  • The uniaxial compressive strength and Young's modulus of intact rocks are the most important analytical parameters for design of rock mass structures. But the preparation of the samples for uniaxial compressive test is a hard and time consuming task. By using ultrasonic test, engineers can predict the analytical parameters that is the uniaxial compressive strength and Young's modulus. The uniaxial compressive test and ultrasonic test were carried out 115 samples of igneous rocks, 74 samples of metamorphic rocks and 55 samples of sedimentary rocks and, after regression analysis of the test results, best fit equations for predicting the uniaxial compressive strength and Young's modulus are proposed. In order to obtain a better correlations coefficient between uniaxial compressive strength and P-wave velocity, the P-wave velocity were multiplied by density values. The proposed equations for predicting uniaxial compressive strength and Young's modulus using ultrasonic test provide reliable results.

  • Test specimen test was performed using concrete reinforced with fiber sheet and the test variables were based on the kinds of fiber and the number of reinforcement layers. Using steel-concrete reinforced with fiber sheet, compression tests were performed and the test variables were the kinds of fiber, number reinforcement layers and reinforcement layer order. The following results were obtained: 1) It was demonstrated that compressive strength of the test specimen reinforced during test specimen test and member test increased as the number of reinforcement layers increased. 2) It was shown that non-reinforced test, specimen were destroyed during the member tests, but the specimen reinforced with CFS destroyed and the GFS-reinforced specimen and composite reinforced specimen showed ductile destruction. 3) As a result of tests on kinds of reinforcement fiber, it was demonstrated that CFS-reinforced test specimen had higher compressive strength in a 공시체 test. In the member test, 2ply-and 3ply-GFS reinforced specimens except lplied one had higher compressive strength. It was because partial destruction occurred due to the rate of height/section. 4) For layer strength order, compared with test specimen reinforced only with a single reinforced material, test specimen reinforced with CFS and GFS, and test specimen reinforced with CFS first showed better results in compressive strength and ductility judgement.

  • This study experimentally investigated the compressive and flexyral strength development characteristics of polymer concrete using four different type polymeric resins such as unsaturated polyester, vinyl ester, epoxy, and PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) as binders. The test results show that the average compressive strength of those four different polymer concretes was 88.70 MPa, the average flexural strength was 20.30 MPa. Those test results show that compressive and flexural strengths of polymer concrete were much stronger than compressive and flexural strengths of ordinary Portland cement concrete. In addition, the relative gains of the compressive strength development at the age of 24 hrs compared to the age of 168 hrs were 68.6~88.3 %. Also, the relative gains of the flexural strength development at the age of 24 hrs compared to the age of 168 hrs were 73.8~93.4 %. These test results show that compressive and flexural strengths of each polymer concrete tested in this study were developed at the early age. Moreover, the prediction equations of compressive and flexural strength developments regarding the age were determined. The determined prediction equations could be applied to forecast the compressive and flexural strength developments of polymer concrete investigated in this study because those prediction equations have the high coefficients of correlation. Last, the relations between the compressive strength and the flexural strength of polymer concrete were determined and the flexural/compressive strength ratios were from 1/4 to 1/5. These results show that polymer concretes investigated in this study were appropriate as a flexural member of a concrete structure because the flexural/compressive strength ratios of polymer concrete were much higher than the flexural/compressive strength ratios of Portland cement concrete.

  • The existing techniques used to estimate and manage the compressive strength of concrete do not include the environmental factors that influence the development of compressive strength and the compressive strength itself. Thus, it is necessary to develop a reasonable yet simple way to measure the compressive strength of concrete structures at construction sites by considering concrete's mechanical properties and curing environment. This study was conducted to propose an acrylic form and a junction isolation mold with crack-inducing boards that uses non-destructive methods to create and collect concrete test samples that are cured in the same condition as the actual concrete structures. junction isolation molds were used in high-strength and super high-strength concrete to evaluate the reliability of compressive strength evaluation on the test sample. The following were the findings of this study:

  • In this study, the creep behaviors of amorphous steel fiber-reinforced concrete were investigated. Two different types of tests were carried out to evaluate the effect of amorphous steel fibers on the creep of concrete: compressive creep test and tensile creep test. Fiber volume fractions used in the test were 0.2% and 0.4% for tensile specimens, and 0.2% and 0.3% for compressive specimens. Based on the test results, the addition of fiber volume fraction of 0.2% into concrete could significantly reduce both compressive and tensile creep.

  • The compressive strength of concrete is commonly used criterion in producing concrete. However, the tests on the compressive strength are complicated and time-consuming. More importantly, it is too late to make improvement even if the test result does not satisfy the required strength, since the test is usually performed at the 28th day after the placement of concrete at the construction site. Therefore, accurate and realistic strength estimation before the placement of concrete is being highly required. In this study, the estimation of the compressive strength of concrete was performed by probabilistic neural network (PNN) on the basis of concrete mix proportions. The estimation performance of PNN was improved by considering the correlation between input data and targeted output value. Adaptive probabilistic neural network (APNN) was proposed to automatically calculate the smoothing parameter in the conventional PNN by using the scheme of dynamic decay adjustment algorithm. The conventional PNN and APNN were applied to predict the compressive strength of concrete using actual test data of a concrete company. APNN showed better results than the conventional PNN in predicting the compressive strength of concrete.

  • Accurate estimation of the uniaxial compressive strength of rock is very crucial for the safety of construction activities occurring in the rock mass. However, the uniaxial compressive strength test is expensive and time consuming. Moreover, the uniaxial compressive strength test cannot be performed in the field. In order to solve this kind of problem, many foreign researchers investigated the use of the point load strength test for the estimation of uniaxial compressive strength of rock. However, the result of research obtained for rocks from other countries may not be directly applicable for rocks in Korea. The correlation between the point load strength index and the uniaxial compressive strength for rocks in Korea is suggested in the form of table by using the results of the extensive literature reviews and laboratory tests. The suggested result is expected to be used for the simple and quick estimation of uniaxial compressive strength of rocks in Korea.

  • Formwork is a temporary structure that supports its weight and that of fresh concrete as well as construction live loads. Slab formwork consists of sheathing, stringer, hanger and shore. In construction site, pipe supports are usually used as shores which are consisted of the slab formwork. In this study, compressive strength of 80 pipe supports was measured by knife edge test and plate test. Buckling load of pipe supports was analyzed by structural analysis program(MlDAS). Theoretical buckling load with/without initial deformation was got by theoretical analysis. According to these results, buckling load which was analyzed by structural analysis program(MlDAS) was larger than compressive strength of knife edge test and plate test. Theoretical buckling load without initial deformation was larger than compressive strength of knife edge test and plate test. But Theoretical buckling load with initial deformation was lower than compressive strength of knife edge test and plate test. Initial deformation equation for test method according to the pipe support length was suggested. Therefore, the present study results will be used to design the slab formwork safely.

  • In this paper, static compressive test and compression-compression fatigue test of carbon/epoxy composites which have different micro-structures were carried out with respect to the bias angle. In order to find out the effect of the micro-structure of the fabric composite on compressive characteristics the specimens made of UD carbon/epoxy composite comprising the same fiber and matrix system as the fabric composite were also prepared. The compressive strength and modulus were measured and these values were used to develop a semi-empirical formula for predicting compressive strength of the fabric composite with bias angles. The fatigue behavior of the fabric composite with respect to the bias angle variation was also investigated.
