  • Cracks, which account for the largest proportion of defect lawsuits in apartment buildings, are not clear on the criteria for defect determination, so judgments about defects are mixed. Interlayer cracks, which account for most of the crack defect judgment amount, tend to be judged as defects regardless of the crack width or condition, and repair methods are mostly set uniformly. This starts from the problem that the standards of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the Construction Appraisal Practice, which the courts use as standards, do not match. It is necessary to establish a defect determination standard that can be applied to all stakeholders through the amendment of laws and the revision of the Court Appraisal Practice. In addition, it is necessary to apply the crack repair method according to the width and condition of the interlayer crack. If the defect determination and the application of the repair method for cracks are rationalized, it could serve as an opportunity to change the current trend of defect disputes that rely only on litigation.

  • The degradation and damage of the components for ballasted track could be caused a serious problem for railway safety. Therefore, the integrity evaluation of ballasted track condition is important to ensure and predict that the track safety and track maintenance. Various track components such as rail pad, ballast, sleeper, and rail that are widely used in Republic of Korea and represent a range of physical properties have been selected for this research. In this study, the experimental modal analysis was performed by the non-destructive testing. Modal test results were obtained from the field test and used to assess the condition of the track components. From the field test, the system of ballasted track was found to be simplified as a two-degree-of-freedom(2DOF) dynamic system. The condition of track component was found to directly affect the dynamic response of ballasted tracks. As the results, the dynamic properties of the track component was depend on the track condition and was distributed more roughly and over a wider range than its initial design values. Further, the methodology presented in this study is possible to determine experimentally the fundamental track parameters which are required in the numerical analysis, and also are useful for the safety assessment of track condition.

  • Today's human life is more conveniently advantaged and abundant as industrial society advanced. However, the development has been creating a serious environmental crisis. Environmental pollution and exhaustion of natural resources recently became an important issue in construction industry as well as the concern about construction waste management and recycling the resources has arisen. Because the industrial wastes are not only increased quantitatively but also qualitatively intricate and various, groping for ways of reducing the use of resources primarily and recycling is urged on promotion. Currently, only about 33% of the wood wastes produced in construction site are recycled and the others are incinerated or disposed through irregular circulation process. In this study, I will investigate the present status of generating, processing, and recycling construction wood wastes and compare domestic disposal trend to other countries. In addition, I will analyze the actual condition of processing wood wastes in the construction site, verify the irrational causes, and simplify anomalous factors for the purpose of more efficient and correct activation of wood waste treatment and recycling on construction field and protection of environment in the long run.

  • GS E&C was awarded the contract for the construction of Hanoi - Hai Phong Expressway Package EX-7 from Station Km 72+000 to Station Km 81+300 in December 2008. This project is the $7^{th}$ contract package of the 105.5 km long expressway near Hai Phong city, which includes a FCM-styled bridge along with high embankments over soft ground. For these high embankments, there is a need to treat the soft soil for improving the overall stability during construction and for reducing the post-construction settlement of the expressway. The Designer of this project had adopted four (4) different types of ground improvement techniques to treat the soft ground, including the prefabricated vertical drains (PVD), sand drains (SD), pack drains (PD, or sometimes called packed sand drains), and sand compaction piles (SCP). The main focus of soft soil treatment should be paid attention to the residual settlement after construction. In current design, however, it appeared that the secondary compression (or creep) of the improved soil layer and the consolidation settlement of the lower untreated compressible soil layer have been neglected in the estimation of the post-construction settlement. These uncalculated residual settlements may not only unsatisfy the design criteria but also raise serious problems during service period of this expressway. In this paper, the subsoil condition and current design were reviewed focusing on the employed soft soil treatment method and expected residual settlement.

  • The changes in business structure of domestic construction companies suggest that there is a close relationship between the volume of overseas project and a company's financial condition. Based on this assumption, this study conducts an empirical analysis on a relationship between overseas project and financial stability of a construction company. The ratio of liquidity and liability was used as liquidity index and stability index respectively. The analysis was based on quarterly time-series data between 2000 and 2010. Two models were constructed for the analysis: Model 1 was based on the liquidity ratio and the amount of domestic and overseas construction project; Model 2 was based on the debt ratio and the amount of domestic and overseas construction project. The analysis results showed that the increasing amount of overseas project facilitated short-term financing with greater liquidity, and yet it was not very effective in lowering the debt ratio. This suggests that the dramatic increase in overseas construction project, which is observed recently, is not entirely an optimistic sign.

