The Government is trying to increase total food grain yield to meet national self sufficiency by means of increasing unit yield as well as extending crop land, and this year he set the target of 321,000 hectare of forest to clear for cropping. This study was carried to investigate the most efficient method of clearing hillock by bulldozer, and successful method to develope yielding potential of newly cleared land in short term. Since the conventional land clearing method is just earth leveling and root removing neglecting top soil treatment, the growth of crop was poor and farmer tends not to care the land. The top-soil-furrowing method is applied through out this study, that is advantageous especially for the land having shallow top soil and low fertility like Korean forest. In this study, various operating method were tried to find out most efficient method separately in connection with the land slope less than 25 percent and over, and several fertilizing methods to develop yielding potential. The results are as follows; 1) For the natural land slope utilization method, applicable to the land having less than 25 percent slope, reverse operating was more efficient than using forward gear of bulldozer. The operating time was 3 hour 32 minutes and 36 seconds using forward gear was 2 hour 32 minutes and 30 seconds for reverse gear operation per 1,000 square meter. 2) Bulldozer having angle blade adjustment needed 7hr 15min. for constructing of terrace per 10a compaire with the one having angle & tilt adjustment needed 6hr 4min for same operations. Specially there is significant difference for operation time of first period (earth cutting) such as bulldozer having angle blade adjustment needed 3hr 56min compaired with the one having angle & tilt adjustment 3hr 59min. In construction of terrace, the bull-dozer having tilting and angle blade adjustment was most suitable and performed efficiently. 3) For the fertilizer application treatment, the grass (Ladino clover) yield in first year was almost same as ordinary field's in the plot applied(N.P.K+lime+manure) while none fertilizer plot showed one tenth of it, and (N.P.K.+lime) applied plot yielded on third. 4) The effect of different land clearing method to yield showed significant difference between each treatment especially in the first year, and the conventional method was the lowest. In the second year, still conventional terracing plot yielded only half of ordinary field while the other plots showed as same as ordinary field's. 5) The downward top soil treatment plot showed most rapid improvement in soil structure during one year physio chemically, it showed increase in pH rate and organic composition, and the soil changed gradually from loam to sand-loam and the moisture content increased against the pF rate, and it gives good condition to grow hay due to the increase of field water capacity with higher available water content. 6) Since the soil of tested area was granite, the rate of soil errosion was increased about 2 to 5 percent influencing in soil structure more sand reducing clay content, and an optimum contour farming method should be prepared as a counter measure of errosion.
An analytical procedure for calculating the failure load of a V-shaped rock notch under two-dimensional stress conditions was developed based on the slip-line plastic analysis method. The key idea utilized in the development is the fact that the α-line, one of the slip-lines, extends from the rock notch surface to the horizontal surface outside the notch when the rock around the notch is in the plastic state, and that there exists an invariant which is constant along the α-line. Since the stress boundary condition of the horizontal surface outside the rock notch is known, it is possible to calculate the normal and shear stresses acting on the rock notch surface by solving the invariant equation. The notch failure load exerted by the wedge was calculated using the calculated stress components for the notch surface. Rock notch failure analysis was performed by applying the developed analytical procedure. The analysis results show that the failure load of the rock notch increases with exponential nonlinearity as the angle of the notch and the friction of the notch surface increase. The analytical procedure developed in this study is expected to have applications to the study of fracture initiation in rocks through wedge-shaped notch formation, calculation of bearing capacity of the rock foundation, and stability analysis of rock slopes and circular tunnels.

PURPOSES : A composite pavement utilizes both an asphalt surface and a concrete base. Typically, a concrete base layer provides structural capacity, while an asphalt surface layer provides smoothness and riding quality. This pavement type can be used in conjunction with rollercompacted concrete (RCC) pavement as a base layer due to its fast construction, economic efficiency, and structural performance. However, the service life and functionality of composite pavement may be reduced due to interfacial bond failure. Therefore, adequate interfacial bonding between the asphalt surface and the concrete base is essential to achieving monolithic behavior. The purpose of this study is to investigate the bond characteristics at the interface between asphalt (HMA; hot-mixed asphalt) and the RCC base. METHODS : This study was performed to determine the optimal type and application rate of tack coat material for RCC-base composite pavement. In addition, the core size effect, temperature condition, and bonding failure shape were analyzed to investigate the bonding characteristics at the interface between the RCC base and HMA surface. To evaluate the bond strength, a pull-off test was performed using different diameters of specimens such as 50 mm and 100 mm. Tack coat materials such as RSC-4 and BD-Coat were applied in amounts of 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, 0.9, and $1.1l/m^2$ to determine the optimal application rate. In order to evaluate the bond strength characteristics with temperature changes, a pull-off test was carried out at -15, 0, 20, and $40^{\circ}C$. In addition, the bond failure shapes were analyzed using an image analysis program after the pull-off tests were completed. RESULTS : The test results indicated that the optimal application rate of RSC-4 and BD-Coat were $0.8l/m^2$, $0.9l/m^2$, respectively. The core size effect was determined to be negligible because the bond strengths were similar in specimens with diameters of 50 mm and 100 mm. The bond strengths of RSC-4 and BD-Coat were found to decrease significantly when the temperature increased. As a result of the bonding failure shape in low-temperature conditions such as -15, 0, and $20^{\circ}C$, it was found that most of the debonding occurred at the interface between the tack coat and RCC surface. On the other hand, the interface between the HMA and tack coat was weaker than that between the tack coat and RCC at a high temperature of $40^{\circ}C$. CONCLUSIONS : This study suggested an optimal application rate of tack coat materials to apply to RCC-base composite pavement. The bond strengths at high temperatures were significantly lower than the required bond (tensile) strength of 0.4 MPa. It was known that the temperature was a critical factor affecting the bond strength at the interface of the RCC-base composite pavement.

