In the Smart UAV Development Program, one of the 21c Frontier R&D Program, the tiltrotor has been studied as the concept of vehicle. The tiltrortor aircraft take-off and land in rotary wing mode like conventional helicopter, and cruise in fixed wing mode like conventional propeller airplane. For the conversion of the flight mode from helicopter to airplane, the nacelle located at wing tip has to be tilted from about 90 degrees of helicopter mode to about 0 degree of airplane mode. In this study, the aerodynamic characteristics of the wing with tilted nacelle is investigated using computation fluid dynamics technique. In order to feature out aerodynamic interferences between wing and nacelle, the flow calculations are conducted for the wing and the nacelle separately and for the combined geometry of wing and nacelle, respectively. Through this computations, not only the aerodynamic data-base for the wing-nacelle is constructed but also its contribution to the configuration design of the wing-nacelle is anticipated.

We tried to analyze sound field of the interior of housing installed with an impeller using the Boundary Element Method (BEM) with the Kirchhoff-Helmholtz integral equation. In order to increase the accuracy of our analysis, reverse engineering technology, which has been developed in recent years. We measured and treated geometrical data with 3D scanning of the practical research object. After modeling by the reverse engineering, we analyzed variation of the BPF as adding vibration frequency and variation of the sound field of the interior of housing by changing the number of impeller blades. We also tried an analysis of free degree variation. Then, we proposed the analysis accuracy and noise reducing method by analysis result.
Numerical flow computations around an aeroelastic 3D square cylinder immersed in the turbulent boundary layer are shown. Present computational code can be characterized by three numerical aspects which are 1) the method of artificial compressibility is adopted for the incompressible flow computations, 2) the domain decomposition technique is used to get better grid point distributions, and 3) to achieve the conservation law both in time and space when the flow is computed a with moving and transformed grid, the time derivatives of metrics are evaluated using the time-and-space volume. To provide time-dependant inflow boundary conditions satisfying prescribed time-averaged velocity profiles, a convenient way for generating inflow turbulence is proposed. The square cylinder is modeled as a 4-lumped-mass system and it vibrates with two-degree of freedom of heaving motion. Those blocks which surround the cylinder are deformed according to the cylinder's motion. Vigorous oscillations occur as the vortex shedding frequency approaches cylinder's natural frequencies.
A Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) code with transition prediction model is developed and the computational results on an oscillating airfoil are compared with the experimental data for OA209 airfoil. An approximated eN method that can predict transition onset points and the length of transition region is directly applied to the RANS code. The hysteresis loop in dynamic stall is compared for the computational results using transition prediction and fully turbulent models with the experimental data. Results with transition prediction show more correlation with the experimental data than the fully turbulent computation.
In the aeroacoustic application of computational fluid dynamics, the physical phenomena like the crackle in the unsteady compressible jets should be based on very time-accurate numerical solution. The accuracy of the present numerical scheme is extended to the fifth order, using the WENO filter to the sixth-order central difference computation. However, the computational capacity is very restricted by the environment of computational power, so therefore the quadrilateral adaptive grids technique is introduced for this high-order accuracy scheme. The first problem is the multi-dimensional interpolation between fine and coarse grids. Some general benchmark problems are solved to show the effectiveness of this method.
Two compression ramp problems and an impinging shock problem are computed to investigate influence of turbulence models and eddy viscosity on the shock-wave / boundary layer interaction. A Navier-Stokes boundary layer generation code was applied to the generation of inflow boundary conditions. Computational results are validated well with the experimental data and effects of turbulence models are investigated. It is shown that the behavior of turbulence (eddy) viscosity directly affects both the extent of the separation and shock-wave positions over the separation.

As a "kind of" mature ship form, planing hull has been widely used in military and civilian areas. Therefore, a reasonable design for planing hull becomes more and more important. For planing hull, resistance and trim are always the most important problems we are concerned with. It affects the planing hull's economic efficiency and maneuverability very seriously. Instead of the expensive towing tank experiments, the development of computer comprehensive ability allows us to previously apply computational fluid dynamics(CFD)to the ship design. In this paper, the CFD method and Goal Driven Optimization (GDO) were used in the estimations of planing hull resistance and running attitude to provide a possible method for performance computation of planing hull.

General algorithm is developed for the prediction of internal flow-induced noise. This algorithm is based on the integral formula derived by using the General Green Function, Lighthills acoustic analogy and Curls extension of Lighthills. Novel approach of this algorithm is that the integral formula is so arranged as to predict frequency-domain acoustic signal at any location in a duct by using unsteady flow data in space and time, which can be provided by the Computational Fluid Dynamics Techniques. This semi-analytic model is applied to the prediction of internal aerodynamic noise from a throttle valve in an automotive engine. The predicted noise levels from the throttle valve are compared with actual measurements. This illustrative computation shows that the current method permits generalized predictions of flow noise generated by bluff bodies and turbulence in flow ducts.

Recently, hybrid air-conditioning system has been proposed and applied to achieve building energy saving. One example is a system combining radiation panel with natural wind-induced cross-ventilation. However, few research works have been conducted on the non-uniformity of thermal comfort in such hybrid air-conditioning system. In this paper, both thermal environment and non-uniform thermal comfort of human thermal model under various air-conditioning system, including hybrid system, were evaluated in a typical office room using coupled simulation of computation fluid dynamics, radiation model and a human thermal model. The non-uniformity of thermal comfort was evaluated from the deviation of surface temperature of human thermal model. Flow fields and temperature distribution in each case were represented.