  • Recently, BIM (Building Information Modeling) technique is being considered as a critical delivery condition for the public projects according to the increase of best practices by practical application of BIM. However, since existing BIM studies are focused on the design and construction phases, those results are not considering the life cycle of a construction project. Therefore, this study suggests an integrated BIM operation process that enables an application of BIM for each phase of a construction project from planning to maintenance phases and develops an integrated BIM system based on the suggested methodologies. This study developed basic BIM functions and its application process by analyzing information systems in each project phase for a bridge construction project. Besides, this study performed case study and survey analysis for construction managers to verify a practical applicability of the developed system. Therefore, it is expected that the integrated BIM system is going to be utilized as a 3D-based integrated information management system considering life cycle of construction projects.

  • The reclamation area of Saemangeum (Kunsan) located between 126$^{\circ}$10' -126$^{\circ}$50'E and and 35$^{\circ}$35'N -36$^{\circ}$05'N at the western coast of Korea. The construction of the 33km sea dike is building in the Saemangeum area. When the construction of the sea dike in the coastal region takes plase, there exists a certain amount of soil which is diffused by the tidal current. Behavior of the soil diffusion usually depends on its intrinsic characteristics, bathymetry, construction method and used mchinery. The amount of soil at the construction acts as a pollutant which is the cause of changing the marine environment. When the soil material is diffused , it may form a layer which obstructs the light passing into the sea and causes the extinction or alteration of the living beings on the sea bottom. The settlement of soil material could change the sea bottom deposit. The purpose of MITIGATION is to harmonize the development and the conservation of environment, to restrict environmental destruction and to reproduce the enviroment damaged by the construction in the coastal region. The purpose of this study is to find the method by which we minimize the anti-function of development in the coastal region. Tide and tidal current are calculated using a two-dimensional numerical model before the construction of sea dike in Saemangeum Bay. The numerical results are compared well with field observations. On the basis of these results, we caculated the tide and tidal current after the construction of the sea dike in order to investigate the change of the tide and tidal current after the construction of the sea dike. Moreover, we calculated the tide and tidal current after the construction of submerged breakwater in order to preserve the enviornmental condition of creature habitat . We compared the tide and tidal current before and after the construction of submerbed breakwater, to investigate the possbility of MITIGATION in the fisheries.

  • Mechanization and automation constitute an essential stage in the production and operation of any company, as one of the determinants of increase in labor productivity and decrease in product price, while significantly contributing to shortening of the lead time. Businesses are, therefore, able to quickly put projects into operation, improving economic efficiency, quality, and aesthetics, which speeds up the national economic growth. For the construction industry to be the most effective, modern construction equipment is a necessity. It is one of the five main resources of a construction project. Thus, effective construction equipment management contributes to the success of a project and benefits the relevant construction companies economically. This paper presents the critical risk factors affecting equipment management and proposes suitable solutions. The questionnaire-based survey with experienced experts in the construction sector on the management of the likelihood and consequence of risk factors revealed thirty-two risks for equipment management in construction companies. These factors fell into six groups: (i) site organization-related risks; (ii) management-related risks; (iii) owner-related risks; (iv) supplier-related risks; (v) legal risks, and (vi) site condition-related and external risks. The results showed that management-related factors contributed to the most significant risks and problems for equipment management in construction companies.

  • As increase of the land price at downtown area, it makes people more and more interested of improving the space utilization such as makes buildings bigger, deeper and higher. Therefore, the importance of the underground construction which is the basic principle has been increased. As constructors have to complete underground construction as soon as possible with the minimum costs, they concentrate on the whole process of underground structure. Although they makes every these efforts, construction failure still happen because of the uncertainty of the condition of soil and the unexpected danger of underground construction. To make matter worse, there are only some examples without detailed information like 'how much this breakdown damage to the construction?' so it is the anther problem that most of people doesn't recognize the economical negative impact of underground structure breakdown. This report would make people understood the importance and risk of the underground construction by showing some analysis which was assumed from the real accidents.