It is difficult to predict the early-age cracks of strain restrained concrete members due to environmentally sensitive parameters. A new method is proposed to predict the cracks by test of autogenous deformation and self-induced restrained stress of specimens which simulates early-age crack state by hydration heat of the'Wall-On-Foundation'members. For this purpose, thermal analysis of entire structure considering the environmental condition is performed at first, and the specimens are set up where hydration heat was electronically controlled according to the analysis results. By measuring free deformation and force to compensate the autogenous strain including relaxation, feasibility of cracks can be estimated. The proposed method can predict the occurrence of cracks better than the material test of the early age concrete which has large variance. The method of this study is particularly useful when it is used as a preliminary experiments to predict the crack more precisely before full-scale concrete placement in construction of large structures.
In the present study, we examined biosorption characteristics of heavy metals onto the extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) produced by the purple nonsulfur photosynthetic bacteria Rhodopseudomonas sp. KH4, which was isolated from a stream in Anyang, Kyonggi-Do. When Cd (100 mg/L) and Cu (100 mg/L) were added to EPS (1.0 g/L) in the optimal condition (Cd; pH 8, Cu; pH 5, $40^{\circ}C$), 84.2 mg/L of Cd and 70.0 mg/L of Cu were adsorbed within 30 min and 10 min, respectively. When 100 mg/L of Cd and Cu were present as mixture, 16.8 mg/L of Cd and 48.7 mg/L of Cu were adsorbed at $25^{\circ}C$, pH 5. The maximum adsorption capacity determined by fitting Langmuir isotherms model was suitable for describing the biosorption of Cd (76.9 mg/g) and Cu (67.1 mg/g) by EPS. The neutral monosaccharide in the EPS determined by GC consisted of arabinose (2.4%), glucose (7.1%) and mannose (90.5%).
Purpose: With the ever-rising energy prices, thermal energy heavily consuming facilities of the agricultural sector such as commercialized greenhouses and large-scale Rice Processing Complexes (RPCs) need to cut down their energy cost if they must run profitable businesses continually. One possible way to reduce their energy cost is to utilize combustible agricultural by-products or low-price oil instead of light oil as the fuel for their boiler systems. This study aims to analyze the heavy oil combustion characteristics of a newly developed hot water boiler system that can use both rice husk and heavy oil as its fuel convertibly. Methods: Heavy oil combustion experiments were conducted in this study employing four fuel feed rates (7.6, 8.5, 9.5, 11.4 $l/h$) at a combustion furnace vacuum pressure of 500 Pa and with four combustion furnace vacuum pressures (375, 500, 625, 750 Pa) at fuel feed rates of 9.5 and 11.4 $l/h$. Temperatures at five locations inside the combustion furnace and 20 additional locations throughout the whole hot water boiler system were measured to ascertain the combustion characteristics of the heavy oil. From the temperature measurement data, the thermal efficiency of the system was calculated. Flue gas smoke density and concentrations of air-polluting components in the flue gas were also measured by a gas analyzer. Results: As the fuel feed rate or combustion furnace vacuum pressure increased, the average temperature in the combustion furnace decreased but the thermal efficiency of the system showed no distinctive change. On the other hand, the thermal efficiency of the system was inversely proportionally to the vacuum level in the furnace. For all experimental conditions, the thermal efficiency remained in the range of 80.1-89.6%. The CO concentration in the flue gas was negligibly low. The NO and $SO_2$ concentration as well as the smoke density met the legal requirements. Conclusions: Considering the combustion temperature characteristics, thermal efficiency, and flue gas composition, the optimal combustion condition of the system seemed to be either the fuel feed rate of 9.5 $l/h$ with a combustion furnace vacuum pressure of 375 Pa or a fuel feed rate of 11.4 $l/h$ with a furnace vacuum pressure between 500 Pa and 625 Pa.

