Information Processing in Primate Retinal Ganglion

  • Most of the current computer vision theories are based on hypotheses that are difficult to apply to the real world, and they simply imitate a coarse form of the human visual system. As a result, they have not been showing satisfying results. In the human visual system, there is a mechanism that processes information due to memory degradation with time and limited storage space. Starting from research on the human visual system, this study analyzes a mechanism that processes input information when information is transferred from the retina to ganglion cells. In this study, a model for the characteristics of ganglion cells in the retina is proposed after considering the structure of the retina and the efficiency of storage space. The MNIST database of handwritten letters is used as data for this research, and ART2 and SOM as recognizers. The results of this study show that the proposed recognition model is not much different from the general recognition model in terms of recognition rate, but the efficiency of storage space can be improved by constructing a mechanism that processes input information.

  • Sensing is an important part of a smart home system. Vision sensors are a type of passive systems, which are not sensitive to noise. In this paper, we implement a prototype for stereo vision systems using OpenCV. It is an open source library for computer vision developed by Intel corporation. The prototype will by used for comparing performance among various stereo algorithms and for developing a stereo vision smart camera.

Vision-based recognition of a simple non-verbal intent representation by head movements (고개운동에 의한 단순 비언어 의사표현의 비전인식)

  • In this paper the intent recognition system which recognizes the human's head movements as a simple non-verbal intent representation is presented. The system recognizes five basic intent representations. i.e., strong/weak affirmation. strong/weak negation, and ambiguity by image processing of nodding or shaking movements of head. The vision system for tracking the head movements is composed of CCD camera, image processing board and personal computer. The modified template matching method which replaces the reference image with the searched target image in the previous step is used for the robust tracking of the head movements. For the improvement of the processing speed, the searching is performed in the pyramid representation of the original image. By inspecting the variance of the head movement trajectories. we can recognizes the two basic intent representations - affirmation and negation. Also, by focusing the speed of the head movements, we can see the possibility which recognizes the strength of the intent representation.

  • Autonomous navigation of mobile robot requires a ranging system for measurement of distance to environmental objects. It is obvious that the wider and the faster distance measurement gives a mobile robot more freedom in trajectory planning and control. The active omni-directional ranging system proposed in this paper is capable of obtaining the distance for all 3600 directions in real-time because of the omni-directional mirror and the structured light. Distance computation including the sensitivity analysis and the experiments on the omni-directional ranging are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed system.

  • This study presents the development of a machine vision inspection system(MVIS) purposely for car seat frames as an alternative for human inspection. The proposed MVIS is designed to meet the demands, features and specifications of car seat frame manufacturing companies in striving for increased throughput of better quality. This computer-based MVIS is designed to perform quality measures by detecting holes, nuts and welding spots on every car seat frame in real time. In this study, the NI Vision Builder software for Automatic Inspection was used as a solution in configuring the aimed quality measurements. The techniques for visual inspection are optimized through qualitative analysis and simulation of human tolerance on inspecting car seat frames. Furthermore, this study exemplifies the incorporation of the optimized vision inspection environment to the pre-inspection and post-inspection subsystems. The system built on this proposed MVIS for car seat frames has successfully found the possible detections.

  • Recently, the researches based on vision about user attention and action awareness are being pushed actively for human computer interaction. Among them, various applications of tabletop display system are developed more in accordance with touch sensing technique, co-located and collaborative work. Formerly, although supported only one user, support multi-user at present. Therefore, collaborative work and interaction of four elements (human, computer, displayed objects, physical objects) that is ultimate goal of tabletop display are realizable. Generally, tabletop display system designs according to four key aspects. 1)multi-touch interaction using bare hands. 2)implementation of collaborative work, simultaneous user interaction. 3)direct touch interaction. 4)use of physical objects as an interaction tool. In this paper, we describe a critical analysis of the state-of-the-art in advanced multi-touch sensing techniques for tabletop display system according to the four methods: vision based method, non-vision based method, top-down projection system and rear projection system. And we also discuss some problems and practical applications in the research field.

Detection of Surface Cracks in Eggshell by Machine Vision and Artificial Neural Network (기계 시각과 인공 신경망을 이용한 파란의 판별)

  • A machine vision system was built to obtain single stationary image from an egg. This system includes a CCD camera, an image processing board and a lighting system. A computer program was written to acquire, enhance and get histogram from an image. To minimize the evaluation time, the artificial neural network with the histogram of the image was used for eggshell evaluation. Various artificial neural networks with different parameters were trained and tested. The best network(64-50-1 and 128-10-1) showed an accuracy of 87.5% in evaluating eggshell. The comparison test for the elapsed processing time per an egg spent by this method(image processing and artificial neural network) and by the processing time per an egg spent by this method(image processing and artificial neural network) and by the previous method(image processing only) revealed that it was reduced to about a half(5.5s from 10.6s) in case of cracked eggs and was reduced to about one-fifth(5.5s from 21.1s) in case of normal eggs. This indicates that a fast eggshell evaluation system can be developed by using machine vision and artificial neural network.

An Efficient Camera Calibration Method for Head Pose Tracking (머리의 자세를 추적하기 위한 효율적인 카메라 보정 방법에 관한 연구)

  • The aim of this study is to develop and evaluate an efficient camera calibration method for vision-based head tracking. Tracking head movements is important in the design of an eye-controlled human/computer interface. A vision-based head tracking system was proposed to allow the user's head movements in the design of the eye-controlled human/computer interface. We proposed an efficient camera calibration method to track the 3D position and orientation of the user's head accurately. We also evaluated the performance of the proposed method. The experimental error analysis results showed that the proposed method can provide more accurate and stable pose (i.e. position and orientation) of the camera than the conventional direct linear transformation method which has been used in camera calibration. The results of this study can be applied to the tracking head movements related to the eye-controlled human/computer interface and the virtual reality technology.

  • 일반적으로 한글 인식 과정은 많은 후보들을 생성하며 이 후보들로부터 정확한 인식결과를 얻고 복잡도를 줄이기 위해서는 효과적인 한글 표현과 탐색기법이 요구된다. 이런 목적을 위하여 본 논문에서는 한글에 적합한 구조적 정보들을 4단계 계층적 형태로 표현한다. 그리고 이 정보들을 근거로 후보 문자의 생성과 탐색을 진행하며 전체적으로 최적우선탐색을 이룬다. 인식실험은 다양한 필자들을 대상으로 한글 잦기 상위 422자로 실험한 결과 평균 86% 인식률을 얻을 수 있었다.

  • 본 논문에서는 한글의 자소간 흘림의 연속 필기를 허용하는 원고 작성기의 구현을 연구하였다. 이러한 온라인 한글 필기의 응용에서는 신속한 인식속도를 갖는 인식방법이 요구되며, 인식중에도 계속적인 필기가 가능하도록 하여 사용자에게 편의를 제공할 수 있어야 한다. 본 논문에서는 이와같은 요구사항을 만족시키기 위하여 스트링 정합방법에 기반한 신속한 인식 방법을 사용한다. 또한, 글자인식과 필기데이타 수집이 병행적으로 처리되도록 구성됨으로써 원고작성시에 자유로운 필기동작이 가능하도록 하였다. 실험결과 50명이 쓴 21,076자에 대하여 88.96%의 인식률을 제공하였으며, 제안하는 구현 방법이 원고작성 응용에 적합하게 동작함을 알 수 있었다.
