  • Given the constraint of the AC input power factor and the DC-link voltage and current ripple in voltage source inverter, minimizing the size and cost of the DC-link fitter components is very important. This paper presents a procedure for the selection of DC-link filler element values in a three-phase PWM voltage source inverter-fed induction motor drive system, which can not only satisfy the requirements for the system performance but also minimize the filter size.

  • This paper proposes a harmonic reduction approach for a pulse width modulation (PWM) AC-AC converters using Bee Colony Optimization (BCO). The optimal switching angles are provided by BCO to minimize harmonic distortions. The sequences of the PWM switching angles are considered as a technical constraint. In this paper, simulation results from various optimization techniques including BCO, Genetic Algorithm (GA), and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) are compared. The test results indicate that BCO can provide a better solution than the others in terms of power quality and power factor improvement. Lastly, experiments on a 200W AC-AC converter confirm the performance of the proposed switching pattern in reducing harmonic distortions of the output waveform.

  • This paper develops a direct torque control method (DTC) using a matrix converter fed induction motor. The advantages of matrix converters are combined with the advantages of the DTC technique; under the constraint of the unity input power factor, the required voltage vectors are generated to implement the conventional DTC method of induction motor. The proposed DTC algorithm is applied to induction motors and the experimental results are given in steady-state and transient conditions, while the discussion about the trend of the DTC method using the MC is also carried out. Furthermore, the entire system of the matrix converter configuration using 7.5kW IGBT module is explained in detail.

  • The homogenization method and the density function method are common approaches to evaluate the equivalent material properties for design cells composed of matter and void. In this research, using a new topology optimization method based on the homogenized material with a penalty factor and the chessboard prevention strategy, we obtain the optimal layout of a structure for the natural frequency of a designated mode. The volume fraction of nodes of each finite element is chosen as the design variable and a total material usage constraint is imposed. In this paper, the subspace method is used to evaluate the eigenvalue and its corresponding eigenvector of the structure for the designated mode and the recursive quadratic programming algorithm, PLBA algorithm, is used to solve the topology optimization problem.

  • If the camera plane is nearly parallel to the calibration board on which objects are defined, most of existing calibration approaches such as Tsai's radial-alignment-constraint method cannot be applied. Recently, for such an ill-conditioned case, Zhuang & Wu suggested the linear two-stage calibration algorithm assuming that the exact values of focal length and scale factor are known a priori. In this paper, we developed an iterative two-stage algorithm starts with initial guess fo the two parameters to determine the value of the others using Zhuang & Wu's method. In the second stage, the two parameters are locally optimized. This process is repeated until any improvement cannot be expected any more. The performance comparison between Zhuang & Wu's method and our algorithm shows the superiority of ours. Also included are the computational results for the effects of the distribution and the number of calibration points on the calibration performance.

  • Brittle materials such as glasses and ceramics, which are very weak under impact loading, show fragile failure mode due to their low fracture toughness and crack sensitivity. When brittle materials are subjected to impact by small spheres, high contact pressure occurs at the impacted surface causing local damage on the specimen. This damage is a dangerous factor in causing the final fracture of structures. In this research, the crack propagation process of soda-lime glass by the impact of small spheres is explained and the effects of several constraint conditions for impact damage were studied by using soda-lime glass; that is, the effects for the materials and sizes of impact ball, thickness of specimen and residual strength were evaluated. Especially, this research has focused on the damage behavior of ring cracks, cone cracks and several other kinds of cracks.

  • This paper present a new optimization model to generate aggregate production planning by considering electric cost. The new Time Of Switching (TOS) electric type is introduced by switching over Time Of Day (TOD) and Time Of Use (TOU) electric types to minimize the electric cost. The fuzzy demand and Dynamic inventory tracking with multiple plant capacity are modeled to cover the uncertain demand of customer. The constraint for minimum hour limitation of plant running per one start up event is introduced to minimize plants idle time. Furthermore; the Optimal Weight Moving Average Factor for customer demand forecasting is introduced by monthly factors to reduce forecasting error. Application is illustrated for multiple cement mill plants. The mathematical model was formulated in spreadsheet format. Then the spreadsheet-solver technique was used as a tool to solve the model. A simulation running on part of the system in a test for six months shows the optimal solution could save 60% of the actual cost.

  • The nondimensional differential equations governing the buckling loads of tapered columns and its houndarv conditions are derived, in which the effects of shear deformations are included. These equations are solved numerically using a numerical integration technique and a bracketing method to obtain the buckling loads of columns. Four types of cross-sectional shape with clamped-free end constraint are used in the numerical examples. The parametric studies of shear deformation effects on the buckling loads such as cross-sectional shape factor, shear coefficient, ratio of modulus of elasticity, slenderness ratio and section ratio are reported in tables and figures.

  • By DC load flow approximation, we analyzed marginal cost that is the important factor of price signal for network congestion management and expressed as a function of load. In network congestion, a large scale electric network is partitioned into subnetwork to provide a effetive price signal through zonal pricing. We propose a new network partition technique using marginal cost sensitivity with a variety of load consumption.

  • In this paper, the relationship between the bandwidth (BW) and power efficiency of a source follower based (SFB) filter is quantitatively analyzed, and a design methodology for a SFB filter for optimized BW - power consumption is introduced. The proposed design methodology achieves a maximum BW at a target quality (Q) factor for the given power consumption constraint by controlling design factors individually. In order to achieve the target BW from the maximized BW, a tuning method is introduced. Through the proposed design methodology, a fourth order Butterworth filter was implemented in 0.18 ${\mu}m$ CMOS technology. The measured BW, power consumption, and IIP3 are 100 MHz, 33 ${\mu}W$, and 9 dBm, respectively. Compared with other filter structures, the measured results show high BW - power efficiency.
