  • Failure of tube bundles due to excessive flow-induced vibrations continues to affect the performance of nuclear power plant Early experimental studies concentrated on rigid structures and later investigators dealt with elastic structures because of their importance in many engineering fields. On the other hand, much less numerical work has been carried out, because of the numerical complexity associated with the problem. Conventional approaches usually decoupled the flow solution from the structural problem. The present numerical study proposes the methodology in analyzing the fluidelastic instability occurring in tube bundles by coupling the Computational fluid Dynamics (C%) with the tube equation of motions. The motion of the structures is modeled by a spring-damper-mass system that allows transnational motion in two directions (a two-degree-of-freedom system). The fluid motion and the cylinder response are solved in an iterative way, so that the interaction between the fluid and the structure can be accounted for property. The aim of the present work is to predict the fluidelstic instability of tube bundles and the associated phenomena, such as the response of the cylinder, the unsteady lift and drag on the cylinder, the vortex shedding frequency.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the performance of a linear feeder that can transport grains uniformly. In order to analyze the dynamic behaviors of a linear feeder, the displacements of the feeder are measured by several accelerometers when it is in an operating condition. After the signal data from the accelerometers are captured in the time domain, the feeder motion in the space is visualized by using graphic computer software. In addition, a dynamic model of the feeder is established for a multi-body dynamics simulation. For the dynamic simulation, RecurDyn, which is a commercial multi-body dynamic package, is used. From the experimental and the computational approaches, an optimal dynamic motion is obtained for uniform transportation of grains. Furthermore, we also consider the determination of design parameters for optimal dynamic motion such as centroid, stiffness, and damping coefficient of the feeder system.

  • One of the most versatile approaches for analyzing the dynamic behavior of structural systems is direct time integration of semi-discrete equations of motion. However responses computed by time integration are generally inexact and hence the corresponding errors would rather be studied in advance. In spite of the various error estimation formulations that exist in the literature, it is accepted practice to repeat the analyses with smaller time steps, followed by a comparison between the results. In this paper, after a review of this simple method and disregarding the round-off errors, a more efficient, reliable and yet simple method for estimating errors and enhancing the accuracy is proposed. The main objectives of this research are more realistic error estimation based on the concept of convergence, approximately controlling the reliability by comparing the actual rate of convergence with the integration method's order of accuracy, and enhancement of reliability by applying Richardson's extrapolation. Starting from the errors at specific time instants, the study is then generalized to cases in which the errors should be estimated and decreased at specific events e.g. peak responses. Numerical study illustrates the efficacy of the proposed method.

  • Catmull-Clark subdivision scheme provides a powerful method for building smooth and complex surfaces. But the number of faces in the uniformly refined meshes increases exponentially with respect to subdivision depth. Adaptive tessellation reduces the number of faces needed to yield a smooth approximation to the limit surface and, consequently, makes the rendering process more efficient. In this paper, we present a new adaptive tessellation method for general Catmull-Clark subdivision surfaces. Different from previous control mesh refinement based approaches, which generate approximate meshes that usually do not interpolate the limit surface, the new method is based on direct evaluation of the limit surface to generate an inscribed polyhedron of the limit surface. With explicit evaluation of general Catmull-Clark subdivision surfaces becoming available, the new adaptive tessellation method can precisely measure error for every point of the limit surface. Hence, it has complete control of the accuracy of the tessellation result. Cracks are avoided by using a recursive color marking process to ensure that adjacent patches or subpatches use the same limit surface points in the construction of the shared boundary. The new method performs limit surface evaluation only at points that are needed for the final rendering process. Therefore it is very fast and memory efficient. The new method is presented for the general Catmull-Clark subdivision scheme. But it can be used for any subdivision scheme that has an explicit evaluation method for its limit surface.

  • Disassembly is a fundamental process needed for component reuse and material recycling in all assembled products. Integral attachments, also known as 'snap' fits, are favored fastening means in design for assembly (DFA) methodologies, but not necessarily a favored choice for design for disassembly. In this paper, design methods of a new class of integral attachments are proposed, where the snapped joints can be disengaged by the application of localized heat sources. The design problem of reversible integral attachments is posed as the design of compliant mechanisms actuated with localized thermal expansion of materials. Topology optimization technique is utilized to obtain conceptual layout of snap-fit mechanisms that realizes a desired deformation of snapped features for joint release. Two design approaches are attempted and design results of each approach are presented, where the geometrical configuration extracted from optimal topologies are simplified to enhance the manufacturability for the conventional injection molding technologies. To maximize the magnitude of deformation, a design scheme has been proposed to include boundary conditions as design variables. Final designs are verified using commercial software for finite element analysis.

