  • The dynamic instability of cylindrical shell with clamped-free boundary condition subjected to constant follower force or $P_0 + P_1cos {\Omega}_t$ type pulsating follower force is analyzed. The motion of shell is modeled using the shell theory considering rotary inertia and shear deformation, and analyzed with finite element method. In case of constant follower force, the changes of eigenvalues dependent on the magnitude of applied load are investigated and the critical loads are obtained. In case pulsating follower force, instability regions of exicitation frequency are obtained by modal transform with right and left modal matrix and by multiple scales method. The effects of thickness ratio and aspect ratio on the instability of shell are studied.

  • A simple beam subjected to a uniformly distributed tangential follower force and the successive two moving spring-mass systems upon it constitute this vibration system. The influences of the velocities of the moving spring-mass system, the distance between the successive two moving spring-mass systems and the uniformly distributed tangential follower force have been studied on the dynamic behavior of a simple beam by numerical method. The uniformly distributed tangential follower force is considered within its critical value of a simple beam without the successive two moving spring-mass systems, and three kinds of constant velocities and constant distance of the successive two moving spring-mass systems are also chosen. Their coupling effects on the transverse vibration of the simple beam are inspected too.

  • A conveying fluid cantilever pipe subjected to a uniformly distributed tangential follower force and three moving masses upon it constitute this vibrational system. The influences of the velocities of moving masses, the distance between two moving masses, and the uniformly distributed tangential follower force have been studied on the dynamic behavior of a cantilever pipe system by numerical method. The uniformly distributed tangential follower force is considered within its critical value of a cantilever pipe without moving masses, and three constant velocities and three constant distances between two moving masses are also chosen. When the moving masses exist on pipe, as the velocity of the moving mass and the distributed tangential follower force Increases. the deflection of cantilever pipe conveying fluid is decreased, respectively Increasing of the velocity of fluid flow makes the amplitude of a cantilever pipe conveying fluid decrease. After the moving mass passed upon the pipe, the tip- displacement of a pipe is influenced by the coupling effect between interval and velocity of moving mass and the potential energy change of a cantilever pipe. Increasing of the moving mass make the frequency of the cantilever pipe conveying fluid decrease.

  • In this study, the dynamic instabilities of a nonlinear elastic system subjected to follower forces are investigated. The two-degree-of-freedom double pendulum model with nonlinear geometry, cubic spring, and linear viscous damping is used for the study. The constant, the initial impact forces acting at the end of the model are considered. The chaotic nature of the system is identified using the standard methods, such as time histories, power density spectrum, and Poincare maps. The responses are chaotic and unpredictable due to the sensitivity to initial conditions. The sensitivities to parameters, such as geometric initial imperfections, magnitude of follower force, direction control constant, and viscous damping, etc., are analysed. Dynamic buckling loads are computed for various parameters, where the loads are changed drastically for the small change of parameters.

Their coupling effects on the transverse vibration of the simply supported beam are inspected too. In this study the simply supported beam is deflected with small vibration proportional to natural frequency of the moving spring-mass systems. According to the increasing of initial displacement of the moving spring-mass systems the amplitude of the small vibration of the simply supported beam is increased due to the spring force. The velocity of the moving spring-mass system more affect on the transverse deflection of simply supported beam than other factors of the system and the effect is dominant at high velocity of the moving spring-mass systems.

  • In this study, dynamic stability of discontinuous free Timoshenko beam, barring a concentrated mass, under constant follower force is considered. Governing differential equations are derived based on the extended Hamilton's principle and finite element method is applied for numerical analysis. Conclusions of the study are as follows : (1) Without force direction control, (i) the critical follower force at instability is increased with concentrated mass regardless of discontinuity. (ii) the minimum critical follower force is located in the vicinity of discontinuity position .xi.$_{d}$=0.75. (iii) at mass location .mu. .leq.0.5 the force at instability is decreased as magnitude of concentrated mass is increased but, at .mu. .geq. 0.5 the force is increased as the mass is increased. (2) With force direction control, (i) shear deformation parameter S contributes insignificantly to the force at instability when S>10$^{[-993]}$ (ii) maximum critical follower force can be obtained for the discontinuity location .xi.$_{d}$=0.25. (iii) the critical follower force is increased as magnitude of concentrated mass .alpha. is increased at mass location .mu. .geq.0.4, but is increased, .mu ..leq.0.4.4.

The two-degree-of-freedom double pendulum model with nonlinear geometry, cubic spring, and linear viscous damping is used for the study. The constant and periodic follower forces are considered. The chaotic nature of the system is identified using the standard methods, such as time histories, phase portraits, and Poincare maps, etc.. The responses are chaotic and unpredictable due to the sensitivity to initial conditions. The sensitivities to parameters, such as geometric initial imperfections, magnitude of follower force, and viscous damping, etc. is analysed. The strange attractors in Poincare map have the self-similar fractal geometry. • The paper deals with the flutter of a cantilevered beam subjected to a rocket thrust generated by a solid rocket motor. It is saaumed that the rocket thrust is to be a constant follower thrust, and produced by the installation of a solid rocket motor to the tip end of the cantilevered beam. The rocket motor is considered to be a rigid body having finite sizes, but not a mass point as it has been assumed so far. Governing equations are derived through the extended Hamilton's principle, and finite element method is applied to obtain the theoretical prediction for critical follower thrust. The maximum follower thrust is also calculated through the change of shear deformation parameter of the beam in the numerical simulation. The theoretical prediction for flutter or stability is verified by experiment. The experimental results show that critical follower thrust in theory agrees well with the experimental value taking account of the magnitude, rotary inertia of the rocket motor and the distance from the tip end of the beam to the center of gravity of the rocket motor.
