  • Kunjung-mun Gate the only existing multi-level palace gate from the Chosun Dynasty, is the main fate of Kungjung-jun, the central building of Kyungbok-koong Palace. Sangryangmun(a written record of the construction of the ridge beam) of Kunjung-mun Gate was discovered in a hole under its main beam during the renovation project on September 19th, 2000. At the time of discovery, Sangryangmun was found in its original state as a rolled up scroll. On a clould-patterned, red silk cloth, 78 cm in width and 1200 cm in length, each of all 92 lines of the Kunjung-mun Sangryangmun is comprised of either 7 or 11 brush-written, ornamental "Seal" characters. With an exception of its discoloration, the material is considered well preserved. After its discovery, the National Institute of Cultural Properties stored the document in an airtight container for a permanent preservation. In accordance to the Royal Command at the time, the Kunjung-mun Sangryangmun was composed by Kim Byungi, then written by Lee Donsang on January 19th 1867. • In the EPC(Engineering Procurement and Construction) project of the plant, procurement engineering has a profound effect on the profitability of the project. It is important that the procurement specifications are well written to ensure that procurement engineering works properly. In the meantime, the procurement specifications have been created by the experience of the person in charge because there was no system for helping procurement engineering. To cope with this situation, we are developing a procurement engineering management support system (PeMSS). This paper describes how to implement a knowledge-based service in the procurement engineering management support system. First, we briefly introduce the PeMSS, the knowledge base application field, and how to apply it. The parts that requires knowledge-based service are parsing the requirements in the PDF (Portable Document Format) file and management of the document provided by the supplier of the equipment.

  • Claims in the construction industry can have a serious impact on the profitability of the project or can even result in project failure if it fails to take appropriate prevention. In order to properly prevent and respond to the potential claims and legal disputes throughout the project execution, it is necessary to continuously accumulate informations and clearly define the roles and responsibilities of the important activities systematically. Based on these needs, this study develops and verifies the project information management system(PMIS) that can prevent and respond possible claims for construction projects. Developed system includes such management modules as schedule, cost, PM/CM, design, collaboration, and claims. The system was validated by adopting it to the practical projects. The results showed that information systems tailored to the construction claim need to elevate users' familiarity to be more useful. Besides, the system can be more functional when used by both owners and contractors.

  • When Building Information Modeling (BIM) was introduced at the early stage, it was only utilized as a three-dimensional visualization tool. Nowadays, however, BIM is being studied for increasing design productivity and managing enormous information on building life cycle. One of the representative research is developing 'common prototype BIM libraries'. BIM data made of common prototype libraries should be utilized in various ways, quantity takeoff, code checking, energy analysis and so on. However, common prototype BIM libraries are not enough to estimate accurate cost. For example, composite wall libraries should be divided into several single objects, wall structure and finishes, for the quantity takeoff and construction cost calculation. In this paper, we are suggesting an automated division algorithm of composite wall and developing a system prototype for it. This study is expected to reduce extra modeling work and contribute to fast and accurate cost calculation in the construction.

  • The domestic and foreign specifications presented the effective width based on flange length to width ratio only. The existing paper on the effective width grasped of the effect of span, load type and cross-section properties, but localized steel bridges. Recently, The studies are going on in progress for the application of fiber reinforced composite material in construction field. Therefore, it is required to optimum design that have a good grasp the deformation characteristic of the displacements and stresses distribution and predict variation of the effective width for serviceability loading. This research addresses the effective width of all composite material box girder bridges using the finite element method. The characteristics of the effective width of composite structures may vary according to several causes, e.g., change of fibers, aspect, etc. Parametric studies were conducted to determine the effective width on the stress elastic analysis of all composite materials box bridges, with interesting observations. The various results through numerical analysis will present an important document for construct all composite material bridges.

  • The main thrust of our talk will be based on our experience in developing and applying an attribute-based classification technique in the context of an operational answer set driven retrieval system. To alleviate the difficulty and reduce the cost of manually constructing and maintaining answer sets, i.e., knowledge base, we have devised a new method of automating the answer document selection process by using the notion of attribute-based classification, which is in and of itself novel. We attempt to explain through experiments how helpful the proposed method is for the knowledge base construction process.

  • In the inner turn key constructions the problems of uniform types are repeatedly occurred, and, especially, many problems happen up to the stage of pre-construction(from a bid to a contract) owing to the specialties of the turn key constructions. So the claim factors of the Korean turn key constructions were abstracted through the literature searches, the site document examinations, the case studies and the interviews with the experts. When the technicians meeting the interior turn key constructions for the first time and working here now are well acquainted with only these factors, many claims will be prevented. By analysing the degree of claims by claims factors through the questionnaires to the experts about the abstracted factors and surveying the amount of the claims through the case studies, what factors exerted how much of influence on the claims was tested and analyzed. Proposing the response devices to the factors affecting the claims much led the technicians in charge of internal turn key constructions to the prevention and the proper solution of the site claims.

  • Recently, there have been increasing studies on the application of digital technology, which has its focus of the irregular building. However, most of these studies have not clarified the objective of the technology and the effectiveness of professional manpower on its performance. This study analyzes actual used technology and the role of specialty contractor. It presents a framework to quantify the performance of the specialty contractor. For these purposes, this paper presents a proposed method to evaluate the activities of specialty contractors using a queueing model. As an attempt to verify the model, an actual irregular building project, in which digital fabrication is applied, is investigated during the construction phase. In order to collect the digital fabrication data, digital fabrication reports and specialty contractor's work log of project are reviewed. In addition, Digital Fabrication input personnel, productivity data are collected through interviews with experts involving in the case project. Analysis of specialty contractor's performance in digital fabrication reveals that the wait status of project participants varies probabilistically depending on the digital technology application level. The results of this study are expected to contribute toward the improvement of the production level in the construction industry.

  • This paper presents an automated computer vision-based system to update BIM data by leveraging multi-modal visual data collected from existing buildings under inspection. Currently, visual inspections are conducted for building envelopes or mechanical systems, and auditors analyze energy-related contextual information to examine if their performance is maintained as expected by the design. By translating 3D surface thermal profiles into energy performance metrics such as actual R-values at point-level and by mapping such properties to the associated BIM elements using XML Document Object Model (DOM), the proposed method shortens the energy performance modeling gap between the architectural information in the as-designed BIM and the as-is building condition, which improve the reliability of building energy analysis. Several case studies were conducted to experimentally evaluate their impact on BIM-based energy analysis to calculate energy load. The experimental results on existing buildings show that (1) the point-level thermography-based thermal resistance measurement can be automatically matched with the associated BIM elements; and (2) their corresponding thermal properties are automatically updated in gbXML schema. This paper provides practitioners with insight to uncover the fundamentals of how multi-modal visual data can be used to improve the accuracy of building energy modeling for retrofit analysis. Open research challenges and lessons learned from real-world case studies are discussed in detail.