On the basis of the topographic maps in the 1910's and 1990's and the classification map of Landsat TM satellite image photographed on Sept 1, 1996, the spatial distribution and the current situation concerning tidal flats in Korea were studied by measuring the area with GIS Arc/Info system and examining the regional condition required to develop the tidal flats. The results are as follow; The tidal flat resources in Korea cover an area of about 3800 square meters, including the reclaimed one since the 1910's. And they are widely distributed in the west coast of South Jeonla, Kyunggi bay, Asan bay, the south coast of South Jeonla, Kunsan bay, Chunsoo bay, and the coast of South Kyungsang and Pusan when put in the order from bigger area. Given the area under the construction at present, more than 50% of the tidal flats are reclaimed ones. The tidal flats are being developed especially in Kyunggi and Asan bays because they perfectly measure up to the conditions required. For Kunsan bay, a remarkably good supply system of the alluvial sedimentary materials and a favorable coastline requirement for the coast of the South Jeonla also contribute to the development of the tidal flats. In the case study of Kunsan bay, it was shown that the shape of the tidal flat is making a continuous change and the area is getting bigger in terms of the multi-temporal change of the tidal flat development. However, while in the first half of the 20th century, the increasing rate of the area was considered to be rather high, it is considerably lowered almost to a standstill in the latter half of the century.
The Nongso tomb of Sunchang was built in a relatively deep place; hence there was little damage from grave robbers. The tomb was completely filled with a large amount of charcoal, and therefore the wooden coffin was excavated in relatively good condition. On the basis of the structure of the tombs, excavated artifacts, and radiocarbon dating results, the tomb is estimated to be from between the late Goryeo and the early Joseon period. The wooden coffin excavated is double-layered structures consisting of an outer coffin and an inner coffin. The outside of the wooden coffin is thickly lacquered and decorated with yellow letters and white motifs. An analysis of the pigments' components revealed that the major component of the letters was gold (Au) and the major component of the motifs was silver (Ag). The coffin lacquer had three layers: a pigment layer, a yellowish-brown layer, and a black layer. The wooden bases of the coffins were painted with a black substance, such as soot, as mineral elements were not detected in the black layer. The yellowish-brown layer is presumed to be refined lacquer. From the analysis of the structure of the layers and pigments, we can estimate the method was adopted for making lacquer for wooden coffin. It is assumed that the method used gold leaf and gold powder. The form of the pigment and the internal structure are likely to be gold leaf, but the shape of the surface letters appears to have been formed using gold powder. This study will serve as important information for understanding lacquer making techniques at the time of the tombs' construction by confirming the making method through reproduction experiments using gold leaf and gold powder.

Based on the site characterization works in a low and intermediate level waste(LILW) repository site, the numerical simulations for groundwater flow were carried out in order to understand the groundwater flow system of repository site. To accomplish the groundwater flow modeling in the repository site, the discrete fracture network(DFN) model was constructed using the characteristics of fracture zones and background fractures. At result, the total 10 different hydraulic conductivity(K) fields were obtained from DFN model stochastically and K distributions of constructed mesh were inputted into the 10 cases of groundwater flow simulations in FEFLOW. From the total 10 numerical simulation results, the simulated groundwater levels were strongly governed by topography and the groundwater fluxes were governed by locally existed high permeable fracture zones in repository depth. Especially, the groundwater table was predicted to have several tens meters below the groundwater table compared with the undisturbed condition around disposal silo after construction of underground facilities. After closure of disposal facilities, the groundwater level would be almost recovered within 1 year and have a tendency to keep a steady state of groundwater level in 2 year.
This study is focused on characterization of the physio-chemical and mineralogical properties, investigation of their vertical changes in the tailing profile of the Guryoung mining area, classification of the profile into distinct zones, and condition conceptual model of physio-chemical conditions and phases-water relationships controlling the element behaviors in the tailings. The upper part of the groundwater is characterized by the high contents of $Fe_2O_3$ and $SO_3$ for whole rock analysis, low pH, and the occurrence of jarosite, schwertmannite and Fe-oxyhydroxide as the secondary mineral phases. The tailing profile can be divided into the covering soil, jarosite zone, Fe-sulfate zone, Fe-oxyhydroxide and gypsum-bearing pyrite zone, calcite-bearing pyrite zone, soil zone, and weathered zone on the based of the geochemical and mineralogical characteristics. The profile can be sampled into the oxidized zone and the carbonate-rich primary zone with the dramatic changes in pH and the secondary mineral phases. The conceptual model proposed for the tailing profile can be summarized that the oxidation of pyrite is the most important reaction controlling the changes in pH, the dissolution of the primary silicates and carbonates, the precipitation of secondary mineral phases, acid-neutralizing, and heavy metal behaviors through the profile.
