  • PURPOSE. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of the connector configuration on the fracture load in conventional and translucent zirconia of three-unit fixed dental prostheses (FDPs). MATERIALS AND METHODS. Six different three-unit FDPs were prepared (n = 6) from three types of zirconia (3Y-TZP (Katana ML®), 4Y-TZP (Katana STML®), and 5Y-TZP (Katana UTML®)) in combination with two connector configurations (4 × 2.25, 3 × 3 mm). The CoCr master models were scanned, and the FDPs were designed and fabricated using CAD-CAM. The FDPs were cemented on the metal model and then loaded with a UTM at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min until failure. Two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test were used for statistical analysis (α = .05). RESULTS. Fracture loads of 3Y-TZP (2740.6 ± 469.2 and 2718.7 ± 339.0 N for size 4 × 2.25 mm and 3 × 3 mm, respectively) were significantly higher than those of 4Y-TZP (1868.3 ± 281.6 and 1663.6 ± 372.7 N, respectively) and 5Y-TZP (1588.0 ± 255.0 and 1559.1 ± 110.0 N, respectively) (P < .05). No significant difference was found between fracture loads of 4Y-TZP and 5Y-TZP (P > .05). The connector configuration within 9 mm2 was found to have no effect on the fracture loads on all three types of zirconia (P > .05). CONCLUSION. Fracture loads of three-unit FDPs were affected by the type of zirconia. The fracture loads of conventional zirconia were higher than those of translucent zirconia. However, it was not affected by the connector configuration when the connector had a cross-sectional area of 9 mm2.

  • For multi-story structural systems, Korean steel industry has fostered development of a steel-concrete composite beam. Configuration of the composite beam is characterized by steel angle shear connectors welded to a U-shaped cold formed-steel beam. Effects of shear connector orientation and spacing were studied to evaluate current application of the angle shear connector design equation in AC495. For the study, interfacial shear resistance behavior was investigated by conducting 24 push-out tests and attuned using unreinforced push-out specimens. Interfacial shear to horizontal slip response was reported along with corresponding failure patterns. Pure shear connector strength was also evaluated by excluding concrete shear contribution, which was estimated in relation to steel beam-slab interface separation or interfacial crack width.

  • In this paper, experimental results were presented on the moment resistance of a concealed timber post base joint aimed at replacing in a modern design introduced lately the wood to wood joints used in the traditional Korean timber house - Hanok. Preliminary results showed that the original configuration of the joint offers a limited moment resistance and a low ductility and energy dissipation. In an attempt to mitigate those limitations without undergoing major changes in the connector, three new configurations were proposed and investigated. Motivated by the wish to prevent the early failure in welds, a first approach consists in directly bolting the connector's upper plate to lower the stress on the weak welds. Alternatively, another approach focused on increasing the strength of these welds by extending their length to the full width of the metal wings. Finally, a third configuration investigated the effect of those two approaches combined. In conclusion, reinforcing the welds found out to be the best option among the presented ones. As a result, this connector considered to show proper ability for use in earthquake-resistant structures with suited lateral-resistant structural elements.

  • This paper presents experimental and numerical tests on a recently developed timber column concealed base joint. This joint was designed to replace the wood-wood connection found in the post-and-beam structure of Hanok, the traditional Korean timber house. The use of metallic connectors provides an increased ductility and energy dissipation for a better performance under reversed loading, especially seismic. In this study, we investigate the performance of the joint under pseudo-static reversed cyclic moment loading through the study of its ductility and energy dissipation. We first perform experimental tests. Results show that the failure occurs in the metallic connector itself because of stress concentrations, while no brittle fracture of wood occur. Subsequent numerical simulations using a refined finite element model confirm these conclusions. Then, using a practical modification of the joint configuration with limited visual impact, we improve the ductility and energy dissipation of the joint while retaining a same level of rotational strength as the originally designed configuration. We conclude that the joint has a satisfying behavior under reversed moment loading for use in earthquake resistant timber structure in low to moderate seismicity areas like Korea.

  • Component-based development(CBD) has acquired a substantial acceptance in both academia and industry as an effective inter-organizational reuse technology. A component framework in product line engineering(PLE) which consists of related components, connectors and their semantics has a greater potential for reusability than components. In frameworks, components are glued with association, dependency and connections. Problems occur like affecting the implementation code of components when they are glued and replaced because the association and dependency relationships between COTS components which are acquired for application development do not match exactly. Especially, a connector may not only connect related components, but also mate partially-matched COTS components fit together. However, little has been studied to date about connectors that can be used practically. In this paper, we present a meta-model for connectors and show how a connector can be designed and implemented in practice. We propose five main patterns of connectors. Proposed major patterns Provide design guidelines for practical and efficient connector configuration based on component framework. And also, applying techniques and applied case studies of the major patterns show greatly increased applicability and reusability of the component without component modification.

  • In this study, an experimental study was carried out to evaluate the bond shear performance according to the shear connector between the glue-laminated timber and steel interface. Ten block shear specimens were fabricated according to the configuration of the adhesive surface of wood and steel. In addition, four test specimens were produced according to the main variable shape of the wood-concrete shear connector. As a result of the block shear test, the shear strength of the steel-wood adhesive is shown to have a shear performance greater than the wood-wood shear strength. As a result of the push-out test according to the shape of the shear connector, the shear strength increased linearly with the attachment area. The complete composite behavior between the glued-laminated timber and the steel can be secured.

  • An approach to providing computational support with an expert shell is discussed with the scope of an industrial wire harness design, especially at a manufacturing stage. Key issues include the development of an architecture that supports a frequent design change among engineers associated with different parts of the wiring design process and the development of hierarchical representations that capture the different characteristics (e.g., connectivity, configuration) of the harnesses. The abstraction of design information results in features, while the abstraction of drawing elements leads to the definition of objects. These abstractions are essential for efficient transactions among people and computer tools in a domain that involves numerous interacting constraints. In this paper the strategy for the problem decomposition, the definition of features, and the ways in which features are shared by various operations and design changes, are discussed. We conclude with a discussion of some of the issues raised by the project and the steps underway to address them.

  • This research explains a simulation method of cable crosstalk using Microwave Studio(MWS), Matlab and analyzes the crosstalk of Twisted Wire Pairs(TWP) applied to the aerospace or the military. TWP have a periodic configuration of long twisted wires along a axis. It is impossible to conduct the simulation of TWP due to the increased meshs according to the long length configuration. Transmission matrix(T-matrix) cascading method which is suitable to analyze the periodic configuration has been adopted to get the crosstalk of total cable so that the total simulation time has been decreased. In this paper, the crosstalk analysis of TWP including the connector modeled to straight sections has been performed.
