing project performance. The system, called 10-10, collects data for 10 input and 10 output measures for capital projects. The input measures include planning, organizing, leading, controlling, design efficiency, human resources, quality, sustainability, supply chain, and safety. This paper provides theoretical background for these measures. Although the input measures have been known to impact on project outcomes such as cost and schedule, there has been no study quantitatively evaluating how they are operated in the construction industry. This study contributes to revealing the current status of their uses, which will be helpful in establishing strategies improving construction project performance.

Currently, the construction industry is decreasing every year due to people's poor perception, high labor intensity, unstable employment structure, and welfare problems, as people avoid entry. Accordingly, this study investigated how to attract trainees and graduates from domestic construction education institutions to the construction industry. If institutional devices are prepared to prepare for the future by improving the welfare system such as unemployment benefits and retirement deductions in the construction industry, many trainees in their 20s and 30s will be attracted to the construction industry. If it helps expand hands-on education through on-site linkage and has the necessary technical skills for practice, it is believed that trainees and graduates in their 4s and 60s will be attracted to the construction industry.

Korea construction industry needs to secure its competitiveness in global construction markets and to urgently find out the proper approaches in consideration of the current situation of Korean construction enterprises and environmental changes in the international market. Korea has national plan to improve the competitive level of the construction industry. Expecially, Government is trying to build the global system in construction industry. But there are no the related national competitive date. Therefore, this paper suggested national competitive indicators and development direction in construction industry. And this research has presented the competitiveness analysis of construction industry with the consideration of condition of infrastructure, transparency and technological competitiveness.

The construction industry has a higher dependency on manpower than other industries, requiring a supply of high quality skilled workers. But negative perceptions regarding the construction industry have continued to reduce the inflow of young workers into the industry, and the existing skilled workforce is aging. In response, as a solution for training young construction skilled manpower, training programs for young construction skilled workers have been implemented by specialized high schools. But the current status of career paths chosen by the graduates of these specialized high schools did not show a substantial influx of workers into the construction industry. In this regard, with the purpose of promoting an influx of young construction skilled manpower into the industry, this study analyzed the goals and problems of construction education in specialized high schools in South Korea, and suggested a method for improvement.

국내 건설업은 국민 생활과 국가 산업의 기반 시설을 제공하고 있는 중요한 산업이다. 하지만 건설업의 이미지는 부정적으로 나타나고 있는 것이 현실이다. 건설업 이미지를 개선하기 위한 연구는 모두 당시의 이미지를 토대로 수행되었다는 한계를 가지고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 시간 경과에 따라 일반 국민들이 건설업에 대해 가지고 있는 이미지가 어떻게 변화하였는지 비교분석하였다. 비교분석 결과 국가경제 기여도, 장래성에 관한 이미지는 긍정적인 면이 줄어든 것으로 나타났으며, 도덕성 측면에 관한 이미지는 부정적인 면이 감소된 것으로 나타났다. 이를 토대로 건설업 이미지 향상을 위한 개선 전략을 제시하였다.

As the world construction market is rearranged by the level of technological capability, recently the technological capability in construction industry is developing rapidly. The important of measuring and analyzing technological capability in construction industry is gaining more and more emphasis. It enables to grasp the past and present situation of construction industry as well as to foresee changes in the future. However the concept of technological capability cannot be identified easily, as well as it is hard to compare that capability of construction industry among different countries. Although there have been numerous studies conducted on the technological capability of construction industry, most of the studies were in formsof surveys of specialists or industry professionals which lacked objectivity and sound basis for data. This study will be focused on investigating the methodology in exploiting and measuring surface of the earth and developing indicator and process to understand technological capability in construction industry through quantitative and statistical analysis. Then it will verify them through a case study.

With the current global financial crisis, Korea's economic situation involves a great deal of uncertainty. As the construction industry in Korea has traditionally been one of the country's strongest engines of economic development, it is crucial to understand its current status when establishing government policy or corporate goals. Utilizing a variety of statistical data related to construction that has been published in Korea, this study analyzes the current status and performance of the industry in terms of technological development. Although it was found that the construction industry in Korea is currently unstable due to the influence of the global financial crisis, it is now expected to recover quickly thanks to the increase in the number of construction contracts in foreign countries. In addition, when the performance of national research and development is realized, it is expected that new construction technologies will contribute to the recovery of the Korean construction industry. Despite the benefits of construction contracts in foreign countries, there are harmful practices in the industry that need to be addressed, including the excessively fierce competition among domestic construction companies.
