  • A major concern in Concurrent Engineering is the control and management of workload As a general rule, leveling the peak of workload in a period is difficult because concurrent processing is comprised of various processed, including overlapping, paralleling and looping and so on. Therefore workload management with resource constraints is so beneficial that effective methods to analyze design process are momentous. This paper presents a procedure to transform the IDEF3 process model into the precedence network model for more useful assessment of the process. This procedure is expected to facilitate resolving resource constrained scheduling problems more systematically in Concurrent Engineering environment.

  • The hull form design is the first step of the concurrent ship design and production. At this point of view, to provide the hull form design system is very important to build the CIM system in shipbuilding. For this, we described about the functionality and the practices of the hull form design for the initial design stage based on the CIM concept. Also, we developed the hull form design system (DWHULL) using commercial 3D-CAD system. In the conclusions, we suggested the advance of the system and the direction of further development functions.

  • In design and manufacturing airframe structures which are composed of a lot of sub-assemblies and large complex profile shapes it is difficult to reduce so called hardware variations. Accordingly cost increasing factors for manufacturing airframe parts are much more than other machine parts because of the variability of fabricated details and assemlies. To improve cost and quality, accurate assembly methods and DPD techniques are proposed in this paper which are based upon using CAD/CAM techniques, the concept of KC's and the coordinated datum and index throughout the design, tooling, manufacturing and inspection. The proposed methods are applied to produce fuselage frame assemblies and related engineering aspects are described regarding the design of parts and tools in the context of concurrent digital definition. First articles and consequent mass production of frame assemblies shows a great improvement of the process capability ratio from 0.7 by the past processes to 1.0 by the proposed methods in addition to the cost reduction due to the less number of tools, reduced total assembly times and the space compaction needed by massive inventory. The need to achieve better Cpk, however, and future studies to be investigated will be addressed briefly.

  • In the Korean manufacturing industries, it becomes a common practice to carry both design activities and production planning activities concurrently. We should help product design engineers to apply environmental techniques in the design phase. General design engineers are busy enough to provide new technical features and to reduce the product cost. Professionals in the clean technology field should assist the product design engineers by providing the data basis of environmental specifications and appropriate solutions for each product group. This data basis should be easily accessible through internet or other forms appropriate for the personnel computers.

  • An information sharing system, namely World Design View, is developed for browsing product design data on the World Wide Web environment. For the last few years information sharing has been rapidly emerging as an important research issue in the areas of concurrent engineering, product data management, virtual manufacturing, and so on. Since we are mainly concerned with product development, the key information that needs be communicated and shared is product data. The developed system puts the major advantages of STEP, OODB, and VRML together. The STEP standard provides a consistent data exchange format and application interfaces among different CAD/CAM systems. OODB is efficient and effective in dealing with complex data structures often found in engineering applications. Virtual worlds for 3-D product models can be created by VRML which is networked via the global Internet and hyperlinked with WWW. The World Design View system can support for members of virtual design teams, possibly distributed all over the world, to share 3-D shape information quickly and easily.

  • Data sharing is a major challenge to implement CALS. STEP is the international standard for the product model data exchange among heterogeneous systems and plays a key role in CALS. Advances in computer networks are rapidly changing the product development processes. The network oriented modeling system premises to integrate design activities across the enterprise. To achieve goals of CALS 3-dimensional concurrent modeling that complies international standard is required since integrity and common perception of product data can be assured. This paper presents 3-dimensional concurrent geometric modeling on high speed network using STEP and methodologies.

  • In this paper, we present an approach to control the locomotion of snake robot with concurrent programming model constructed using threads and semaphores. The multi-thread based concurrent programming model adds the flexibility to design and synchronize the movement of snake robots as compared with microcontroller and mechanical based approaches. We have designed a physical snake robot using LEGO sensors and actuator blocks and the wave motion of the snake robot is generated by multi-thread based concurrent programming under RT-Linux. The different robot movements in a desired direction along with different types of snake movements are achieved using angle sensors.

  • In this paper, a shared-concurrent file system (S-CFS) is designed and implemented using conventional disks as disk arrays on a Workstation Cluster which can be used as a small-scale server. Since it is implemented on UNIX operating systems, S_CFS is not only portable and flexible but also efficient in resource usage because it does not require additional I/O nodes. The result of the research shows that on small-scale systems with enough disks, the performance of the concurrent file system on transaction processing applications is bounded by the bottleneck of CPUs computing powers while the performance of the concurrent file system on massive data I/Os is bounded by the time required to copy data between buffers. The concurrent file system, which has been implemented on a Workstation Cluster with 8 disks, shows a throughput of 388 tps in case of transaction processing applications and can provide the bandwidth of 15.8 Mbytes/sec in case of massive data processing applications. Moreover, the concurrent file system has been dsigned to enhance the throughput of applications requirring high performance I/O by controlling the paralleism of the concurrent file system on user's side.

  • Under the concept of global economy, the enterprises are assigning design and production environments around the world in different areas. In shipbuilding companies, a serious problem of information exchange emerges as companies use traditional hardware and very distinct softwares appropriate to their field of expertise. To overcome the decreased productivity due to the interruption of information, the concept of simultaneous engineering and concurrent design becomes very significant. In this article, the concept oj collaborative design based on internet environments is described. Especially, the core technologies to achieve collaborative design environments among shipbuilding companies, ship owners, ship classification societies, model basin, and consulting companies are adopted.
