  • The coexistence of craniofacial cleft and bilateral choanal atresia has only been reported in three cases in the literature, and only one of those cases involved a Tessier number 3 facial cleft. It is also rare for bilateral choanal atresia to be found in adulthood, with 10 previous cases reported in the literature. This report presents the case of a 19-year-old woman with a Tessier number 3 facial cleft who was diagnosed with bilateral choanal atresia in adulthood. At first, the diagnosis of bilateral choanal atresia was missed and septoplasty was performed. After septoplasty, the patient's symptoms did not improve, and an endoscopic examination revealed previously unnoticed bilateral choanal atresia. Computed tomography showed left membranous atresia and right bony atresia. The patient underwent an operation for opening and widening of the left choana with an image-guided navigation system (IGNS), which enabled accurate localization of the lesion while ensuring patient safety. Postoperatively, the patient became able to engage in nasal breathing and reported that it was easier for her to breathe, and there were no signs of restenosis at a 26-month follow-up. The patient was successfully treated with an IGNS.

  • In this study, we suggest a fast image reconstruction scheme using Poisson equation from image gradient domain. In this approach, using the Poisson equation, a guided vector field is created by employing source and target images within a selected region at the first step. Next, the guided vector is used in generating the result image. We analyze the problem of reconstructing a two-dimensional function that approximates a set of desired gradients and a data term. The joined data and gradients are able to work like modifying the image gradients while staying close to the original image. Starting with this formulation, we have a screened Poisson equation known in physics. This equation leads to an efficient solution to the problem in FFT domain. It represents the spatial filters that solve the two-dimensional screened Poisson model and shows gradient scaling to be a well-defined sharpen filter that generalizes Laplace sharpening. We demonstrate the results using a discrete cosine transformation based this Poisson model.

  • Since surgical treatment of the spine should overcome neurological compromises, the operative procedures need to be carefully planned and carried out with high degree of precision. Percutaneous vertebroplasty is a surgical procedure that was introduced for the treatment of compression fracture of the vertebrae. This procedure includes puncturing vertebrae and filling with polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). Recent studies have shown that the procedure could provide structural reinforcement for the osteoporotic vertebrae while being minimally invasive and safe with immediate relief of pain. However, failures of treatment due to excessive PMMA volume injection have been reported as one of complications in vertebroplasty. It is believed that the control of PMMA volume is one of the most critical factors that can reduce the incidence of complications. Therefore, clinical success of vertebroplasty can be dependent on the volume of PMMA injection for a given patient. In this study, the optimal volume of PMMA injection for vertebroplasty was predicted based on the image analysis of a given patient.

  • Nowadays computer-guided "flapless" surgery for implant placement using templates is gaining popularity among clinicians and patients. The advantages of this surgical protocol are its minimally invasive nature, accuracy of implant placement, predictability, less post-surgical discomfort and reduced time required for definitive rehabilitation. Aim of this study is to describe the digital implant protocol, thanks to which is now possible to do a mini-invasive static guided implant surgery. This is possible thanks to a procedure named surface mapping based on the matching between numerous points on the surface of patient's dental casts and the corresponding anatomical surface points in the CBCT data. With some critical points and needing an adequate learning curve, this protocol allows to select the ideal implant position in depth, inclination and mesio-distal distance between natural teeth and or other implants enabling a very safe and predictable rehabilitation compared with conventional surgery. It represents a good tool for the best compromise between anatomy, function and aesthetic, able to guarantee better results in all clinical situations.

  • Our study illustrates how the use of web materials written with Mathview affects vocational high school students' learning in terms of formative evaluation. Our first attempt to develop high school math with Mathview has been guided according to current math texts due to highly structured format of math contents and low learning competencies of vocational high school students. The 6 female students who participated for about 12 hours in this study revealed their responses through interview data. descriptive surveys and field notes. Contrary to the original expectation. the results of data analysis showed that the students seem to prefer using conventional learning methods even though they were motivated by powerful graphical display of Mathview and algebraic manipulation capability. The overall responses of those.

  • This paper presents an efficient interactive framework for perspective scene completion and editing tasks, which are available largely in the real world but rarely studied in the field of image completion. Considering that it is quite hard to extract perspective information from a single image, this work starts from a friendly and portable interactive platform to obtain the basic perspective data. Then, in order to make this interface less sensitive, easier and more flexible, a perspective-rectification based correction mechanism is proposed to iteratively update the locations of the initial points selected by users. At last, a complanate mesh is generated by the geometry calculations from these corrected initial positions. This mesh must approximate the perspective direction and the structure topology as much as possible so that the filling process can be conducted under the constraint of the perspective effects of the original image. Our experiments show the results with good qualities and performances, and also demonstrate the validity of our approaches by various perspective scenes and images.

  • We present a fast algorithm for Korean text extraction and segmentation from subway signboards using smart phone sensors in order to minimize computational time and memory usage. The algorithm can be used as preprocessing steps for optical character recognition (OCR): binarization, text location, and segmentation. An image of a signboard captured by smart phone camera while holding smart phone by an arbitrary angle is rotated by the detected angle, as if the image was taken by holding a smart phone horizontally. Binarization is only performed once on the subset of connected components instead of the whole image area, resulting in a large reduction in computational time. Text location is guided by user's marker-line placed over the region of interest in binarized image via smart phone touch screen. Then, text segmentation utilizes the data of connected components received in the binarization step, and cuts the string into individual images for designated characters. The resulting data could be used as OCR input, hence solving the most difficult part of OCR on text area included in natural scene images. The experimental results showed that the binarization algorithm of our method is 3.5 and 3.7 times faster than Niblack and Sauvola adaptive-thresholding algorithms, respectively. In addition, our method achieved better quality than other methods.

  • The model in our approach assumes that computer responses are a realization of a Gaussian processes superimposed on a regression model called a Gaussian process regression model (GPRM). Selecting a subset of variables or building a good reduced model in classical regression is an important process to identify variables influential to responses and for further analysis such as prediction or classification. One reason to select some variables in the prediction aspect is to prevent the over-fitting or under-fitting to data. The same reasoning and approach can be applicable to GPRM. However, only a few works on the variable selection in GPRM were done. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm to build a good prediction model among some GPRMs. It is a post-work of the algorithm that includes the Welch method suggested by previous researchers. The proposed algorithms select some non-zero regression coefficients (${\beta}^{\prime}s$) using forward and backward methods along with the Lasso guided approach. During this process, the fixed were covariance parameters (${\theta}^{\prime}s$) that were pre-selected by the Welch algorithm. We illustrated the superiority of our proposed models over the Welch method and non-selection models using four test functions and one real data example. Future extensions are also discussed.

  • An autonomous unmanned underwater vehicle is a type of marine self-propelled robot that executes some specific mission and returns to base on completion of the task. In order to successfully execute the requested operations, the vehicle must be guided by an effective navigation algorithm that enables it to avoid obstacles and follow the best path. Architectures and principles for intelligent dynamic systems are being developed, not only in the underwater arena but also in related areas where the work does not fully justify the name. The problem of increasing the capacity of systems management is highly relevant based on the development of new methods for dynamic analysis, pattern recognition, artificial intelligence, and adaptation. Among the large variety of navigation methods that presently exist, the dynamic window approach is worth noting. It was originally presented by Fox et al. and has been implemented in indoor office robots. In this paper, the dynamic window approach is applied to the marine world by developing and extending it to manipulate vehicles in 3D marine environments. This algorithm is provided to enable efficient avoidance of obstacles and attainment of targets. Experiments conducted using the algorithm in MATLAB indicate that it is an effective obstacle avoidance approach for marine vehicles.
