  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to suggest the hierarchical structure with three layers of input task, input interaction, and input device. Background: Understanding the input interaction is very helpful to design an interface design. Method: We made a model of three layered input structure based on empirical approach and applied to a gesture interaction in TV. Result: We categorized the input tasks into six elementary tasks which are select, position, orient, text, and quantify. The five interactions described in this paper could accomplish the full range of input interaction, although the criteria for classification were not consistent. We analyzed the Microsoft kinect with this structure. Conclusion: The input interactions of command, 4 way, cursor, touch, and intelligence are basic interaction structure to understanding input system. Application: It is expected the model can be used to design a new input interaction and user interface.

  • With the consistent development of the 3D application technique, visuals are available at more realistic quality and are utilized in many applications like game. In particular, interacting with 3D objects in virtual environments, 3D graphics have led to a substantial development in the augmented reality. This study proposes a 3D user interface to control objects in 3D space through virtual two-view method using only one camera. To do so, homography matrix including transformation information between arbitrary two positions of camera is calculated and 3D coordinates are reconstructed by employing the 2D hand coordinates derived from the single camera, homography matrix and projection matrix of camera. This method will result in more accurate and quick 3D information. This approach may be advantageous with respect to the reduced amount of calculation needed for using one camera rather than two and may be effective at the same time for real-time processes while it is economically efficient.

  • An interface or integration among various information system is needed to construct knowledge management infrastructure. Particularly, digital library and knowledge management system have to be implemented in the view of integration for activating interaction of organizational knowledge. So this study conducts comparative analysis between two systems in the perspective of knowledge management key factors, and then explores the ways toward an integration model. The integration model is designed for activating user interface and consistent flow of knowledge. This model is expected to contribute to increase the performance of knowledge management.

  • Recently, the scope of user interface is increasing the relative importance in software development dramatically. As a result, there are various relative technologies like as SWING, MFC, Web 2.0, and etc. However, most current software developments are progressed in separate development process with user interface part and business part respectively. This causes the problems, like as a difficulty in the integration process, an development period's delay, and a poor reusability for the constructed models. That is, the extendability and reusability of the created models is being decreased because UI modeling is not systematic and hierarchical, and the consistent integration technique between UI modeling and business modeling does not supported. To solve these problems, this paper proposes an unified and systematic UI modeling process based on UML, using the hierarchical metamodel according to the abstraction levels of development phase. We suggest an UI metamodel, which contains a hierarchy by layering the modeling elements in PIM and PSM based on maturity degree of the development. An hierarchical modeling process combined UI modeling and business modeling is built by applying the UI and business metamodel in terms of three modeling phases(concept/specification/concrete). The effectiveness of the modeling process is shown by applying the proposed process into an Internet Shopping Mall System. Through the exploratory results, the hierarchical UI metamodel and process can produce systematic and layered UI models. This can improve the quality and reusability of models.

  • As the management and preservation of the environment become an important social issue, information required to support environmental task is required. So, there is an increasing demand for environmental information and appropriate systems to manage it. The vast volume of environmental data is distributed in different knowledge domains and systems. Environmental data objects have the complex structure containing environmental quality data and attribute data. Environmental information systems must be able to address these properties. This research has aimed at constructing well-defined schema design of environmental data, and making system architecture that environmental data kept by authorities should be made available to the public user. There are 3 major components in environmental information systems architecture ; User interface, Catalog libraries, Communication Provider. Web browsers provide consistent and intuitive user interfaces on Internet. The communication provider is a collection of diverse CGI functions. The main roles of the CGIs are to build interfaces between the Web, databases. Catalog libraries is libraries of various matadata including administration matadata. Administration matadata support the environmental administration and the managerial aspects of environmental data rather than explain a database itself or its properties.

  • As humans perform many tasks using computers, HCI(Human-Computer Interaction) has received much attention these days. One objective of HCI research is to propose how to design more consistent systems. In order to evaluate the consistency of HCI devices from the user's perspective, several models such as TAG(Task Action Grammar), GOMS(Goals-Operators-Methods-Selection Rule), and GTN(General Transition Network) have been developed. TAG specifies actions to perform tasks in terms of rule schema. It has been verified that the less the number of rule schema is, the better users perform the tasks due to assumably higher consistency. This paper hypothesizes that the consistency of systems depends not only on the number of rule schema but also on the distances between rule schema. That is, the closer the rule schema are, the easier it is to acquire the whole set of rule schema. An experiment supported this hypothesis. Therefore, distances between rule schema should be considered as well as the number of rule schema when designing systems.

  • Since a hybrid firewall filters packets at a network layer along with providing gateway functionalities at an application layer, it has a better performance than an If filtering firewall. In addition, it provides both the various kinds of access control mechanisms and transparent services to users. However, the security policies of a network layer are different from those of an application layer. Thus, the user interfaces for managing a hybrid firewalls in a consistent manner are needed. In this paper, we implement a graphical user interface to provide access control mechanisms and management facilities for a hybrid firewall such as log analysis, a real-time monitor for network traffics, and the statisics on traffics. And we also propose a new rule script language for specifying access control rules. By using the script language, users can generate the various forma of access control rules which are adapted by the existing firewalls.

  • Rapid development of electronic technology has made it possible to perform various function. But this technology made it increase it's complexity. Therefore, It was important to identify usability problem in interface design. The quality of interface to promote the efficient interaction should be evaluated with regard to users' cognitive characteristics. So, in this paper, washing machine, that is one of the most useful electronic home application was studied menu structure on interface and it's operational states transition. At first, an cognitive menu structure is identified with users' conceptual similarity of the main function of washing machine. Then three washing machines was selected to compare with the cognitive menu structure. And, we were analyzed how operational state of the washing machine was transfered. As a result, we can be revealed that menu operational method based on the cognitive structure was consistent with the user's preferred operational method during the experimental tasks and the users and designers had a different knowledge of an it's function structure. These results will be useful to design the washing machine interface.

  • It is now the digital and multi-media era. The DVD market is growing constantly. So is the capacity and quality of DVD players, In our research, we focused on the younger generation, who are now the greatest consumers. The results helped signify the most distinctive and popularized DVD player designs that satisfy young people's entertainment needs. Our new design is a large step ahead of older ones. Previous designs were uniform and standard. This new design has distinctive features and is uniquely user-friendly. It is focused primarily on easy usability. The interface is simple and straight forward. The user can use the system easily before consulting a manual. It is consistent in internal and external software and hardware, allowing the user to easily adapt to the product. DVD players have become a necessity in the current multi-media/digital era. So products need to be geared towards being available to not just those who are technologically savvy, but also those who rely on basic user-intuition. Our design takes into account these conditions, based on our statistical research, allowing us to expect our product to be a competitive force in the DVD market.

  • In this paper, a home network access agent, which controls and monitors networked appliances at home using various terminals regardless of user's location, is designed and implemented. The proposed access agent integrates wire and wireless network on a home gateway (or home server) and is accessed with consistent messages using various terminals such as a web terminal, a PDA and a cellular phone. Also, in order to verify the operation and availability of the agent, a user interface for the various terminals is designed and a home network testbed which is accessed and controlled by the terminals is implemented.
