This paper presents the development of a knowledge-based control system operating via the Internet. With the synergy provided by the Internet, the central expert controller with its knowledge-base has the potential to serve a multitude of front-end clients located anywhere in the world provided they have Internet access. In this way, the operational span of the knowledge-based control system can be expanded to virtually anyplace within the reach of the Internet. This configuration has positive implications in improving the efficiency of distributed operations, thereby enabling plantwide optimization and costs savings. Datasocket technology is adopted to facilitate a more efficient data exchange between the knowledge-based central server and the front-end clients. A specific application in the remote monitoring and fault diagnosis of machines using the proposed control configuration is presented in the paper.
We propose a finger detection algorithm for computer mouse control to control the most commonly actions of a computer mouse(left, right and double click, scroll up and down then we add open and close, minimize and maximize a window, control the mouse.) We use a built-in web camera to control the mouse tasks. We detected, segment, then recognize the hand in our previous papers [1, 2]. The user will be able to interact with the computer with the number of fingers detected.
Both combinatorial and parametric optimization are used in computer-aided design(CAD). The most commonly occuring parametric optimization problems in engineering design such as design of control systems, design of electric circuits are usually expressed either as differentiable or as nondifferentiable semi-infinite programming(SIP) problems. In this paper we express algorithms for a class of computer-aided design problems arising in control systems.
In this paper, we present a framework that is easy to develop, modify, maintain and extend a control and monitoring software for any kinds of instruments. The presented framework is composed of three XML documents (IID, MAP, and CMIML) and two tools (Virtual Instrument Wizard, Generator). Interface information about behaviors and states of instruments is written on IID. Mapping information between the interface information in IID and API of a real instrument driver is written on MAP. Finally information about control and monitoring software is written on CMIML. IID, MAP and CMIML are written with XML format to provide common usage and platform independence of the suggested framework. VI Wizard generates CMIML (platform independent intermediate document) using IID and existing CMIML, and Generator generates source code of a control and monitoring software (platform dependent code) automatically using CMIML and MAP. The suggested framework that automatically generates control and monitoring software based on GUI provides easy development and maintenance. Also, reusability can be increased by reusing platform independent software description documents.
It is known that HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) infection, which causes AIDS after some latent period, is a dynamic process that can be modeled mathematically. Effects of available anti-viral drugs, which prevent HIV from infecting healthy cells, can also be included in the model. In this paper we illustrate control theory can be applied to a model of HIV infection. In particular, the drug dose is regarded as control input and the goal is to excite an immune response so that the symptom of infected patient should not be developed into AIDS. Finite horizon optimal control is employed to obtain the optimal schedule of drug dose since the model is highly nonlinear and we want maximum performance for enhancing the immune response. From the simulation studies, we find that gradual reduction of drug dose is important for the optimality. We also demonstrate the obtained open-loop optimal control is vulnerable to parameter variation of the model and measurement noise. To overcome this difficulty, we finally present nonlinear receding horizon control to incorporate feedback in the drug treatment.
This paper deals with the design and evaluation of the robust controller for a synchronous generator excitation system to improve the steady state and transient stability. The nonlinear characteristics of the system is treated as model uncertainties, and then the robust control techniques are introduced into the power system stability design to take into account these uncertainties at the controller design stage. The performance of the designed controller is examined by extensive non-linear time domain simulation. It is shown that the performance of the robust controller is superior to that of the conventional PI controller. This paper also proposes an improved digital exciter control system for a synchronized generator using a digitally designed controller with database. Results show that the proposed control system manifests excellent control performance compared to existing control systems. It has also been confirmed that it is easy for the proposed control system to implement digital control.
The White Beamline of the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory(PAL) consists of main and second slits, a microprobe system, two ion chambers, a video-microscope, and a Si(Li) detector. These machine components must be controlled remotely through computer system to make user experiments precise and speedy. A real-time computer control system was developed to control and monitor these machine components. A VNIEbus computer with OS-9 real-time operating system was used for low-level data acquisition and control. VME I/O modules were used for step motor control and scaler control. The software has modular structure for maximum performance and easy maintenance. We developed database, I/O driver, and control software. We used PC/Window95 for data logging and operator interface. Visual C++ was used graphical user interface programming. RS232C was used for communication between VME and PC.

Access control in dynamic environments needs the ability to provide more access opportunities of information to users, while also ensuring protection information from malicious users. Trust and risk are essential factors and can be combined together in access control decision-making to meet the above requirement. In this paper, we propose the combination of the trust and risk in access control to balance information accessibility and protection. Access control decision is made on the basis of trustworthiness of users and risk value of permissions. We use potential relations between users and relations between permissions in access control. Our approach not only provides more access opportunities for trustworthy users in accessing permissions, but also enforces traditional access control constraints such as Chinese Wall policy and Separation of Duty (SoD) of Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) model in an effective way.

In this paper, a new nonlinear programming approach is suggested to solve biaffine matrix inequality (BMI) problems in multiobjective and structured controls. It is shown that these BMI problems are reduced to nonlinear minimization problems. An algorithm that is easily implemented with existing convex optimization codes is presented for the nonlinear minimization problem. The efficiency of the proposed algorithm is illustrated by numerical examples.

This paper deals with the control algorithm of series voltage compensator that is used to maintain the load voltage when the supply voltage deviates from its nominal voltage. The two reference frame-based controllers using the state feedback algorithm are proposed and verified in the simulation and the experiment The simulation and the experiment show the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm.