  • We present a sequential factorization method using singular value decomposition (SVD) for recovering both the three-dimensional shape of an object and the motion of camera from a sequence of images. We employ paraperpective projection [6] for camera model to handle significant translational motion toward the camera or across the image. The proposed mthod not only quickly gives robust and accurate results, but also provides results at each frame becauseit is a sequential method. These properties make our method practically applicable to real time applications. Considerable research has been devoted to the problem of recovering motion and shape of object from image [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8] [9]. Among many different approaches, we adopt a factorization method using SVD because of its robustness and computational efficiency. The factorization method based on batch-type computation, originally proposed by Tomasi and Kanade [1] proposed the feature trajectory information using singular value decomposition (SVD). Morita and Kanade [10] have extenened [1] to asequential type solution. However, Both methods used an orthographic projection and they cannot be applied to image sequences containing significant translational motion toward the camera or across the image. Poleman and Kanade [11] have developed a batch-type factorization method using paraperspective camera model is a sueful technique, the method cannot be employed for real-time applications because it is based on batch-type computation. This work presents a sequential factorization methodusing SVD for paraperspective projection. Initial experimental results show that the performance of our method is almost equivalent to that of [11] although it is sequential.

  • The compound 3-(2-Mercaptopyridine)phthalonitrile has been synthesized and characterized by IR, UV-vis, and X-ray single-crystal determination. The molecular geometry from X-ray determination of the title compound in the ground state has been compared using the Hartree-Fock (HF) and density functional theory (DFT) with the 6-31G(d) basis set. The calculated results show that the DFT and HF can well reproduce the structure of the title compound. The energetic behavior of the title compound in solvent media was examined using the B3LYP method with the 6-31G(d) basis set by applying the Onsager and polarizable continuum model. Using the TD-DFT and TD-HF methods, electronic absorption spectra of the title compound have been predicted and good agreement with the TD-DFT method and the experimental determination was found. The predicted nonlinear optical properties of the title compound are much greater than those of urea. Besides, molecular electrostatic potential of the title compound were investigated by theoretical calculations. The thermodynamic properties of the compound at different temperatures have been calculated and corresponding relations between the properties and temperature have also been obtained.

  • The present work proposes the thermo mechanically induced statistics of nonlinear transverse central deflection of elastically supported functionally graded (FG) plate subjected to static loadings with random system properties. The FG plate is supported on two parameters Pasternak foundation with Winkler cubic nonlinearity. The random system properties such as material properties of FG material, external loading and foundation parameters are assumed as uncorrelated random variables. The material properties are assumed as non-uniform temperature distribution with temperature dependent (TD) material properties. The basic formulation for static is based on higher order shear deformation theory (HSDT) with von-Karman nonlinear strain kinematics through Newton-Raphson method. A second order perturbation technique (SOPT) and direct Monte Carlo simulation (MCS) are used to compute the nonlinear governing equation. The effects of load parameters, plate thickness ratios, aspect ratios, volume fraction, exponent, foundation parameters, and boundary conditions with random system properties are examined through parametric studies. The results of present approaches are compared with those results available in the literature and by employing direct Monte Carlo simulation (MCS).

  • In this paper, we present an iterative learning control (ILC) framework for tracking problems with predefined data points that are desired points at certain time instants. To design ILC systems for such problems, a new ILC scheme is proposed to produce output curves that pass close to the desired points. Unlike traditional ILC approaches, an algorithm will be developed in which the control signals are generated by solving an optimal ILC problem with respect to the desired sampling points. In another word, it is a direct approach for the multiple points tracking ILC control problem where we do not need to divide the tracking problem into two steps separately as trajectory planning and ILC controller. The strength of the proposed formulation is the methodology to obtain a control signal through learning law only considering the given data points and dynamic system, instead of following the direction of tracking a prior identified trajectory. The key advantage of the proposed approach is to significantly reduce the computational cost. Finally, simulation results will be introduced to confirm the effectiveness of proposed scheme.
