An analytical solution of bending thin plates with different moduli in tension and compression

  • Materials which exhibit different elastic moduli in tension and compression are known as bimodular materials. The bimodular materials model, which is founded on the criterion of positive-negative signs of principal stress, is important for the structural analysis and design. However, due to the inherent complexity of the constitutive relation, it is difficult to obtain an analytical solution of a bimodular bending components except in particular simple problems. Based on the existent simplified model, this paper solves analytically bending thin plates with different moduli in tension and compression. By using the continuity conditions of stress components in unknown neutral layer, we determine the location of the neutral layer, and derive the governing differential equation for deflection, the flexural rigidity, and the internal forces in the thin plate. We also use a circular thin plate with bimodulus to illustrate the application of this solution derived in this paper. The results show that the introduction of different moduli has influences on the flexural stiffness of the bending thin plate.

  • This study describes the results of Coefficient of Performance(COP) analysis by cycle simulation for two types of absorption-compression hybrid cycle using the Water/Lithium Bromide solution pair. These types are basic hybrid systems introducing a mechanical compression process into the refrigerant vapor phase of the single effect absorption cycle. In absorption-compression hybrid cycles, coefficient of performance is improved compared with absorption cycle. Hybrid cycle Type 2 is considered as a key technology to support energy utilization system, given its capability of utilizing waste heat to drive system with a high level of efficiency.

  • An analytical closed-form solution for wave propagation velocity and damping in saturated porous media is presented in this paper The fully coupled field model with compressible solid Brains and pore water were used to derive this solution. An engineering approach for the analysis of fully saturated porous media was adopted and closed-form solutions for one dimensional wave propagation in a homogeneous domain were derived. The solution is highly versatile in that it considers compression of the solid grains, compression of the pore water, deformation of the porous skeleton, and spatial damping and can be used to compute wavespeeds of first and second kind and damping coefficients in various geologic materials. This solution provides a means of analyzing the influence of material property variations on wavespeed and attenuation. In Part 2 of this work the theoretical solution is incorporated into the numerical code and the code is used in a parametric study on wave propagation velocity and damping.

Deformation Property of TiC-Mo Solid Solution Single Crystal at High Temperature by Compression Test (TiC-Mo 고용체 단결정의 고온 압축변형 특성)

  • To investigate the deformation properties of TiC-(5-20) mol% Mo solid solution single crystals at high temperature by compression testing, single crystals of various compositions were grown by the radio frequency floating zone technique and were deformed by compression at temperature from 1250K to 2270K at strain rates from $5.1{\times}10^{-5}$ to $5.9{\times}10^{-3}/s$. The plastic flow property of solid solution single crystals was found to be clearly different among a three-temperature range (low, intermediate and high temperature ranges) whose boundaries were dependent on the strain rate. From the observed property, we conclude that the deformation in the low temperature range is controlled by the Peierls mechanism, in the intermediate temperature range by the dynamic strain aging and in the high temperature range by the solute atmosphere dragging mechanism. The work softening tends to become less evident with an increasing experimental temperature and with a decreasing strain rate. The temperature and strain rate dependence of the critical resolved shear stress is the strongest in the high temperature range. The curves are divided into three parts with different slopes by a transition temperature. The critical resolved shear stress (${\tau}_{0.2}$) at the high temperature range showed that Mo content dependence of ${\tau}_{0.2}$ with temperature and the dependence is very marked at lower temperature. In the higher temperature range, ${\tau}_{0.2}$ increases monotonously with an increasing Mo content.

  • In u-Healthcare environment, large amounts of important medical information is processed through wireless communication. Therefore there is a need to increase the efficiency of the network system of sending ECG data. This paper presents a compression solution for efficient ECG data transmission(ECGLZW) in u-Healthcare environment. The results showed that the average compression ratio of ECGLZW was 4.6, which got 200% better than existing methods(Huffman and LZW compression). ECGLZW's high compression ratio can increase the efficiency of wireless channels. As a result, reliable communication and security of u-Healthcare information could be achieved by applying these remaining channels to retransmission and encryption.

Comparison of Cutting and Compression Tests for the Texture Measurement of Chinese Cabbage Leaves (절단시험과 압착시험에 의한 배추잎의 조직감 측정 비교)

  • The texture measurement of Chinese cabbage leaves used for Kimchi preparation were con ducted by cutting and compression test and the results were compared to the sensory evaluation. The cutting force of cabbage leaf stalk increased by blanching or salting, and a maximum cutting force was attained by salting in 15% salt solution for 5 hours. The compression force and recovered height measured by compression test of Chinese cabbage leaf stalk decreased by blanching or salting, and the breaking point disappeared. Treatment with $CaCl_2$ solution increased the cutting force compression force and breaking strength of fresh leaves, but the effect disappeared by salting or blanching. Cutting strength could be used as a parameter indicating the hardness and chewiness of salted cabbage. Compression force and breaking strength could indicate the textural changes of blanched leaves, but were not useful for the measurement of hardness and chewiness of salted leave.

Analytical solution of stress-strain relationship of modified Cam clay in undrained shear

  • The modified Cam clay (MCC) model is used to study the response of virgin compressed clay in undrained compression. The MCC deviatoric stress-strain relationship is obtained in closed form. Elastic and plastic deviatoric strains are taken into account in the analysis. For the determination of the elastic strain components, both a variable shear modulus and constant shear modulus are considered. Constitutive relationships are applied to the well-known London and Weald clays sheared in undrained compression.

  • In this study, an analytical solution of pre-buckling, buckling, post-buckling, ultimate strength and post-ultimate strength behaviour of simply supported rectangular plates subjected to biaxial compression is derived. Parametric study with varying the aspect ratio, the slenderness ratio and the loading ratio is carried out. The present solution may be used as basical data when the verfication of the numerical and experimental result is made.

  • In the communication technology, there is necessary data compression to transfer data more quickly and bigger amount in the same condition. And that should bring down the cost consequently. This paper shows that how to apply compression software and hardware to attain the issue that mentioned previous in data communication technology as well as, trying to find the solution for the system delay problem and to improve efficiency demanded to them. To achieve these purposes, 1 will study and analyze the efficiency of compression system to realize realtime data compression transfer system using LZS compression algorithm.

Energy Efficient and Low-Cost Server Architecture for Hadoop Storage Appliance

  • This paper proposes the Lempel-Ziv 4(LZ4) compression accelerator optimized for scale-out servers in data centers. In order to reduce CPU loads caused by compression, we propose an accelerator solution and implement the accelerator on an Field Programmable Gate Array(FPGA) as heterogeneous computing. The LZ4 compression hardware accelerator is a fully pipelined architecture and applies 16 dictionaries to enhance the parallelism for high throughput compressor. Our hardware accelerator is based on the 20-stage pipeline and dictionary architecture, highly customized to LZ4 compression algorithm and parallel hardware implementation. Proposing dictionary architecture allows achieving high throughput by comparing input sequences in multiple dictionaries simultaneously compared to a single dictionary. The experimental results provide the high throughput with intensively optimized in the FPGA. Additionally, we compare our implementation to CPU implementation results of LZ4 to provide insights on FPGA-based data centers. The proposed accelerator achieves the compression throughput of 639MB/s with fine parallelism to be deployed into scale-out servers. This approach enables the low power Intel Atom processor to realize the Hadoop storage along with the compression accelerator.
