  • This study intends to find usefulness of the computer assisted dental identification in mass disaster. The variety of dental characteristics was investigated through the research of dental records of 508 adults. And a computer assisted simulation program was used to evaluate the selectivity of dental identification. Findings were as follows : 1. Combinations of dental characteristics were found 155 types. The most various dental characteristic was showed on the mandibular first molar. 99.0% of subjects had dental characteristics for dental identification. 2. The posterior teeth, in comparison with anterior teeth, showed higher selectivity in dental identification which was enhanced by information on the material, type and cavity of the restoration. 3. The variety of dental characteristics was mainly found on the combinations of missing tooth with the material, type and cavity of the restoration. 4. The computer assisted dental identification program, with informa- tion about one's tooth state, made individual identification possible when there was only a part of the teeth in a corpse. 5. The computer assisted dental identification had considerably high selectivity based on the variety of dental characteristics. And it was also performed faster and preciser than the existing identification methods. Based on the results of this study, there are various combinations of the feature of the tooth itself with dental characteristics caused by a certain type of treatment on the teeth. And using the computer assisted dental identification program based on this, dental identification can be more efficient economically and more useful than any other forensic identification methods.

  • Background: Different genioplasty techniques are applied for the adjustment of chin area deformities such as chin deviation. Results: Thirty patients with simple facial asymmetry due to chin deviation underwent computer-assisted horizontal translational osseous genioplasty. In this technique, a surgical guide was used to cut a bone strip from the side where the chin should be transferred to; then, the same bone strip was used for the filling of the gap that was formed on the opposite side. Conclusion: According to the experience gained from this study, the authors believe that computer-assisted horizontal translational osseous genioplasty is a simple and reliable technique for patients with facial asymmetry due to chin deviation.

  • The purpose of this study is to discover if the use of computer technologies in computer-assisted language learning, in the aspect of vocabulary learning, is both effective and useful. The technique of using multimedia lessons, using the computer, offers a variety of language learning tasks in relation to the four basic language learning skills. Korean students have been accustomed to a cramming style of education, and they utilize rote memorization for learning vocabulary. This study consisted of surveys and experiments, using specific multimedia language learning courseware exercises on three different age groups. The study explores the issues and problems that followed, and how teachers could effectively apply or enhance their vocabulary teaching through computer-assisted multimedia which is suited for a variety of levels versus the classroom off-line vocabulary learning application which is suited to one level.

  • Computer aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology today is the standard in manufacturing industry. The application of the CAD/CAM technology, together with the emerging 3D medical images based virtual surgical planning (VSP) technology, to craniomaxillofacial reconstruction has been gaining increasing attention to reconstructive surgeons. This article illustrates the components, system and clinical management of the VSP and CAD/CAM technology including: data acquisition, virtual surgical and treatment planning, individual implant design and fabrication, and outcome assessment. It focuses primarily on the technical aspects of the VSP and CAD/CAM system to improve the predictability of the planning and outcome.

  • The central goal of the current paper is to investigate lexical transfer between Korean and English and to identify rule-governed behavior and to provide implications for development of computer-assisted translation(CAT) software for the two languages. It will be shown that Sankoff and Poplack's Free Morpheme Constraint can not account for all the range of data. A constraint is proposed that a set of case-assigners such as verbs, INFL, prepositions, and the possessive marker may not undergo lexical transfer. The translation software is also expected to be equipped with the proposed claim that English verbs are actually borrowed as nouns or as defective verbs to escape from the direct attachment of inflectional morphemes.

  • The objective of this paper is to develop computer assisted learning system for the education of cardiac disease using multimedia. Total 20 cases of disease was selected and their asculation, X-Ray, ECG, Sanography, Angiogram and RI-Study results can be shown on the computer screen. The references about cardiology, surgical process can be also shown on the screen and the computer can test and score their records for the evaluation. This system will be widely applied for the education of medicine combined wi th the communication network.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate studesnts' attitudes toward computers and science subject using CAI(Computer-Assisted Instruction) as an instructional strategy in the elementary school level of science and computer literacy course. The influence of CAI programs on learner's attitudes toward computers and science varied according to the variables of,(l)sex (2)experience by computer learning, (3)learner's attitudes toward computers and science. Eighty nine samples were divided into the two groups. One group(48 studesnts)which is in the experimental group took a science instruction using CAI programs and computer literacy course, another group which is in the control group took only a science instruction using CAI programs. Data were collected and compared the experimental group with the control group. The results indicate as follows:(l) studesnts took science instruction using the CAI programs appeared a positive attitudes toward science. (2) the science attitudes of science instruction using the CAI programs was more effective in the lower group than in the upper group. (3) computer literacy course produced the positive attitude toward computers regardless of the experience by computer learning. (4) students using CAI programs with computer literacy course were more effective than students using CAI program only. (5) science instruction using the CAI programs was not found a meaningful difference by sex.

  • "In computer-assisted learning (CAL), small group problem-solving instruction is efficient. CAL should shift the focus of school mathematics toward goals for problem solving and mathematical modeling. For the shift, the roles and responsibilities for teachers are very important in CAL" (Heid et al. 1990).

  • Computer-assisted polyp characterization (computer-aided diagnosis, CADx) facilitates optical diagnosis during colonoscopy. Several studies have demonstrated high sensitivity and specificity of CADx tools in identifying neoplastic changes in colorectal polyps. To implement CADx tools in colonoscopy, there is a need to confirm whether these tools satisfy the threshold levels that are required to introduce optical diagnosis strategies such as "diagnose-and-leave," "resect-and-discard" or "DISCARD-lite." In this article, we review the available data from prospective trials regarding the effect of multiple CADx tools and discuss whether they meet these thresholds.

  • Computer-assisted animation production tools have an important role in animation production industries. They could reduce the production cost and time, but they rarely copy artistic characteristics of an animators. In this paper, a new computer-assisted line pattern drawing system is proposed. The system automatically copies artistic characteristics of an animator and applies them to computer-generated animations. The artistic characteristics are captured from key frames drawn by an animator. The result shows that the presented approach can copy artistic characteristics from key frames well and reduce time and cost for producing artistic animations.
